Right. And so by the law in Deut. she should have spit in his face. Your reference not mine.

The story of Onan is showing that contraception is a sin worthy of death.
Especially considering that in the same chapter, Judah will not give over a third son to fulfill the law and give Tamar a child, therefore he and his son both are breaking the Levirate law, and yet neither are killed.

Oh MilesXpisti beat me to it.
Only by a nose I’m sure.

The point is there is no law that we have to multiply and furthermore I am not under the Law!
Then do not use commentary on the old law as a means to try to discredit the Church’s stance on contraception. Further, the effects of the law are incidental to the time. What is paramount is God’s attitude toward the act. By the blood of Christ we can be forgiven of murder. Does this mean then that God no longer frowns on it?

None of us are still under the Mosiac Law. However ALL of us are bound to the New Covenant. The scriptures referenced show just how far back that the teaching against contraception goes.

It was God doing the punishing.
If onan never had sex with her, she could spit in his face.
Onan’s sin was that he was deceptive to Judah.
He went into her and emitted on the ground.
If the emitting part was the sin, and it was punishable by death, wouldn’t it be written in one of the books like lev or deut, or wouldn’t Paul say something about it?

Paul does. “Better to marry than to burn.”

Nothing in the new covenant about contraception.

That is burn with passion. And it has nothing to do with contraception
Oh my!! Please tell me which translation you are using! So does your church teach that masturbation is also not a sin since it involves no “deception?”

I didn’t reference the Onan verse to disprove contraception.
Someone used it to PROVE contraception is sin. I don’t see how anyone can come to that conclusion from that verse.I maintain that the deception was the punishable sin.

Again we disagree. I gave you the Scripture Catholic reference. It has LOTS of New Testament scripture about it. I do not agree with your personal pastor’s interpretation of Scripture unless his interpretation is in line with 2000 years of interpretation. For one thousand nine hundred and thirty years, scripture has been interpreted by ALL Christians that contraception is a sin. The New testament reiterates it and it has been in current form since about 390. Your Bible’s commentary is less that 80 years old. There is no reason for me to believe it over 2000 years of faith and reason.

Mastubation is not in Gods will if it makes you have impure thoughts.
As you know the male body sometimes ejaculates while sleeping. Some say it is due to stress some say it is the bodies way of keeping the pipes flowing. If God felt that emitting on the ground was such a sin why would he design us this way?
By your interpretation of Onan, a male who has one of these incidents can be punished to death? Is that your stance?

If you choose some specific ones that are especially meaningful to you, that might convince me.
But to point me to a link with 25 references and no of them support your point in my estimation, I am not convinced.

Nocturnal emmissions have nothing to do with masturbation. The dreams associated with them are often not impure.

I know that you don’t agree with my (and the Church’s) interpretation of the story of Onan. But from this comment I am not sure that you understand The Church’s interpretation?

Sperm ends up in all sorts of places, on the ground, in the drain, etc. That is not the sin. It is the deliberate means by which it got there that can be sinful. It is impossible to sin while sleeping.

Wow! I think I need to leave this thread soon. This is the farthest off-topic I have ever gone!

You’ve got yourself a deal. 👍 But let’s talk about it under Sacred Scripture. We are horribly off-topic here. I need to go feed the family now. Please start a thread on scripture and contraception in the forum ‘sacred scripture’ and PM me. I will be happy to participate later tonight or tomorrow.

🙂
