The magesterium needs to come clean on this like a 7-year-old in confession. I did a,b,c and I am sorry.

Fr. Trigilio says he loves first confessions because there is no excuse making and qualifying just the list of sins and an expression of remorse.

Bishops trying to cover it up look just like politicians to the public and they do not win us any conversions with their pathetic behavior past or present.

The only way to get beyond this is to hold the guilty responsible and not try to bury anything under the carpet.

It’s this kind of obfuscation that got them into such trouble, to begin with. Some of them still don’t “get it” and are apparently determined not to. Honesty, transparency, and LOTS of penance are needed.
Note that the cardinal is the retired, former archbishop.

Maybe, like children, retired former prelates should be seen and not heard.

I agree wholeheartedly.

Sometimes I wonder about the unity and determination of bishops to engage seriously with the ongoing crisis in the Catholic Church in my country, especially when I see little evidence that they are attempting to come to terms with the profound suffering of victims - albeit with a few exceptions.

As one priest put it in a letter to an Irish newspaper: ‘how many bishops have genuinely encountered - one to one - victims of predatory priests? How many bishops have read - and keep up to date with - studies, books and other scholarly works which address the devastating spiritual consequences of clerical sexual abuse for victims?’

I find it tragic that Government inquiries, Courts and other such bodies are needed to investigate the Church on matters of clerical sexual abuse in my country.Like the priest quoted above I have become cynical about ‘meaningless episcopal sound-bites, feigned “compassion” and PR exercises’. The evils perpetrated on the victims of clerical sexual abuse will continue to wound and damage our Church until they are faced in a true spirit of humble contrition, heartfelt repentance and desire for real reform.

Yes, unfortunately this latest ‘turn’ is causing quite a stir here in Ireland. To be honest, I don’t really know what to make of it really… On the surface it seems that Cardinal Connell is involved in a cover-up of abuse cases, but we can’t really be sure. The media are, as always, stirring up the notion that the current archbishop of Dublin, Dr Diarmuid Martin, and the former archbishop are ‘at war’ with each other - although there was, at some stage in the last few months, a grave break-down in communications between the two.

The thing is that people don’t trust Cardinal Connell since the abuse controversies erupted a number of years ago. Dr Martin has been a breath of fresh air to the archdiocese because of his policy of openness, and one gets the sense that he is actually listening to people. Because of the mistrust towards the Cardinal, it is difficult for people to consider that he is doing anything other than covering up more scandals. According to todays edition of the Irish Catholic newspaper, the Cardinal is concerned about principles rather than covering up files - and that is possibly the other side of the coin. There are victims who came to (then) Archbishop Connell on the basis that he treated their cases in strict confidentiality- they simply wanted the archbishop to know what had happened to them, rather than going through numerous enquiries. We have to remember that this is also a possibility, although it would be better, if that is the case, for the Cardinal to let us know. I want the full truth as much as anyone, but I think we mustn’t rush to judge the Cardinal until we are sure of the full story.
