Apologies - acronyms tend to blur into each other for me at times 'm afraid. I was indeed thinking of the UDF … no, URL … or is it URTI? 😳

My brother-in-law served in the Regiment. He was a sniper and, among other things, took part in the Loughgall Ambush. He maintains that the army was sent to ‘do a job with one arm tied behind its back’.

Looking back, and bearing in mind that I’ve a daughter, and Irish born grandson, both living in Dublin…and friends, now dead, who were also from Eire, I feel great sadness over it all. Such a waste of life. As I write I can hear one friend’s: ‘Dublin was…Belfast is…Cork will be!’ She was from Westport, in Mayo. A very fiery lass! Memories.

I’ve never been happy with that statement. I suspect it’s made by squaddies who would have loved the chance to act like SS Einsatzgruppen. 2 Para springs to mind!

Agreed. My brother-in-law still keeps contact with his military mates. According to him…and I believe it…there’s uproar over soldier F being ‘threatened’ with trial!

‘Civilization is but a thin veneer stretched across the passions of the human heart.’ (Bill Moyes).

Try and watch the YouTube vid of the song ‘Tomorrow Belongs to Me’, from Cabaret. Look for the old man. That’s what I feel when thinking about how crazy we can be!

Agreed.

Sorry…must say goodbye for now. My cat has decided she needs a cuddle…and afterwards…I need to make some grub…something fattening, before my wife gets home!

Many thanks for sharing thoughts…and memories. I really appreciate your time.

May God bless you - and your family - and give you lasting peace. Very best regards.

Paul.

Could it be that students living in the West are more likely to have absorbed some Christian history (especially about the religion’s founding) than to know a lot about the history of Islam, and therefore the textbook has more concentrated information on the latter? (Not to mention that a goodly portion of European history is unavoidably also going to be Christian, and for a long time specifically Catholic, history as well.)

The text is biased. Whatever the reason, I’m not devoting any more class time to Islam.

Is Islam as a religion responsible for inspiring the attacks?
Islam is an abstract concept. Evil people knocked down the towers.

The evil people came from a corrupt culture, where violence against innocent persons was not sufficiently condemned.

“corrupt culture” is an abstract concept; Islam as a historic faith has definite and “fixed” positions that makes it supreamasist and aggressive when diligently followed.

While Islam is an evil false religion, there should be more options on the poll. I thought the question would be whether or not it was Islam or literally by another group or by someone else ie by the government etc and designers of the buildings.

I’m not saying that it’s not Islamic, just saying there should be more options on the poll as these are not the only options which are humanly possible to be the case.

Above it says “or…” as if only two could be the case

Why are they evil? Muslims are asked to pray five times a day, they take modesty more seriously than we do. They fast, families and marriage are important to them, they do not charge interest. Allah cares for all of creation.
