It is a disease. I come from a family completely broken from it because of my father who is also Indian as am I. I feel there is a component that is physical. Sure no one would be alcoholic if they’d never tasted alcohol but is it the persons fault if they did taste alcohol innocently? I’m not trying to excuse it. But neither am I trying to minimize it. It is serious. And it is physical. Esp in the case of someone who has Native American heritage.

Let’s try to keep this simple … "Webster"states that Alcoholism Is: A chronic disorder marked by excessive and usually compulsive drinking of alcohol leading to psychological and physical dependence or addiction. notice the word "chronic … A chronic condition is usually long-lasting and does not easily or quickly go away if at all.

That being said, if a person who has this chronic disorder an picks up just one drink they are on the road to becoming a full blown alcoholic. You see, an alcoholic "can not’ have just one drink! Unfortunately he or she does not know this at the time that first drink is consumed … and finds out perhaps (sometimes not at all or when it’s much to late) that they are alcoholic. it is a three-fold disease involving the mind, body, and spirit.

The answer is … Alcoholism is NOT a sin! The alcoholic (unknowingly) commits many sins because of his/her drinking. If they become aware of their illness (but for the grace of God) and ask for help, then they are on a road to recovering and will confess those sins, make amends and lead a much more useful, spiritual life. But, only if they admit their alcoholism to themselves and God. AA (Alcoholic’s Anonymous) usually brings this about. However, it has been known to come about by a spiritual experience through religion or some other awakening … usually involving God

It varies with each person. Some people have no addiction and willingly choose to drink too much. Definitely mortal sin. Other people may have started this way and it became an addiction. They may have only committed a few mortal sins in the beginning, but now they are powerless to it. Some people it is only a habit. They are on the way to addiction, but still have some control over it. They are likely committing mortal sin, but it’s impossible to tell. Anyone with questions should speak to their priest about it, following all advice given. Some people might need to go to rehab and AA meetings.
