Okay, so I’ve looked at pornography and masterbated, is it a mortal sin? I went to mass this evening, on the intent of going to confession, but the priest didn’t do it, so I was too late. I had these sins on my heart, and I wasn’t sure if I should receive communion, because I wasn’t sure if those two things were mortal sins, though I had read up about it, but wasn’t 100%. I was already going to be an Extraordinary Minister, and I thought of backing out, but I need the Eucharist… and I wanted to go to confession. Please help.

Both the viewing of pornography and the act of masturbation are considered to be mortal sins. I am sure another poster can elaborate on these issues.

And then I received holy communion, so is that another mortal sin?

What do you mean confessed by name? And besides, I wasn’t sure if they were mortal sins 100% so I didn’t have full knowledge. I’m still going to confess all of these things because my conscience is strong.

You don’t have to be 100% sure, you just have to know that what you are doing is sinful. Every Catholic over the age of 6 ought to know.

It’s clear to me, from your statements on this thread, that you knew.

You also had the ability to look up the answer before you committed the act, so your ignorance is culpable.

You ought to go to Confession right away - certainly no later than tomorrow.

Don’t go past this point without talking in person with your priest. Don’t take any of these posts as a substitute for talking to your priest.

This is a matter you must resolve. Properly.

Clearly, he should talk to the priest IN THE CONFESSIONAL, where his comments will be protected by the seal of the Confessional.

I don’t know what you have against that Sacrament, although you claim to be a non-Christian.

Would looking at a picture of a very good looking woman posing in a bikini be considered pornography?

Will God damn you to eternal hellfire because you masturbated? I can’t answer that, only God can. Not people here. God knows what is truly in your heart, and if it is a good one. I can say that the Catholic Church is has certain requirements for a sin to be mortal. And addiction and habit comes into play, certainly in masturbation, as to whether or not it is a mortal sin. Make a confession when you can. We can’t tell you if it was mortal.

Only you and God know if it was a mortal sin.

By the way, “u” not “e” in “masturbated.”

Can you give a reference for Catholic teaching on this? Thanks.

Frankly, from what you have written you DID know they are both grave sins and should not have received Communion prior to Confession. By receiving you committed a further grave sin.

CCC 2354 Pornography consists in removing real or simulated sexual acts from the intimacy of the partners, in order to display them deliberately to third parties. It offends against chastity because it perverts the conjugal act, the intimate giving of spouses to each other. It does grave injury to the dignity of its participants (actors, vendors, the public), since each one becomes an object of base pleasure and illicit profit for others. It immerses all who are involved in the illusion of a fantasy world. It is a grave offense. Civil authorities should prevent the production and distribution of pornographic materials.

CCC 2352 By masturbation is to be understood the deliberate stimulation of the genital organs in order to derive sexual pleasure. “Both the Magisterium of the Church, in the course of a constant tradition, and the moral sense of the faithful have been in no doubt and have firmly maintained that masturbation is an intrinsically and gravely disordered action.” “The deliberate use of the sexual faculty, for whatever reason, outside of marriage is essentially contrary to its purpose.” For here sexual pleasure is sought outside of “the sexual relationship which is demanded by the moral order and in which the total meaning of mutual self-giving and human procreation in the context of true love is achieved.”

3 Q. Is impurity a great sin?
A. It is a most grave and abominable sin in the sight of God and man; it lowers man to the condition of the brute; it drags him into many other sins and vices; and it provokes the most terrible chastisements both in this world and in the next.

– 1911 Catechism

Thanks for all your advice. Im going to go to confession of course and ask the priest.

Objectively it is grave matter for mortal sin…(and these you mentioned I would confess…even if you have some doubt if you had “full knowledge”…if it is really a doubt…one mentions such…but really confess this…and the other things too…)

But yes “objectively it is mortal sin (grave matter)” the question of if a person committed a mortal sin of course also involves knowledge and complete consent…but in this case…and with these sorts of sins…I would always bring them to the confessional…and tell it like it is…(if one has real doubt…say so)

(see the Catechism)

All mortal sins must be confessed prior to communion…

in number and kind (and circumstance that would change it like the person one kills is ones brother)

In my opinion, not necessarily. Yet, if you happen to have lustful thoughts regarding the woman in the photograph, then that would be an issue that may require reconciliation/confession.

I believe the poster thistle may have answered your question already due to the posting of relevant sections of the catechism. I hope that helps.

Man can convience himself but never can man FOOL GOD.

Serious Matter: Yes

Know that is a Serious matter {grave mortsal sin} ONLY you [and God] can answer

Desiring to do the act freely… because you allowed yourself to get into this position by availing yourself of pornography; you freely placed yourself at risk and while ONLY you and God csan say with certitude; the evidence at least points to your cupability.

IF there is any question of “am I in the State of Grace” one ought to refrain from receing [and possibly profaning Christ] in Holy Communion; until you have discused the mter with a priest.

So while we can’t render judgement: at best; you placed your soul in danger; MAY have prophaned our Lord, and exercised poor judgement.

May God Grant you understanding,

Ok…how about the current Catechism? This is, I presume, about present life and concerns, not merely an historical exercise.
