Is having lustful thoughts mortal?

I’ve been struggling with them and I want to know.
I don’t believe so, but take it to your priest in Confession. Mortal sins have to be deliberate…

**1859 **Mortal sin requires full knowledge and complete consent. It presupposes knowledge of the sinful character of the act, of its opposition to God’s law. It also implies a consent sufficiently deliberate to be a personal choice. Feigned ignorance and hardness of heart do not diminish, but rather increase, the voluntary character of a sin.

So, if you are purposefully lusting, then it is mortal. If you have a problem with a propensity to lust after women when you see them, it is a trial that you need to work on, but I don’t think it is mortal. When you experience those desires, pray a simple prayer “come Holy Spirit” and/or ask for forgiveness. IOW…get in the habit of immediately rejecting those thoughts. It is still good to take these sins to Confession, even if they are venial.

To view pornography (willful choice), masturbate (willful choice), etc. are mortal sins.

To dwell on lustful thoughts is mortal, according to Catholic theology. It’s relatively easy to tell the difference, at least for me. I mean, there are borderline cases where I entertain the sinful thought for a split second, but generally I know if I have deliberately engaged in a fantasy or deliberately continued to look at a woman in a lustful way–simply looking at a beautiful woman and feeling desire is not a mortal sin.

Probably…because you’re violating the commandment, Thou shall not covet thy neighbor’s wife (future, past or present)

It depends on what you do with these thoughts. If an attractive woman crosses your path and you momentarily think “she’s hot” or whatever, that’s perfectly normal. But if you deliberately go looking for hot girls or invite those thoughts to stay for awhile, undressing her with your eyes or fantasizing about what you’d like to do with her if you had the chance, then it crosses the line into sin, perhaps even mortal sin.

There is this delightful little law in Islam, something to the effect of, don’t look at a woman. If you’re engaging in buisness, look at her only as long as you need to, and anywhere else, just long enough to keep from running into eachother.

Something like that. Rather inspired, wouldn’t you say, especially when they keep their women all covered up.

So, I think the general consensus is that having this vile thoughts is indeed a mortal sin.

Our Lord said to gouge out the eye that causes you to sin, so, rather, from whence do these thoughts originate? What causes them, and how can they be purged from the body?

In my personal opinion, it all stems from not being properly trained. Like Pavlov’s(sp?) dogs, who associated a bell with food, so must we from our childhood associate all that is evil with pain and eternal damnation.

What’s more, I think we often confuse ignorance with innocence. Can’t we keep things on a “need-to-know” basis, and leave it at “and that’s a sin, so unless you want to burn in the lake of fire for all eternity, you better not do it!”

People are too soft with their kids. :hypno:

And to think, that you thought “she’s hot”!!
Your mother ought wash your mouth out with scalding hot soap!

Come now man, what about chivalry, and treating the women-folk like LADYs?

IMHO, there’s no way anyone on this forum can say whether your thoughts constitute a mortal sin. Leave that determination to your priest.

In general, lustful thoughts are the product of a lustful will. It is the will that should be addressed. Otherwise you’re treating a symptom versus a disease. By the way, you can’t do it alone. You will need to Christ to help you redeem your fallen will.

Actually that’s not coveting. I once tried to confess that to a very orthodox Catholic priest and told him that I coveted over wanting a new car as my neighbor had a new one. He said that was NOT coveting. Coveting would be if I deliberately and specifically desired my neighbors car, not wanting a new one like his.

I also struggle with lustful thoughts and I always confess it when I go to confession. That said, I don’t think it is mortal in most cases where the thought just involuntarily pops up in your head and you immediately dismiss it. However, if you entertain the thoughts then it could be mortal.

The Curé of Árs St. John Vianney said, it’s not your fault if a bird flies over your head. It is your fault if you build a nest for it in your hair!

Same can be said for lustful thoughts. You can’t stop them flying through your mind from time to time, but you can stop your self from entertaining them.

To be mortal, these thoughts would have to be pretty serious (grave matter) and you would have to give them your consent to be there. Even if not, it could still be a serious sin if it contains grave matter.

Best thing is just to take them to confession.👍

Hope that helps!

Yep. My pastor made the comments last night that we are lucky as Catholics. Luther taught that any lustful thought is a sin. We have what he joked about as a “three second rule”…it isn’t really three seconds, but bottomline, if a lustful thought enters your mind, reject it!

At any rate if you don’t entertain on lustful thoughts, these thoughts in general are venial sins.

How does the joke go? “No father, I didn’t entertain lustful thoughts…they entertained me.” 😃 😛
