Irish Priest Blasts Self-Righteous "Holier-than-Thous" on Kennedy Funeral

By Hilary WhiteDUBLIN, October 8, 2009 (LifeSiteNews.com) - The Catholic faithful from around the world who protested against the lavish public funeral of the late, notoriously pro-abortion Senator Edward Kennedy were self-righteous “holier-than-thous” who lacked compassion write Fr. Gerard Moloney in an editorial of the October issue of Reality magazine.

Moloney, a member of the Redemptorist religious order and editor of Reality, said that when it was announced that the funeral was to be held in a Redemptorist church in Boston, the order started receiving numerous calls and emails from Catholics protesting the funeral.

The messages, said Fr. Moloney, “were not only angry - they were hate-filled; they dripped with righteous indignation.”

I suppose he’s including Archbishop Burke in the “holier than thou” contingent. Had he been present at the time, perhaps he would have faulted Jesus for intolerant speech when he loudly condemned some of the pharisees, comparing to them to a “brood of vipers”–i.e, a bunch of snakes.
 
Is LifeSiteNews writing news articles, or editorials? Those two should really be kept distinct.
 
The church funeral would have been OK with me if the representative of the Church (Cardinal or Priest) would have made a clear statement about the fact that abortion is a grave sin, support for abortion is also a grave sin, and the late Senator (hopefully) repented before his death and received the Sacraments of the Church. This is not because I’m holier than thou, but because Senator Kennedy has caused grave scandal with his public support for abortion. Had the Church addressed the issue, clearly and publicly during the funeral, errors would have been corrected and souls would have been saved. In absence of that, the representatives of the Church only made the scandal worse by appearing to agree with or at least tolerate Sen. Kennedy’s error.

As far as I can tell, the LifeSiteNews article accurately reported what Fr. Moloney wrote, as well as fair and accurate quotes from several individuals that Fr. Moloney had criticized.

Which specific parts of the LifeSiteNews article do you consider opinionated?
 
Something has gone terribly wrong with the publishing arm of the Redemptorist congregation.
Once again politics takes precedence over Catholic doctrine, and Reality magazine’s editorial on the Kennedy funeral is no exception. I do not understand Fr. Moloney’s criticism.

Why is anyone, politician or otherwise, entitled to a lavish, public Catholic funeral? What is so cruel and horrible about a private Catholic Mass? Sen. Kennedy’s family and friends could have had all the hoopla and political posturing at a secular event outside of a Catholic liturgy.

Before Fr. Moloney accuses others of self-righteousness, perhaps he should take a long look in the mirror.

The tone. Its blatantly clear that LifeSiteNews isn’t just reporting on the issue by quoting Father Moloney and his critics, but their very phrasing is clearly taking sides. Senator Kennedy is “notorious”, the people who protested his funeral are “the Catholic faithful” (and a priest is not), the article itself dubs the funeral “over the top” (when it could very easily have attributed it to the funeral’s critics), the article itself calls it the “Kennedy Funeral Scandal”, the article barely gives more than a quote to Father Moloney’s positions and goes for paragraphs on end citing critics of the funeral who said nothing about Father Moloney at all…
 
Recently I watched on Youtube at McGill University in Montreal, a speaker was about to address some students about abortion. As soon as he started Pro choice activists started to scream, sing children’s songs and totally disrupt the proceedings. The security guards were pathetic in their duty and shows how bigoted anyone who supports abortion for any reason is.

I will never be ashamed of publicly saying that I am Pro-Life and will not let anyone diminish the holocaust that is currently going on in our countries with abortion.
