Because quite a few though not all Christians spread lies about us (and purposely target our flocks because in their minds we are non-christians), doesn’t make it any less supportable? It’s downright unchristian to do such a thing.
You call them lies, they call them truth. You call it truth, they call it lies. That’s opinoins.
That’s a opinoin, and I can’t help that you consider them non-christians, or their acts un-christian.
What stake do you have in this? You’re into Taoism and Buddhism. Why are you reproving those who don’t even believe as you do? I’m sorry, but it seems this kind of discussion would be none of your business, sorry, trying not to sound rude.
You are sounding rude, either way. It is my business cause everyone in my family is either Baptist or Methodist, and when people say that the group, and consider them in, they are saying they spread lies and consider you non-christians, sorry if I hold that as a insult.

Hi,

I no longer consider my Catholic (I am now a sort of atheist agnostic). However…

The “stealing” of Catholic “sheep” by Evangelical Christians REALLY gets to me.

I have a friend from back in high school who is a PK (pastor’s kid). He just graduated from Liberty University. Anyway, he just got back from a “medical mission” in some mountain top village in Peru.

I was flipping through some of the facebook pictures of the trip. Intially, my comments on seeing the pictures were along the lines of:

“Ooooo look at the cute llama!”

“Wow those are huge mountains.”

“Look at the incredible rainbow!”

…then I flipped to a picture with the caption “Catholic Church in [insert village’s name here]”.

I was taken aback. Although the trip was primarily a medical trip (you know, to teach people basic health care and first aide), I know that they did some “gospel preachin’”, too. Since the village had one nice big Catholic Church in the middle of town, one would suppose that the villagers were Catholic. They have probably been Catholic for generations. In fact, the village being so remote, they probably haven’t heard of much anything BUT Catholicism for several generations.

Now, into this bation of Catholic faith comes a group of super fundamentalist evangelical college students ready to convert the masses to Christianity.

I flip through more pictures. I see a huge class of small children (most of them probably younger than grade 3) all holding up plastic bags called “hygiene kits and Bibles”. I flip some more. I see more evidence of missionary activity.

I am now kinda pissed. I posted half joking half serious on my friend’s wall:

"i was looking at the picture of the catholic church. i hope you weren’t down there converting the catholics 😛 "

He replies:

“only the one’s who were’t christian!”

I am now even more pissed. My experience with evangelicals has let me know that many of them think that Catholics are definitely NOT Christian. It doesn’t matter how much Catholics love Jesus. It doesn’t matter how much they pray. It doesn’t matter that they are faithful. It doesn’t matter that they have been baptized. According to many of them, Christian and Catholic are mutually exclusive.

I kinda figure that my friend was just playing words games with me. It would’t surprise me if he said “only the one’s who weren’t Christian” as a cheeky, pompous, smart-*** (etc etc) disguise for “well, yeah we were.” Do you guys get my drift?

It makes me sooooo :mad: that they have the gall to go down there and preach to Catholic CHRISTIANS and tell them that they are wrong, that they are not Christian.

I want to make angry faces all over the place!!!
Could it be that the God that doesn’t exist is calling you?

No, I’m not just referencing differences in doctrines, I’m talking about people who deliberately mistate the Catholic Church’s position on key doctrines (and some Christians who still cling to Lorraine Boettner’s Roman Catholicism even though it’s been confirmed to contain many errors about the CC). This is called slander.

You are sounding rude, either way. It is my business cause everyone in my family is either Baptist or Methodist, and when people say that the group, and consider them in, they are saying they spread lies and consider you non-christians, sorry if I hold that as a insult.
No one stated your family is doing this (and I did not nor did Matariel mention Baptists or Methodists in our posts), so why are you taking it so personally?

Certain RC’s don’t reagard other Christians as Christians and steal sheep from them too.

What does everyone think these forums are for?

Also, fundamentalism effects all traditions and not just certain protestant ones.

I’ve also come across Christian denomination missionary groups that go into Catholic areas. It really is bothersome, because it isn’t necessary: Catholics are Christian, we do have the Gospel, we do have Jesus (deeply!), and we are spirit-filled. I would almost want to say that they should proselytize an area that doesn’t know about Jesus, or hasn’t been told the truth about Him (that He’s the Son of God, etc), but really, maybe it would be best if they kept their denomination (as it is one of many divisions, and it’s a shame, if not a sin, to lead one away from the church Jesus founded). You know I never understood why, with so much division, denominations rejoiced when their particular denomination grew amidst their fellow protestant ones as it just causes more and more division. It looks like they would want to consolidate into one large group and doctrine so as to follow at least in their own eyes the commandment in the scripture 1:Corinthians 1:10 “Now I beseech you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you all speak the same thing, and that there be no schisms among you; but that you be perfect in the same mind, and in the same judgment”.

