Is contraception a sin

The example he used about Onan’s sin does show a lack of understanding.

It used to be considered a sin, but then the rest of Christianity sold out so that just shows how inconstant they are.

Onan is an interesting example. We know he slept with his late-brother’s wife and when the critical moment came (no pun intended), Onan “cast his seed upon the ground”. God didn’t like it and killed Onan.

There can be three sins here;
  1. Onan died because he cast his semen upon the ground.
  2. Onan died because he refused to fulfill his familial duty of giving his brother’s estate an heir.
  3. Onan died because he didn’t inseminate his sister-in-law.
Never heard the third one until I started studying Catholic theology in contemplation of becoming a Roman Catholic.

Age is irrelevant.
Age isn’t irrelevant at all, particularly in fraternal correction. And most definitely when we are talking about someone who may be a teenager versus an adult.

The OP does not specify much to go by, but sounds rather young.

Eh. I knew about as much about sex at 19 as I know now (nearing 40).

If OP is old enough to be in college, the kid gloves come off.

On the other hand, NFP is permitted despite its obviously contraceptive intent.
NFP is still open to life, whereas artificial birth control is not, and several types are even abortifacients.

Jesus was able to lecture the doctors of the law in the Temple at the age of twelve. Age isn’t important if they know what they are talking about.

No, If you look at NFP as a whole cycle, it is choosing to have sex only in sterile times of the month. It isn’t “Well we just didn’t happen to have sex during the fertile time,” It’s we WONT have sex during the fertile time. So it is a lot like CI.
This discussion on the comparaison to nfp and coitus interuptus is borderline absurd…

No, no, “CI” is a modification of the sexual act, as it not end as it is orderered, by man’s will. We want sex, but not the natural consequence.
NFP is periodical continence, and continence is a virtue for all people. Particularly consecrated people, but married people are practicing it periodically when they choose to not have relation for a time.
When they unite, the act is natural, and ordered toward procreation.

And note, the Church never approve CI.

It is very much an issue to being ‘open to life’. A man and woman want to get married but they want to hold off on children for various reasons…careers, save money, travel. They vow to use NFP to accomplish this. Should they get married?

A single person does have to be continent at all times so it is harder for them in abstaining. This might have to do with how relationships are affected by continence, but I’m not sure.

as someone who is a carrier of SMA type 1 and watched my parents bury 2 of my 3 siblings that is something i do not want to go through as a parent or put my parents through again.

King Solomon had wisdom that surpassed the people of his day and he was a youth when that happened.

There is a difference between not buying it, and grossly misrepresenting and simplifying it to the point that it no longer resembles itself.

Hahaha, maybe so. Or maybe (more likely) you feel a little stung by decent critiques of the Catholic view on things.
You’ve not given a decent critique. You’ve oversimplified and misrepresented. You are critiquing a strawman.
As it comes to sex and contraception, there doesn’t appear to be an underlying (or over-arching, if you prefer) telos to it for Catholic sexuality.
The ultimate objective and aim is to be open to God’s will. Even those using NFP to avoid pregnancy still recognize that sex leads to children, and that no matter how you might try to avoid it, having sex may resulting in you having another kid. NFP allows us to remain open to that reality while also understanding a woman’s natural cycle and abstaining form sex when prgnancy is likely.

Also, the number of people who misuse a gift / teaching doesn’t actually impact the inherent worth of that gift / teaching, nor does that misuse invalidate it.
It’s not about “being natural” because coitus interruptus is also banned.
Coitus interuptus isn’t natural. In coitus interuptus, you stop the sexual act early and finish manually, or you deny the natural ends of hte sexual act by pulling out as you orgasm. Neither one of those things acts within the natural order of the sexual act.
