Here’s a relatively related news article, but I’ve noticed that the Pope has come under MASSIVE attacks this year, so much so that it seems the fasionable thing to do.

Every time, the Pope has done nothing, except clearly and plainly speak what the Catholic faith believes, and it seems that the amount of anger and hatred pointed in his direction is enormous.

What do you guys think?

No more so than any other year really. Didn’t you know this never goes out of fashion in many circles. I live in a part of the country were a good portion of the population thinks that he is “the anti-Christ” and nevermind that they also thought that about JPII and every other pontiff back to whenever their churches began in the 1800s.

Just seems that everyday, there’s something in the news about something the Pope said, always made out to seem like a major gaffe or something, and usually, he’s just explaining what Catholics believe, and doing a good job of it.

The secular world and Satan HATE the Truth. That is why you see these relentless vicious attacks on the Pontiff.

John Paul the Great was charismatic and dynamic and the world was in awe of him.Pope Benedicict XVI is more reserved and deceptively soft spoken and is perceived as more conservative. My Parish Priest says people came to see John Paul II but they come to LISTEN to Benedict XVI.Even though some despise what they hear.

Please remember to pray the first Our Father of the Rosary for our Pope and his intentions.

There does seem to be more bashing going on lately.

There was a comment on the news this morning about the comments he made in Africa and that Pope Benedict is making the Catholic Church more and more irrelevent.

Irrelevent?

I’d much rather be irrelevent than on a one way street to Hell, thank you.

I think people hated John Paul II just as much but many seem to forget how much now because it’s more “popular” now to compare Pope JP in a better light than Pope Benedict. Liberals have had it in their head that JP was more liberal than Benedict and now he’s dragging the Church backwards while John Paul was on the path to “liberating” Catholics or something…

The media won’t stop agitating until the Pope starts showering condoms on the crowd in St. Peter’s Square during his general audiences and admits that the entire doctrine of the Church is one big fraud.

As long as we’re loyal to the gospel, we’re going to be reviled by the world. You can’t have it both ways.

John Allen probably addressed your point most accurately:
Yet the bottom line is that even if some people are beating up on the pope for their own reasons, he’s the one who handed them the club.

I have to disagree with you that the pope has done nothing but speak clearly and plainly what the Catholic faith believes. At his famous Regensburg address, the point of contention was a centuries-old quotation that IIRC disparaged Muhammad. That wasn’t what the Church teaches, and he would have been wise to edit out that remark, even though the scholar in him thought it useful for context.

On the most recent issue, he again overstated Church teaching. It’s not Church teaching that condoms worsen, or can worsen, the AIDS crisis. It’s Church teaching that condoms are morally unacceptable based on the principles in Humanae Vitae. If the pope had stuck to clearly and plainly speaking the Catholic faith, it wouldn’t have been much in the way of news - many would have disagreed with him on this point of faith, but there wouldn’t have been the ruckus raised by government leaders in a number of countries disputing his credibility on what the results might be for a change in public policy.

It’s not that this pope is unable to successfully manage public relations surrounding his statements and actions. The very sensitive issues surrounding the motu proprio were carefully considered in the planning of the document’s release, which went over very well. But thus far the pope hasn’t shown the desire to make such public relations a priority.

Every time a pope speaks out on issues regarding morality sex, birth control-abortion and condoms]and upholding the perennial truths of the Catholic Church, the outcry is predictable. It isn’t just with Benedict XVI. John Paul II constantly spoke out the same issues throughout his pontificate and was just as constantly ridiculed and deemed irrelevant and completely out of touch.
The hysteria and gnashing of teeth reached an absolute fever pitch back in 1994. In September of that year, the U.N. called the International Conference on Population and Development, in Cairo, Egypt. One of the propositions was a U.S. backed one that stated “The access to safe, legal and voluntary abortion is the fundamental right oif women”. In effect that abortion was an undeniable right of women in every country of the world and no government could legislate otherwise… The U.S, put great pressure on the delegates to accept this proposition. The Vatican fought it tooth and nail and eventually made a concord with Muslim delegates in order to stop it from being adopted. They were successful and the final statement actually read; “In no case should abortion be permitted as a means of family planning”.
The opprobrium heaped on John Paul II’s head was disgusting. He was called everything to the Anti-christ, Satan in priestly garb, uncaring of the starving millions in Third World countries, a throw-back to the dark ages, a relic of ancient times that was totally out of touch with modern society and on and on. Some went so far as to say that his intervention would result in catastropic consequences for the entire over-populated world and the blame would rest squarely on his shoulders.
Nowadays when I see the media and others taking the same kind of pot-shots at the Pope, I just offer up a prayer to the Sacred Heart of Jesus that one day people will come to their senses and recognize that actions have consequenses and we are all supposed to be responsible for our own conduct.

The Holy Father is performing his sacred duty and those who oppose his beliefs are doing their job. If the Pope issued these statements and no one objected, there would be no need for the statement.

Objection at least demonstrates that they are listening. A few might actually hear.

John

I’ve heard quite alot of bashing of Pope Benedict lately, and it just reminds me of one thing. The Holy Father is doing a fine job. I’d be worried if this vile and perverted world were praising him.

i think that guy who wrote the article on the pope (or the woman who did?) is delusional or something because the pope would not reverse his approval of the bishop who excommunicated those people who helped the 9 yr old get an abortion… he wouldn’t do that…

(sigh) How can you believe those darned secular journalists??

in any case… pope-bashing has been going on since the 1st pope… St Peter, who was crucified…

Has the pope made a statement or decision on this issue? I haven’t heard about it before this, but the article doesn’t mention Benedict having been directly involved in curial statements on this matter.
Can you clarify which part of what the reporter wrote you believe to be false:
The pontiff’s message is further confused by disagreement within the ranks. Cardinals and archbishops within the Curia, the Holy See’s administration, often appear to be at odds with each other, most recently over the excommunication in Brazil of doctors who performed an abortion on a nine-year-old girl who had fallen pregnant after being raped by her stepfather.
A senior Vatican figure, Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, spoke out in favour of the Brazilian archbishop who announced the excommunication, only to be contradicted a few days later by Archbishop Rino Fisichella, who heads the Vatican’s Pontifical Academy for Life.

:rotfl:
If I had the room I would put that in my signature.

Anyway, in my opinion every year is going to be a year of Pope-Bashing… Anti-Catholicism has been around ever since there was Catholics and it won’t end anytime soon…
