I believe I did a thread on the subject, and I said that if the doctor ordered it that it would make it legal and the Lord said render to Ceser what is his but look up Math 22-21 also 1st Thes. 5-13. They are doing studies to use it for medecine’s but to use it for recreational purposes it’s not of God for you leave yourself wide open for satan to use you. It;s realy something to think about, with all your heart. God bless Nancy:rolleyes:
Heh Nancy, can you tell us what that thread is and give us the link? I’d like to read what others have said on the subject.

Question for you - is recreational also medicinal? I personally enjoy playing a game of tennis and find it very good for my health. I also happen to know from my college education and field of study that physical exercise has therapeutic and medicinal benefits. Recreational can also be therapeutic. I think a rational person would even say the same about moderate, responsible use of alcohol. I just happen to think the same about the subject of this thread. There is a reason people are getting a doctor’s prescription for the MEDICINAL use of marijuana.

Rolls my eyes back at ya … LOL 🤷

i sit on couch and smoke a little at the end of a long day to relax, and there’s nothing wrong with it.
it is in this context i think that many people use it…
in my opinion it is when this is the highlight of the day,its 4o’clock and George is chomping at the bit to get home so he can “relax” ,is when i think it becomes sinful,in that one is “lusting” for it.one can sit back and relax without a puff, but it sure makes it a lot easier to do that with a puff.

Marcellus, you were the one to bring up the word “intoxification”. Go back and look at your post. I was only responding to your use of the word.

Yes I am rationalizing because I am being rational. You are the one who is NOT being rational. You should try some rationalization yourself. I find that it is a good thing.

And honestly Marcellus, your opinion of me does not matter to me and I’m sure the feeling is mutual. And I will continue to correct your misrepresentation and misunderstanding of the CCC. Bottoms up!!! … and Cheers!!! You are a modern day Pharisee in my opinion. I can see why Christ got so angry at them and called them BLIND GUIDES. Sorry, my interpretation of charity and yours are also different.

Talk to your priest. I can no longer make any other argument with you if you will not address the basic point that the catechism says. It does not even mention intoxication. It says “their use”. You have no basis for argument, it is intellectually dishonest to claim there is room for interpretation for a statement so plain. You are rationilizing.

“Their use, except on strictly therapuetic grounds, is a grave offense.”

I will no longer reply to you directly. But i will keep posting the quotes from the Catechism for sake of others who find this thread and have a chance to be misled by lack of Catholic teaching.
im sorry but there is a ton of room for interpretation in 2291, you seem to have the opinion that it is black and white. yet tobacco and alcohol are drugs, and they aren’t used therapeutically, weed can be interpreted as a similar substance, and with its effects being much less harmful than alcohol, by the numbers, that is a reasonable interpretation.

between 2290 and 2291 there would seem to be an expectation that alcohol and tobacco are not drugs, we know this to be false.

as they are drugs it would seem that they set a thresh hold of what is acceptable, as marijuana is observably less harmful than alcohol, common sense would say that marijuana should be classified as a substance under 2290, as opposed to 2291.

that would seem to be the common sense approach

what is the exact text of 2291? i seem to see 2 different versions, does anyone have the correct one?

But JD, the law has changed in some states and I expect that to continue. Why have some states changed their law? Because they have approved it for “medicinal” benefits. I guess you think that is a bunch of melarchy too.

The Catechism talks about how drugs should be taken for “therapeutic” reasons. I’ve got news for you, if you look up the word “recreational” you will find a component of medicinal health benefits.

I realize some people abuse and misuse various substances just like they do alcohol. But we don’t throw out the baby with the bath water.
jkiernan:

Yes, I know some States have loosened their laws. But, the US government has not. I am of the opinion that pot use should at least be decriminalized, despite that I believe it is not good for anyone. Unless the person is a juvenile, one glass of red wine is very beneficial for health. The average person would not register a .02 after one glass of red wine.

But, nobody smokes pot except to get high. If a doobee doesn’t get you high, a regular pot smoker won’t buy from that seller any more. The primary purpose of smoking it is to get a good buzz. You know I’m right, don’t you.

It’s not up to me to stop anyone from doing whatever they want, unless it’s inside the perimeter of my yard. In fact, the government should make cigarettes illegal - or, leave people who smoke alone! Alcohol laws are stupid - what other law says you’re legal but then you’re illegal?

In the US, people have all sorts of problems. Neuroses, psychoses, apathies, addictions of all types, mental aberrations that allow men to beat up women, rob others, and murder. You know, maybe I’ll have a couple of tokes with you! Just kidding! Many of these people need help and can be helped - but, not if they are using pot regularly. Most programs require them to clean up first. Why?

