Is dipping the host in the wine a thing?

But if we are reenacting what Christ did at the last supper…then why is it that if we only eat the host then that is regarded as taking both the body and blood of our Lord

We are not the ones doing the re-presentation of the Last Supper. The priest is.

That is why the priest will always consecrate and consume both species.

As far as each species being the fully Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Christ, that is call the Doctrine of Concommitance.

We receive the Living, Risen Christ. And we receive the ENTIRE Christ, not just parts. Since He is living, His Body and Blood are not separated, nor can they be.

That is the symbolism of the priest placing an element of the Host into the Chalice, to demonstrate that Christ is Risen and the Body and Blood are no longer separated.

This when we receive the smallest particle of the species of bread, or the smallest drop from the chalice, we receive ALL of Christ, His Body, His Blood, His Soul and His Divinity.

It could not be otherwise.

Most churches that I know of offer both bread and wine during mass. I don’t agree with taking the host only is regarded as taking His Precious Blood as well. It is not present.

Thank you Brendan; I stand corrected. Why then, do we and many other churches offer both species?

I has a fuller sign value. Receiving both species points towards the reality that we receive both the Body and Blood when we receive Holy Communion.

The Reality is there in a single species, but the reception of both helps us to understand the Reality better ( or at least that is the goal)

Either way, the laity are under no obligation to receive at all at any given Mass, let alone via both species. And the Church is under no obligation to offer both species. She can (and has) restricted the laity to only a single species, and has done so without violating any command of Christ.

However, as I see it, the only caveat here is that the people might get confused. I have heard it from many people that they want both species at a daily mass and not only on Sundays because they want to receive the Blood of Christ. They don’t get it as you explained. And yes, I have heard a priest say that just receiving the Body is good enough without further explanation.
