is breaking the law in some cases a sin or is this a dumb question? the law im mainly talking about is that you’re not allowed to ride golf carts or four-wheelers on the roads. but this is our favorite pastime. im not talking about highways, im talking about the country roads. i think it would be a sin to ride on highways or roads with traffic because you’re disturbing people, but is it really a sin to ride golf carts on the back roads? i never felt conviction but i read something about breaking the law being a sin and that scared me. what do you think?

Here’s another one:

You’re at a red light, in the early hours of the morning. You’re the only car on the road. You can clearly see that there aren’t any cars approaching from either direction. Do you wait for it to turn green?

You do if you’re smart.

Whilst there may be some laws I consider ridiculous or dumb as you say, regardless that is the law. As I understand it, we are to obey lawful authority. God has placed the laws of our place of dwelling (local, state, country etc) and hence lawful authority above us. Render to Caesar what is Caesars and render to God what is Gods. Matthew 22:21

Are you prepared to suffer the consequences if caught breaking the law?

One of my pet peeves is coming up behind a tractor on a country road and not being able to safely overtake because I can’t see around the bends. There is a long queue of traffic and eventually some idiot at the back decides to overtake the entire queue mostly blind and risk a head on collision with a car he can’t see.

As long as you pull in to let cars past if they encounter you, I won’t hold it against you. IDK about it being a sin or not. Sometimes I jaywalk if I can see it is definitely safe…

I don’t know about it being a sin. It certainly could be annoying (and possibly scary) to other drivers.
Also you should note that the measure of what laws to obey for a Catholic isn’t whether they’re “dumb”, but whether they’re “just”.

So you need to ask yourself: Is it just that the government have a law about not driving certain vehicles on the road?

i also am practicing to drive on country roads, with a parent in the car of course but i dont have a permit. thats illegal too. but i dont see why its wrong, im not bothering anybody and i need practice.

I’d say it’s a sin. Probably against obedience. I am of course no expert and this is just my opinion, but you should obey those in authority over. I would say the only exception would be if those in authority over you are breaking one of God’s laws or trying to get you too. You do not need to know why you should obey a law or command or even a request, this is humility.
In your second post you show an obvious display of pride by doing what you want over what is right. The act of pride is harmful to your soul, even if in this case it may be difficult to see it being harmful to your body, though not impossible. You should practice obedience so as to learn humility. Christ values obedience above most things, even sacrifice.

I often disobey bad laws and don’t feel guilty for one second. I also do my duty to nullify bad laws if I serve on a jury.

Yep I do. There’s bound to be a police officer somewhere just waiting to pounce on me! So am not game to risk the consequences. 🚔:policeman:

If you are illegally driving vehicles on the roads then that is potentially endangering people’s lives. I would call that a sin!

If you do not like laws, you work to change laws.
You don’t just take the law into your own hands.
That is the proper way to handle things.
We are a country of laws.
Rule of law is important.

So why don’t you just get a permit like millions of other people have done?

You know, you can’t just interpret the law the way you want. You need to follow them, if not for yourself, then for everyone else. It sounds like you are too young to consider some of the consequences of what you are doing.

ETA: I see on a thread from December of last year that you are 14 or 15 years old. Definitely, you need to follow the law, and get a permit when you are old enough for where you live. You should not be on the road in a golf cart or a car. Your parents should not be allowing this.

i started driving a golf cart on the road when i was 3 or 4 years old sitting on my grandpas lap. this isnt something new. we’ve always driven golf carts. every one around here has either a golf cart, four-wheeler, or ATV that they drive on the roads. not saying that makes it right or wrong, but its not a rare thing around here

I took all my kids driving before they were old enough to have permits. No biggie.