Merry Christmas and
God Bless,
JD

Yes you are right that people smoke pot to get high. But if you have had any personal experience, you would know that getting high and getting blitzed are not the same just as having one drink and getting a little “buzz” in comparison to having several drinks and getting drunk. People drink alcohol for the same reason if you are honest to admit. It isn’t just for the taste. There are grades of high with both substances.

Thank you for being personable and showing your human side in your comments unlike some people who are color blind and see the world in black and white.

I took a look at one of the reply’s by an Apologist to a question on the recreational use of drugs. Here is the link:

forums.catholic-questions.org/showthread.php?t=15353

With all due respect to the Apologist, I don’t think her interpretation of the CCC and understanding of the word “recreational” are NOT correct in my book. I have a background in Physical Education. When I went to the University of Maryland back in 1980, there was a distinct program of study dedicated to Recreation and Health.

For those of you who at not closed minded, here is one definition given to the word RECREATION:

Recreation or fun is the expenditure of time in a manner designed for THERAPEUTIC refreshment of one’s body or mind. While leisure is more likely a form of entertainment or rest, recreation is active for the participant but in a refreshing and diverting manner.

Here is a reply I sent to the Apologist in the following thread:

It just so happens that various states are legalizing the use of marijuana for “medicinal” benefits. If you don’t think therapeutic and medicinal have any connection, I think you are sadly mistaken.

No one here on this web site advocates breaking the law or immoderate, irresponsible use of any drug (including caffein or alcohol). For you to interpret the CCC and the medicinal/therapeutic responsible use of marijuana as a “grave sin” gives Catholics and the Church a black eye.

Regarding my last post with the thread about the morality of occasional and casual recreational marijuana use:

forums.catholic-questions.org/showthread.php?t=15353

I have sent another message to the Apologist asking for clarification. Here is what I asked:

Here is your (the apologist) response verbatim - "Drugs may only be taken for genuine therapeutic purposes. When taken for RECREATIONAL purposes, which is implied by the qualifier casually, it constitutes grave matter:

You implied that recreational is not therapeutic. Yes or No?

I am still waiting to hear a reply back from the Apologist.

I smoked pot and quit… because my heart was moved by the Holy Spirit, and scripture. To be a servant of the Lord, you ask yourself that old cliche’ question- what would Jesus do? Holiness has a high all its own. When you submit to Gods will and obey him, a warm love fills you up and joy is born inside of you- and you will not crave pot anymore.

Do you feel and think the same way about moderate and responsible use of alcohol?

If I get drink… then I have to go to confession- unfortunately, I can not stop at one glass of wine. I’m an alcoholic- One glass of wine is the bottle for me.

Regarding scripture and wine, wine was the only drink back then that wouldn’t spoil. They did not have a refrigerator to keep the grape juice fresh. fermentation was huge, because a little fermentation allowed for them to have a beverage besides water. Scholars concede today that the alcohol content in the wine then was much less than todays wine. That being said, a glass of wine would not give you the buzz that we are buzzing about in here!

It is mortal sin to drink alcohol with the intent of getting a buzz. It is not a mortal sin to have a glass of wine with dinner.

and you would ask yourself, why do I want to get that buzz? I don’t believe if you are in a state of grace, that you would want to get a buzz- barring extreme circumstances ( I have a stessful job and sometimes I just want to go get drunk! but thats the alcoholic in me!)

Hooray Maryrev12!

Thank you for your witness and example. Temperence is a great virtue!

Honestly, when I have a glass or two of wine after a long day at work, I don’t ask myself why. I don’t have any problem with stopping at that point. In fact, I hate to get drunk and I’m Irish - go figure. And honestly again, I enjoy a slight buzz of alcohol when I am with my friends enjoying a nice conversation. And I even give thanks to God for it with no twang of conscience. I hate to break the news to anyone, but I sincerely believe Jesus also enjoyed alcohol and the slight buzz it gave him. Please, don’t take this any further than I meant it. I did NOT say Jesus ever got drunk.

Everyone has to examine their own particular circumstances and conscience to determine whether to drink or not drink, whether to have one drink or two. Drunkiness is totally out of the question. Anyone who drinks alcohol to that point of EXCESS and ABUSE has to take that up with their family, priest, and doctor.

I think you know what my position is on smoking marijuana in moderation, responsibly, and therapeutically from reading what I’ve described above.

Now candy on the other hand, I definitely have a real sweet tooth and eat way too much of it when I know I should not.

i never considered smoking one after work as anything but relaxing, i dont care to say my what specific profession is, but its probably the most stressful job an average joe can do. i dont know if thats therapeutic, and i dont care, as long as moderate alcohol use is ok, then moderate pot use is too.

they just cant be easily separated.
