I fear this Yes user’s showing up might be serendipity at work, or an alternate account by the OP. :confused: I hope it is the former.

Also, calling people gnostics for trying to avoid venial sin? That’s like me calling you a Mason for being somewhat lenient on this matter. Do you see why doing so is ridiculous, disingenuous, and wrong?

  1. The places are usually liquor saloons, low theaters, indecent dances, entertainments, amusements, exhibitions, and all immoral resorts of any kind, whether we sin in them or not;
While faith and morality never change, keep in mind that the BC was first written in 1885, for a different society. The old-fashioned phrases used in this passage are an example. In those days, going to a bar for a drink, at least in this country, was not really a respectable thing. Even groups of women would never, ever visit a “liquor saloon” unescorted, and for a woman by herself, she would either be a prostitute or a woman of very loose morals. I had to Google the term “low theater” and it seems to refer to stage performances of questionable morality; the closest thing we would have today are X-rated theaters and (pardon me) strip clubs. “Resort” meant simply someplace that many people go to; again, the closest thing we would have is a nightclub, music venue, or the like, which can be morally neutral or sinful depending on what is going on at the club in question. Language was used differently, and the appropriateness of this or that social venue was seen in a different light. Also, the status and role of women was completely different in those times. That’s a big consideration.

That said, I do like the BC, and we use the (somewhat) modernized school version in home catechism class. There is a huge amount of information packed into a fairly small book, simply taught without nuance. I am perfectly fine with that.
