I just watched the most awesome movie “The Scarlet and The Black” It is from the 60’s I think but WOW! It is about a Monsignor O’Flaherty in World War II. The movie is a TRUE story and worth seeing. The movie opens with the Monsignor in a boxing ring and it plays a huge part for him in life! This confirmed that boxing is NOT immoral for me!

Blessings,
Helen
Was he already a Monsignor when he was boxing or was that something in his past that lead up to him becoming a priest?

If it has opened with Mosignor O’Flaherty boozing it up with a floozy on his arm, would that be moral for you too?

I tell you that professional boxing is against the fifth commandment, but instead of speculating and not believing me, perhaps Ask an apologist, or your parish priest.

I saw this movie, I think it was Gregory Peck who played the priest. It was very good.

I agree with what you said my point with the UFC is that it is a more violent sport compared to boxing and allows for for more aggressive means of sport or martial art. I think if people are upset over boxing wait till they find out about UFC which can make boxing seem rather tame. There are rules in UFC but far less than in boxing.

IF catholics were to regulate boxing then what about UFC, football, hockey, heck hollywood stuntmen. This is a slippery slope. Like you said boxing is a sport and the intent is not to kill but to outlast your opponenet and the rules have made the sport a lot safer than the bare knuckle boxing of 100 years ago.
Interestingly enough, adding boxing gloves to boxing made boxing more dangerous, not less dangerous. The gloves protect the fist and allow a fighter to land power shot after power shot to his (or now days her) opponents head. With a bare fist, a fighter can not strike his opponent both hard and repeatedly in the head without breaking his hand.

What you do have in bare knuckle fighting is more cuts and superficial damage, but less damage to the brain. If I had to choose, I would rather have a cut over my eye or on my cheek than brain damage.

I didnt read through all the posts, so this might have already been said. But the fact that they both agree to the fight makes me think that it isnt immoral.

There have been some doctors calling for bare-knuckle boxing to be “re-legalized” but I dont think it’ll happen anytime soon. People like to see a little blood sometimes, but not that much I dont think.

momentum = mass * velocity so yeah…
Force = mass * aceleration and more yeah…

To make sport of brutality is wrong. To learn the discipline of boxing is acceptable. I know this may seem like a contradiction, but take a moment to think about it. We should not exploit the athletes and we should not publicly promote barbarism.

So it’s okay for men to knock the **** out of each other but not women?

Not any more than fencing.

However, I’ve always had problems with people who love to watch but don’t fight themselves. It’s like being urged by a woman to start a fight with another man. No spectacle for those who don’t fight. Sport is different, but it does matter how much we really treat it like sport.

. . .QUOTE] But the objective in fencing is not to injure your opponent or render him unconscious - unless you fence with rapiers rather than epees. I don’t think many fencers end their days with brain damage, which seems the inevitable result of repeated blows to the head.

In my opinion, there’s nothing wrong with it. I mean, it is just a sport and as long as both athletes are fair and ethical why should it be immoral?

Boxing is very bad. At its core its goal is harming the opponent. It is the modern version of what used to happen in the Roman days when they were in fight to the death events. The people became so bored with life they turned to worse and worse things for entertainment, even turning men ito wild animals going head to head. Watching boxing is not good either because it disconnects yourself from the harm that is happening and shrug off what just happened as “oooh, sucks for that guy”.
There is internal damage as well as external, and recovering/healing is very questionable.
When the goal is to knock someone out then thats bad.

There are other rough sports like football, but there are big differences.

i’ve been doing karate for about 7 years and i’ve done a little boxing too, but that was just with a friend of mine who is a really good boxer. i like all this stuff; training and sparring is a lot of fun. i dont see why women shouldnt be allowed to do this stuff, especially martial arts–they may need to defend themself one day.

i havent seen million dollar baby yet…what’s wrong with it that everyone doesnt like?

Nothing to do with the boxing. It promotes euthanasia.