That being said, because the Catholic Church is the true Church Jesus Himself founded, I would be ecstatic if Catholic missionaries led home a denominationalized Christian town to the Catholic Church. But at the same time, I don’t think it would be right, civil, or loving to say in response to converting protestants (if the situation were reversed):

"i was looking at the picture of the (name a denomination here) church. i hope you weren’t down there converting them 😛 "

He replies:
  • “only the one’s who weren’t christian!”*
Eek, :p!

If there are some Catholics (not just RCs for there are other rites too within the CC) who view Protestants as non-christian (although I don’t know of any) they would be going against Church teachings. And how is this the same when you have whole christian sects/ministries devoted to anti-catholicism? And these forums are meant to discuss (for the most part) the Catholic faith so that the true essence of our beliefs may be understood. It is not meant per se for evangelization (we are not seeking you out but vice versa).

People accusing others of so much stuff that it fills up pages of internet forums, it annoys me, and their is no point to it other then to simply bash them people.

btw: loved the thumbs down icon

It annoys me that I have to pretend these things are not happening just because some people construe it has bashing. 👍

It’s pretty apparant that you don’t agree with your family’s beliefs either, considering you are a student of Taoism and Buddism, so why pick on Josie?

Ok, there was a bit of sarcasm I’ll admit (but I still spoke the truth). 🙂

P.S. Why are you no longer Christian? God bless.

In this case, you should be thrilled, as my dad is now looking toward the Jewish People for the full Truth! 😉 Amazing, no? (saying this assuming that you know Christianity is based on the teachings of Paul ~ hence Christianity ~ and that the truth is to be found rather in the religion supported by Jesus… Judaism 🙂 )*
When I first responded I was assuming I was responding to a credible poster. I can see now what I am dealing with. I hope you and daddy have great success. Just make sure all five of his followers wash up and put on their shiny face and that shoes and socks all match in case there are pictures. And even though they are all adults make sure they all have a ride home.

I am not aware of any Catholic organization going after Christians of other denominations. If this is true I would be interested in hearing factual accounts of this happening.

I know that my friends who belong to a mega church went every year for two weeks to different countries to bring people who were already Christians into their fold. They went after the Orthodox and the Catholics. They also asked me and many others to help fund their trips. When they were near Russia there was an area of Muslims, they made no attempt to evangelize the Muslims, only the Orthodox and Catholics.

Of course I declined giving them any money. They also enjoyed a vacation while on these trips paid for by others. Otherwise the wife is a very lovely person, I have known them for many many years. They are fanactical about their church, which has split three times now due to disagreements and pride. The Pastor is paid a large salary and the only thing he does is prepare a sermon for one service on Sunday. They have many ministries that do the real work. Also the Pastor is my friends cousin and she relates what is going on at the church. She does question some things, but has never searched the history of Christianity or the Early Church Fathers. At one time they belonged to the Episcopal church.

The only converts I know are ones that became interested in what the Church taught and sought it out. Not one of them have told me that Catholics came knocking at their doors or pressured them to convert.

Yours in the Hearts of Jesus and Mary

Bernadette

You correctly used the word ‘sects’ What we are talking abut isn’t mainstream.

Well, I’ve only been here for a few minutes, but I’ve already found the following statements from some Catholics here:

Holly3278:
have felt a call to missionary work ever since I first entered college and I feel called to convert a good portion of my home town to Catholicism. We have a very small Catholic population and a large fundamentalist population and I want to change that.

Holly3278:
…what I really want to do is bring Protestants in to the one true Church.

What do you think are the best or most appropriate books about the Catholic faith to give to a close friend who worships in the Evangelical Christian tradition?.. If you know of a book which has converted someone - or set them on the road to conversion - I want to hear from you! Many Thanks.

Looks like Catholics are just as guilty.

Catholics wanting Protestants to come into the Church is NOT, I repeat, NOT the same as what the evangelicals are doing in Catholic South America. What’s the difference, you ask?

The evangelicals are telling these folks that they are part of a dead religion, and going to hell, unless they accept Jesus Christ as their personal savior. They deny that the Catholic Church and her sacraments are a means of accepting Jesus Christ as savior, and teach that the person must be “saved” apart from the Church. I know this because I also have a friend that went down there on a medical/missionary trip.

By way of contrast: Catholics do not tell protestants they are going to hell unless they join up. They do not deny protestants are “true” Christians, or that they may be saved. It is truly matter of showing that the Catholic Church has the fullness of apostolic teaching and has the sacraments give to us by God, and that your best shot at living the Christian life and attaining eternal life is to adhere to what the apostles have taught us and receive God the way he presents himself to the Catholic Church.

Protestants are just as baptized and love the Lord just as much. We don’t question that. The reverse is not held by these evangelicals. They start with the assumption that Catholics are not saved and cannot be saved and will not be saved by adhering to what the Catholic Church teaches.

So, it is not a matter of the evangelicals simply “getting them to switch” as though the choice were between Diet Coke and Diet Pepsi. On the contrary, they are treating these souls as if they are not Christian. The Christians in South America (in their view) are saved, not because of, but in spite of the Catholic Church. That’s why they’re there.

And you really don’t see the hypocrisy in this statement?
