Irish prime minister who attacked Vatican, to meet the Pope

Ireland’s Prime Minister (Taoiseach) Enda Kenny, will meet Pope Benedict XVI next Saturday, September 22, together with other European political leaders of the Centrist Democrats International Group, that is the global international political group dedicated to the promotion of Christian democracy. There is some speculation in Ireland that Kenny may use the occasion to invite the Pope to visit the country.

It will be their first encounter since Kenny openly attacked the Vatican in a speech to the Dail (the Irish Parliament’s lower house) on 20 July 2011 for failing to intervene in ways that could have prevented the sexual abuse of children by priests in the Republic.

About time too. Lets hope it directs Kenny’s mind regarding up and coming discussions about legalising abortion in Ireland.

I hope this has a transformative effect on him, I know he is a Catholic but he is in a coalition Government full of people with an aggressive secular agenda, and up to now, because it is the trendy thing to do I feel and because he wants to be popular, he has gone gung-ho against the Church in Ireland. He recently refused to give his personal opinion on gay marriage and has remained very silent on his own faith in the political arena. He’s not in an easy position of course because standing up for his faith in this country would probably alienate him from a huge proportion of voters.

However, Popes are usually pretty amazing people, and Pope Benedict is no exception. Please God may this meeting be a moment of true conversion for him, may it extend beyond pleasantries and be an opportunity for Enda Kenny to revisit his own personal faith and grow in a deeper love of Christ and His Church. Amen.
