Is it a sin to get a tattoo if it is of a repectful nature?:whacky:
I got a tattoo about 7-9 years ago. Do not get one. I have been experiencing SUPERNATURAL phenomena. The precise tattoo I have is half of a zodiac sign on my left shoulder blade. (Scorpio). I am in the process of getting it removed. WACKY WACKY stuff has been happening to me.

Just because you have, doesn’t make you the case for everybody.

In the same manner just because you got stung by a jellyfish, doesn’t mean you should tell everyone that swimming is bad. šŸ˜›

I never have gotten stung or bitten by anything in the water. I know you are trying to make a comparison/analogy/talk in parables as Jesus used to, but I don’t understand. I want to shed light on the subject because my fellow Catholics want to know about the subject of tattoos.

It’s like a tattoo that I got in a past life, and it had to remain there in this one as well. I felt like a puppet on a string going into the store to get it.

I’m sorry to hear about your negative experience with a tattoo. Just curious…Do you believe that if you had tattooed a Christian symbol on your shoulder that you would be having positive supernatural experiences today?

I have 3 tattoos two of which are labarums and I have no problems and do not regret them in the least. Just because you have had negative experiences doesn’t mean other people will.

Tatoos…???

Oh NO…!!!

I don’t want any grafitti on my house… so why would I want any on my body…???

And kinky body piercings…? Hell NO…! I don’t want any holes in me that I wasn’t born with.

I think you might have some confusion about things like supernatural influences and ā€œpast livesā€. You might want to research Catholic beliefs on those.

as to the tattoos…I have 3. the newest one is a Sacred Heart of Jesus that covers an old way of life tattoo. No problems, no issues, and I love them. my suggestions to ppl contemplating tattoos are (1) consider placement carefully, you might want to or have to cover them up; (2) consider long and hard, put some effort into the design so that it is unique and original; (3) do not get anyone’s name tattooed on your body; and, finally, (4) if you aren’t a bounty hunter or a professional tattoo artist, don’t get a tattoo on your neck!

I think it needs to be said here that tatooing was an intrgral part of every primitive society and does have a long association with occultism and general savegry, ā€œā€¦as in the days of Noahā€ Matthew: 24:37] and that means that tatooing can be seen as a sigh of the time that the end times are coming. [Matthew: 24:33-34]

Read my analogy again nice and slow. It’ll come to ya. šŸ‘

Catholics don’t believe in reincarnation. Better check your catechism.

Speak for yourself. I walk into my sister’s room and she’s done quite a number with just a marker and some cheap paint. The place definitely is quite an expression of herself.

Right and eating pork was considered unclean because they thought pigs were dirty.

P.S.

As a descendant of these so-called ā€˜savages’, thank you for insulting my ancestors. People like you make me wish the Spanish just came by and dropped off their religion and keeping the rest of their Eurocentric arrogance from setting foot on my nation’s shores.

Despite this point of view, theology of the body, in which the body speaks a ā€œlanguageā€, my tattoo is the belief about a useless one. My tattoos have frozen me in particular, a time in my life that simply does not reflect what they are now. I’m not embarrassed or ashamed of my tattoos, but they need explanation. Sometimes they have worked well in the instruments of evangelization (people approach me to ask them, who would think that I want to share Christ with them), and the Lord uses everything for His glory, but if I could go back I would be evident to all.
Ho a paio di Tatuaggi nel mio passato, Wilder Days. Io sinceramente non piace fatto che essi sono it intrinsecamente Cattiva, it grew Alcuni sono messaggi che that it backup.

How embarrassing would come face to face with the Almighty is a tattoo of bad taste and body that has given you. No rocks to hide under the sky.

My friend from church is planning on getting one, he aparently has been waiting and deciding since he was 16 (now 22). I’m not really for tattoo’s but this one is actually pretty cool i think… Its a cross with the Latin words Pater, Filius, Spiritus Sanctus and below that Uni, Sanctae, Catholicae…Is that a sin?

If a tatoo obtained purely for reasons of pride, to show off, or if it is obtained exclusively for the purpose of eliciting a sexual response as some piercings are, they are sinful.

To intentionally cause someone to lust is a sin against purity. To display one’s body in a sexual way is a sin against the virtue of modesty.

Some are worn as adornment, to accentuate the beauty of the human body and as such, it is no different from jewelry. But when the intention or effect is purely pride or purely sexual, it crosses over into sin. Full knowledge of the effect or intent in light of the Church’s clear teaching on sexual immorality and pride makes it a grave sin.

I don’t think it’s a sin. It might even be an evangelization tool every time he has to explain the Latin words to someone. It will also serve as a nice reminder to those of us who know what the Latin words mean.

That’s not accurate. The tribe I would consider quintessentially ā€œsavagesā€, the Comanche—who were basically Tolkien’s Orcs except they didn’t eat people—had no tattooing traditions. Indeed, none of the ā€œprimitiveā€ societies I’m familiar with had tattooing, and both my mother and grandmother are amateur experts on the anthropology and archaeology of the southwestern United States.

It is accurate to say that several of the peoples who are most closely associated with tattooing are also associated with practices like ritual cannibalism and wife-stealing. The word tattoo, after all, comes from Maori tatao, and they used to eat their defeated enemies. Similarly, the Leviticus prohibition on tattooing (no more binding on Christians, of course, than Jewish dietary law) comes from the fact the Canaanites—who were a degenerate civilization, rather than savages—would tattoo themselves with various magical symbols. And they not only practiced the child sacrifice that horrified both the Jews and the Romans, they would crucify any general who lost a battle (which is probably why the Romans beat them in two out of the three Punic Wars).

But if Christians aren’t supposed to get tattoos, what about how the Croats traditionally tattooed themselves with Christian symbols, to keep the Turks from enslaving them? Tattooing actually has a proud tradition in some parts of Christendom.

Well, their Eurocentric arrogance is also why your country has better laws than Thailand, but I know what you mean. In their defense, the Spanish didn’t consider Filipinos savages. The Spanish in the Philippines, like the French in Vietnam and (for the most part) the English in India (but not in Ireland), were not such bigots or idiots as not to understand that people who could write and work metal were not savages.

Then again, my ancestors are mostly Irish and French—a bunch of Celts—and you know what? Fighting naked, painting yourself blue, drinking from the gilded skulls of powerful enemies, and spiking your hair with lime is pretty much ā€œsavageryā€, and I have no problem with anybody saying so.

So I guess this means…ear piercing and plastic surgery and hair transplants and permanent eyeliner, etc, are all sins?

Actually, depending on the interpretation…the part about ā€œprinting marksā€ could also mean wearing make-up is a sin, too, yes?
The sentence does not specifying permanency. I checked merriam-webster and the word ā€œprintā€ means a mark made by pressure.
In fact, would that include bruising oneself?
Leaving to one side that Leviticus is not binding on Christians—or do y’all keep kosher?😃

It also says we shouldn’t wear cloth that has two different kinds of thread and not to plant different types of seed in the same field, that you can’t trim your beard, ect. I feel like people pick and choose verses from Leviticus especially to fit whatever their opinion already is. Not to mention the Catholic Church has no stance on the subject of tattoos.
I made this point earlier… if you hold to one part of Leviticus, why do not not hold to all of it? Are we to pick and choose verses to fit what we already believe? I say again the Roman Catholic Church has no stance on the subject of tattoos, so saying it is absolutely is wrong is a little ridiculous to me.

I have always wanted a tattoo but have always had moral concerns about it. I feel like if you do it for the right reasons it would be ok.

So… why would you want any on your body…?
