At the moment, and I live in Ireland, it does seem like the government have an agenda to remove any prevailing authority that the Church still has here. Yes, the flow of reports have been horrendous, and there are many different sectors responsible - though the Vatican is not one of the guiltier sources.
As I see it, since this new government have come in, they have tried to please the people on a number of issues - and since there is a growing voice of Catholic dissidents (the Association of Irish Priests for example), liberal Catholics, lapsed Catholics, etc., they are as I see it, trying to gain popularity as well as crush the Church here.
One of the first moves made by our new Education Minister was to begin a process of removing the Catholic patronage from schools here.
So following Mr. Kenny’s speech, it does seem like they are not going to let this drop until the Church - which they view as a hierarchical institution and not the body of believers making up the Mystical Body of Christ - has been run out of Ireland. Apologies and compensation from the Church will clearly never be enough. Even our main irish Catholic newspaper has a largely liberal agenda, and welcomed Mr. Kenny’s attack.
However, the core faithful still remain, and we will continue to pray silently for the Church in Ireland, for healing of the victims, for a clear direction through this mess and for a renewal of the faith here. What else can we do?
