The group that represents Ireland’s Catholic priests says the secrecy of confession must be protected, following government indications that confessions would not be exempt from rules on mandatory reporting of child abuse in the wake of the Cloyne abuse report, the Catholic News Service reports.

Sometimes I wonder how we got ourselves in such a mess. given up of priests who abuses children to a secular government was a big mistake. that just gives the government power over the Church.

The CC has everything to deal with these priests and they have giving this right up to a secular world. what can we expect from an ungodly government when the Church gives them permission to enterfering in the Church?

?? Really? Large numbers of child abusing priests protected by Bishops in an organized and deliberate and/or misleading manner. All on a grand scale - and you wonder how we got ourselves in this mess? OK - you keep seeking that wisdom, because it’s painfully clear you need some.

Really? It seems to me to have been the best thing to happen since the Church, which clearly was given such great deference, DID NOTHING. Only when the Church and the priests and bishops were held to account did anything significant change. The hierarchy has NO ONE to blame but themselves for this situation.

YEP! and clearly it’s needed.

Maybe, but the Church acted abysmally and clearly - and rightly - has forfeited the trust and right to handle the issue they so bungled or enabled on such a scale.

We can expect them to hold the Church, priests and Bishops accountable for the damage they have done. When the Church, as in this case, acts ungodly - it needs to expect to be treated accordingly.

The Sacramental Seal of Confession is inviolate. It cannot be broken or the priest would be excommunicated. To put priests under more pressure is sad to say the least. There also has been no known case of a priest who has left the priesthood that has broken the Seal.

Our priests need all the support and prayers that we can give them. And thank them once in a while–how many actually do that?

Those who abused children should have been handed over to the authorities, just like any other pedophile. They broke the commandments, but also the law. And most of them got away with it by having no jail time. And I also think some of them were innocent of the charges. Many didn’t make charges until after the priest had passed away. May God forgive them.
