Is it a sin or sinful to smoke marijuana?

No problem with other people drinking moderately and responsibly. Also no problem if marijuana is being used for some MEDICAL purpose rather than purely recreational use. I am aware that there are cancer patients for example who take drugs otherwise considered illegal for the severe pain connected with their disease. I am saying that the potential for abuse is there like there is for anything. I’m not sure why God created marijuana anymore than I know why he created the appendix but obviously he had a reason. God doesn’t make mistakes but it is up to modern science to find a good use for marijuana. You’ve raised a tough question and I’ve never faced it before. I’ve always associated marijuana with guys like Cheech and Chong, and rock musicians, and guys who hang around back alleys and sell drugs to school kids to get them addicted. This is going to take further study and soul-searching on my part. Thank you for giving me some food for thought!
Thank you again for your honesty. Please be patient with me, but could I ask you one more question. If people use alcohol recreationally, do you think marijuana could be as well in a way that is not harmful to themselves or anyone else? Again please already assume that this person is doing something legally and responsibly. Responsibility to me means that it does no harm to oneself or others. Thank you for engaging me.

But then if an airplane is a public place should people be lighting up any type of smoking product? (Illinois where I live has outlawed smoking anywhere in or near any public establishment including restaurants and bars.)
but smoking of any kind is illegal on planes. im missing the point here. if mj was legal, id assume it would follow any kind of ban that tobacco does…

The same restrictions that apply to tobacco smoking should apply to marijuana. It sounds like Illinois smoking laws are similar to that of Washington State. There is no smoking allowed in any public establishment, or within 25ft of any entrance. This has some positive impact, but is also slightly problematic. For instance, the law came into effect when I was working at a coffee shop. We were forced to remove the ashtrays outside our door, and consequently there were fewer receptacles in which people could dispose of their cigarettes (if they were so inclined - I realize many people just litter anyway). The law is somewhat impractical in its application to smoking outdoors, and very hard to enforce. I do appreciate the difference the law has made inside establishments, and that it has reduced stationary smokers near entrances.

I see no reason marijuana cannot be legalized and its sale and use regulated as with cigarettes and alcohol. I believe it certainly has more positive effects among its downfalls than either cigarettes or alcohol. Though I don’t use it personally as I seem to be overly sensitive to its effects, just as I have a low tolerance for alcohol, I believe others should be free to make that choice. If their use endangers others then they should face legal consequences, as a drunk driver would. If abuse became a problem in their personal life and relationships, they would have the same resources available as alcoholics do, but, like alcoholics, should not face criminal charges.

I would suppose any thing is a possibility. As I said I come from a generation that didn’t have to face issues like this. Also I lived my whole childhood in a little rural town where as far as i knew no body smoked weed. and I never used it. I suppose some body would sometimes smoke cornsilk.and of course regular cigarettes. But it was a long time before I even became aware of what marijuana was. I’ve never even seen any let alone used it. I know some childhood friends of mine joined the army during the Vietnam war and were exposed to and smoked it when they were in service. One of them came back with his brain fried and was last seen living on the street with his life a shambles, divorced from his wife and son, jobless, living out of dumpsters. I don’t know whether it was the Army itself or whether he got a hold of something over there he couldn’t handle or what. But that’s all I know about weed or any other drugs.

You have some good points here. By the way Rockford Illinois where I live is right on the Wisconsin state line. So a lot of smokers go to bars and restaurants just across the state line and can smoke anywhere they want because Wisconsin doesn’t have the no smoking laws as we do in Illinois. It was just like during the Prohibition when people who lived near the borders of Mexico and Canada could just cross the borders and get as much booze as they wanted and sneak it back to the US.

I know i was in the Navy during the same war and the whole thing seemed as pointless as a dull pencil and as you say did no one any good except possibly companies that supplied stuff to the military. The Vietnamese were sure known for their skills at guerilla warfare and some of the women for being “hot mammas”😉 But that’s about it.

heh. i also think they were known for their opium, but that doesnt screw your mind up the way psychedelics did. i wasnt alive during that period, but reading it was just shameful on both sides. in my opinion, the only thing i can equate it to right now is iraq. the intentions for the wars were disingenuous at best, and we didnt have a place being there, except for the place those who dont have to be there made for us.

