Is it a mortal sin?

Ok…how about the current Catechism? This is, I presume, about present life and concerns, not merely an historical exercise.
If you deny that the Church’s teaching was received from Christ, then you have no business being Catholic.

To form an equitable judgment about the subjects’ moral responsibility and to guide pastoral action, one must take into account the affective immaturity, force of acquired habit, conditions of anxiety or other psychological or social factors that lessen, if not even reduce to a minimum, moral culpability. **
You’ll note that this paragraph - which is written for confessors, not penitents - applies in no way whatsoever to the use of pornography. Penitents for the sin of pornography will usually be absolved under condition that they promise to avoid the occasions of pornography, for example by installing filtering or “accountability” software on their computer, moving the computer to a common area, and destroying any existing copies of files or magazines.

Additionally, the paragraph refers to masturbation in general, which is any stimulation, no matter how brief. The longer any action continues, the more opportunity there is for reflection and choice.

Furthermore, there are means that can be taken to combat a habit of impurity: developing the will, prayer, fasting, cold showers, penance, frequent Confession, fighting impure thoughts, going to bed tired, wearing clothes to bed, tucking oneself in under a blanket, and humility.

If you’re serious about fighting your sins, you might consider reading books like this one. If you just want a pat on the head telling you that you’re a good person, well, I’m sure you can find someone like a modern psychologist to do that, though you might have to pay them.

I never denied that Church teaching was not received from Christ. What business do you hvae of accusing me of such?:

2352 By masturbation is to be understood the deliberate stimulation of the genital organs in order to derive sexual pleasure. "Both the Magisterium of the Church, in the course of a constant tradition, and the moral sense of the faithful have been in no doubt and have firmly maintained that masturbation is an intrinsically and gravely disordered action."138 “The deliberate use of the sexual faculty, for whatever reason, outside of marriage is essentially contrary to its purpose.” For here sexual pleasure is sought outside of "the sexual relationship which is demanded by the moral order and in which the total meaning of mutual self-giving and human procreation in the context of true love is achieved."139

Ok…so here the CCC says it’s a gravely disordered action. Is that the same as “sin”? If yes, then why doesn’t it say so?

I’m not in any way defending masturbation, just looking for clarification.

A gravely disordered action is a grave sin which means it is a mortal sin if it was done with full consent of the will and full knowledge that it was a mortal sin.

No, a gravely disordered action is just that.A gravely disordered action. For it to be a grave sin it must also be done with full consent, will, kinowledge. etc. See the Catechism 1857.

You implied that the 1911 Catechism has lost its validity.

This is, logically, a denial of the Christianity of the Church.

diggerdomer. That is what I said! You did not read the quote right. I said it was a mortal sin IF it was done with full consent of the will etc. See my original quote above. I was just trying to help you because you asked the question but I don’t know why you did when you already knew the answer.🤷

Of course a Catholic should know that looking at pornography for the sake of exciting lust and then masturbating are mortal sins.

Don’t attempt to get an answer that will serve the platitudes of your behavior, but accept that you have sinned, get to confession, and ask for God’s grace to help you to avoid these sins in the future.

Pornography,… if people actually knew the sort of people they support every time the go into one of these websites, they would be ashamed.

People in the porn industry would have you killed without any thought, if it meant making a buck for themselves. They are involved in human trafficking and using vulnerable people in the lowest moments of their lives.

Don’t provide them with your support by going into their websites.

Jim

No it’s not. The Church does not teach authoritatively via the Catholic Encyclopedia.

Both the viewing of pornography and the act of masturbation are considered to be mortal sins. I am sure another poster can elaborate on these issues.
Actually, they are Grave sins. A grave sin is only a mortal sin when it meets the other two criteria as well:
  1. Knowledge of the sinfulness of the act
  2. Willful participation in the act.
The requirement is to confess all grave sins.

And yes, unworthy reception is a grave sin.

Thanks.

Doesn’t say “mortal sin” though, does it?

Please keep in mind, as the Catholic moral tradition does, the distinction between “actions” and “sins.”

CATECHISM, not encyclopedia.
Oops. Sorry. Thanks for the correction.

Still, yes, previous Catechisms are of course clarified (and on occasion, corrected) by the current teaching of the Church.

curlycatholic18…

if this is an ongoing problem, seek help from a regular confessor… THIS book has helped
many…including me

there is hope…don’t despair of an inability to stop. That is a lie from the pit of hell. If you want to talk frankly about it, IM me…

Trust in Jesus…

Don’t go past this point without talking in person with your priest. Don’t take any of these posts as a substitute for talking to your priest.

This is a matter you must resolve. Properly.
Online confessions do not count OP. You must try to find the courage to go to a priest.
I am sorry to repeat my advice to you here, but feel I must.

You can not go through your life as if it is a virtual one.

I love that response! We must live our REAL life!

Oh, good, then we can wait for the future Magisterium to correct the current Catechism’s unfortunately common misinterpretation that anyone who complains “it’s too hard” can masturbate freely without compunction and still receive Communion?

Or better yet, why not just throw the current Catechism out and wait for version 5.0? I mean, why bother with it, if it is subject to correction?

You are free to think such. I doubt you’d find much support from Catholic teaching, but if you have any, please share.

If I understand your thought correctly (and please correct any misunderstanding) you seem to have a problem with the development of doctrine.

Let’s take the catechisms as an example. Catechisms did not exist until the second millennium. So why bother with them at all? They were an innovation. Something new. A change. And so…unnecessary? Not to be believed? If Jesus and the Apostles didn’t have a catechism, why should we care about them?

I have no problem with the development of doctrine.

You seem to have a problem with the dogma that Christian doctrine doesn’t change.
