Irish priest abducted in the Philippines

If I remember correctly, it was the Abu Sayaff who kidnapped and murdered an Italian priest several years ago.:crossrc:

Also, two aid workers for the Irish charity GOAL, Sharon Cummins from Dublin and Hilda Kawuki from Uganda: today marks their 100th day in captivity. The two women were kidnapped by an armed gang which forced its way into a GOAL compound in northern Darfur at the beginning of July.

My wife is from that area & was a Columban missionary for 4 yrs, so this hits us close to home & will have the focus of our prayers…
 
Further update: kidnappers are now demanding $2 million.

More reasons to pray without ceasing. In this year of the Priest, Blessed Mother intercede in securing the safety of this missionary who is serving to build the kingdom of heaven on earth. We ask all these prayers, through Christ, our Lord. Amen.

i’m wondering why the US and UN don’t send troops to the Southern Philippines and just wipe the bandits out? they’re a small group and there’s only so many islands there

i know there are US troops there for “troop exercises” but i wish the government should admit publicly that they are incapable of beating these extrimists and just acknowledge the help being offered by the US. the choice is clear, soverignity (no US troops) vs peace (would require US troops). ask any citizen and i’m sure they’ll choose peace.

Thank God the priest was okay. but things like this should not happen in the first place if we just let the better equipped and better trained US military to do their job and get rid of the terrorists

Not quite as simple as it sounds… there are over 7100 islands in the Philippines. The Mindanao area is predominantly Muslim, especially the farther south one goes. These insurgents have lots of places to hide out & easily blend in with their friends & relatives. Like you said, special forces are there, but their official capacity is ‘advisery’. The reality is they are doing more than we think, dealing w/ a very complex issue. There are reasons the Spaniards failed to subdue this region.