Hello, I would like to say as I have before that you should render to cesar what is his,and I feel sorry for the people that cannot get along in society without the use of drugs alcohol cigeretes and all other addictions.Cant you socialize without drugs (stimulants?) Why the great urge to satisfy the desires of the flesh? For medical use, leaglly it’s ok. But it can invite trouble, arguments, and denial on the part of the user.In alot of States, you can loose all your posessions for having posession, pay fines or go to jail. Whats so nice about that? People that permote drugs,or anything that is illegal, are self-centered,and would like approval of others, for their denial of right and wrong Dont forget I still love you:) and so does Jesus Nancy:rolleyes:

yknow, nancy, after reading your posts, i dont think im in any immediate need for your love. and im really shocked at your judgmental nature when it comes to drugs, or why people use them, considering you spell like youre on them.
😛 Yes my grammer is as good as it gets but it is legal:thumbsup: And I’m not here to seek approval on my english. You understood quite well congradulations!!!😛 love Nancy

Of course there are people also who can’t socialize with out stuffing their mouths with food, even in church settings. I will agree it’s not so nice about losing your possessions and fines and jail. And I would only advocate the use of heavy drugs under the supervision of a doctor for things like terminal cancer etc. But as I said earlier stuffing your mouth with food to be sociable ain’t anything but satisfying the flesh, but it’s socially acceptable! I have often wondered why churches can’t have fellowships without food especially when the whole idea of some of them is to study God’s Word As 1 Corinthians asks “Don’t you have homes to eat and drink in?” (1 Cor 11:25)

Here is something else I’d like you to consider. The Church’s teaching on the use of drugs states that it should be for a “therapeutic” reason. Now if you have the background as I do in Physical Education, you would know there is a connection between the word “therapeutic” and “recreational”. Please look up the definition of recreation or recreational and you will see the connection. Honestly, people who moderately and responsibly drink alcohol do so “recreationally” and thus find therapeutic benefits. I do think the truth is in the middle somewhere between two extremes with the use of marijuana as well. I am not for the idea of legalizing it and the anything goes mentality nor am I for the idea of the current laws that criminalize it. Those are two extremes. Just as alcohol should be used moderately and responsibily, my idea on the use of marijuana is similar.

I like to see people eating food and drinking … and enjoying themselves. Having a meal and drink is a very normal healthy human act … that brings people together as family … as we do when we stand before the Alter and receive the Body and Blood of Jesus in the Eucharist. We come together as family and as individuals to the Lord. St. Paul talks about the issue you mentioned regarding people stuffing their faces and not caring about the people around them. They have a “me first” mentality and St. Paul rebukes them for these kinds of actions. They are making a mockery of the meaning of the Eucharist. But don’t throw out the baby with the bathwater - don’t loose sight of the good and what people can do when they act responsibly to themselves and others.

What hurts is people seemingly don’t understand that my wife is diabetic and I am hypoglycemic. It seems that often the “refreshments” are things we can not or should not eat. Stuff like donuts, and muffins, and cakes, and coffee. I’m not denying those things to other people but we should not have to sit there and be made to feel like “ALIENS” because we choose not to indulge, or can’t! We dearly love to fellowship and to get together with others and study God’s written word, for example. But it’s the constant exposure to foods that are forbidden to us that is the problem I’m trying to get at.

I understand better now the context of what you said earlier about how people conduct themselves at Church activities. Is there anything you could bring with you (or even request ahead of time) that would allow you to partake and not make you feel alienated?

Yes stuff like fresh fruit, or Carrot and celery stalks, or simply plenty of good cold water to drink. That’s what I’m talking about

Mmmmmmm … sounds good to me right now. I haven’t had lunch yet. If the Church can’t provide that kind of food for you ahead of time, I would probably suggest you bring your own bag of “goodies” with you so that you don’t feel so left out.

thank you for understanding where we are coming from!
