Dennis is quite good but be aware that he is an ordained Rabbi and some of his philosophy is not at all aligned with Catholic teaching. Much of his morality and philosopy seems to be based on simple obedience to the Old Testament mosaic law.
His book on male sexuality recommends auto erotic behavior (masturbation) as a means to fight lack of self control within marriage. He is also aggressively pro-death penalty, going as far as to state that those who are against the death penalty “Have blood on their hands” if a killer gets out of jail and kills again, that those who are opposed to the death penalty somehow bear some of the blame for the murder having taken place. He is also a literal six-day creationist.
Again, Dennis is very good, not at all the steriotypical angry right-wing talk show host like some of the others. He and Bill Bennet are my favorites. I had not thought about his claim during the “Happiness hour” that happiness is a moral obligation but coming from the rabbinical Old Testament perspective of the mosaic law, I’m not suprised. Dennis makes a good point, that those who are habitually gloomy, dour and negative often make themselves so and tend to try to ruin everyone elses happiness. His stance is that these people need to get real, realize that God does not promise a perfect life and get over it.
In contrast, the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law. (Galatians 5:22-23)
Personally however, I’d rather be under grace than have someone tell me that happiness is a moral obligation. Chritians have something better, true joy, which does not require Dennis Prager to tell us that there is a lawful obligation to be happy.
