Is it a sin to abandon a cat?

Anyway, my question is: Would it be a mortal sin if I released a cat in the park.
I have not read all the on this thread, so this may have already been mentioned. But, that is actually illegal in a lot of communities in the U.S. most town, city, county, state and federal lands prohibit the release of any animal, both domestic and wild. One could conceivably get a permit for a wild animal, but almost certainly not a cat, for several reasons.

Also, If the cat is not accustomed to a park, the winter could very well kill it depending on where you are. Theres less food for them, and there’s also less food for other predators. Which means other animals would most likely find the cat delicious. Larger hawks, owls, Fisher, coyotes etc could kill the cat quite easily.

I’d recommend bringing it to a shelter or contact animal control. Thanks.

If money is a problem, have you thought of starting a Go Fund Me account? You can explain your problem there and see if people will give you some financial help.

Do evil to an animal is not a sin in itself! To worry about a such thing it’s a sentimentalism, it has nothing to do with charity!

Animal cruelty is a sin. You are not being a good steward to God’s creation and you are causing unnecessary pain to a living creature. Not to mention that animal abusers frequently abuse and harm humans as well.

I’m muting the thread now as I am not going to argue this point with anyone, especially on Christmas Eve.

If a cat showed up at my doorstep, I wouldn’t feed or care for it. Either it wanders off or I’ll capture it and turn it over to Animal Control.

only those who are capable of loving with a love of charity must be loving with a love of charity.
thus one can make cruel scientific experiments to an animal, if the purpose is to find treatments to a human disease for example

I realize that many people may not have this opinion but I don’t think it is right for you to put that cat down or bring it to a kill shelter. God gave that animal life and loves it (see the Bible verse about the sparrow).

I would recommend letting it loose near a farm where it will be adopted (like others have suggested) or bringing it to a no-kill shelter.

At least give it a chance to live, animals do not want to die due to their survival instincts. (Maybe some very sick ones do, I don’t know?-but it sounds to me like this cat is healthy)

You could always just stop putting food out for it, it might move out on its own.

House cats do not have outdoor “survival instincts”.
Abandoning a domesticated cat, that has been a pet, into the wild is the height of cruelty.
The best thing to do is either not feed strays to begin with or bring it to a shelter.

This thread is so disturbing—
animals are God’s creations and we are supposed to be good stewards of that creation.
Treating a living thing as a piece of unwanted garbage is far from the Christian thing to do.

If it were me I would take the cat indoors
Some perfectly tame cats won’t have anything to do with being indoors. We had one like that; it wouldn’t go more than a doorswidth inside–and even that far took tuna!

Then it got hit by a car, lost fangs, etc., and decided that inside was a pretty good life 🤣😲🤔

He would merely look up when a door opened, and then lay back down . . .

And another that actually broke a screen to escape and get outside. He had a bad habit of sitting in the middle of the street out front. We never saw him again . . .

I’ll also note the cats are the primary urban predator. Vermin levels in cities and suburbs would be substantially higher without outside cats.

The original poster asked if it was a sin. Well, it has been given much forethought, and other posters have given forewarning.

If the original owners had abandoned the cat by dumping it in the park, I’m guessing the OP would be horrified. So why is it different if the OP does it?

Even Elsa was trained before being set free. This proposal is to put out a living being like putting out the trash.

This is a PET. It may have been fixed, and might even be declawed. If it doesn’t know how to hunt, how is it supposed to learn? By reading a book on the subject?

Dumping it in a park means exposing it to an even worse environment than it has now. People might poison it, beat it to death, or who knows what. And starvation is an incredibly long, slow, way to die. So is freezing to death, which takes all those uncounted days of struggling not to freeze.

And its suffering will serve no purpose. It will not understand why it was treated this way.

Yes, Animal Control may have the cat euthanized. But they don’t do it to be cruel. It’s their interpretation of good stewardship: to prevent suffering. If animal control were cruel, they’d be dumping animals in the park themselves.

I’ve hated myself for turning in a stray to the shelter. Technically, I still do. But the stray was old; the weather was brutal, and it was desperate. You could hate yourself no matter what you do. So why not do the right thing?

I wish I was in the U.S I would take this cat and give it a home. Can Op ask the local vets to request anyone willing to rehome it. We do that in the UK and it does help the cats.

Although now that you put it that way . . . I remember our housecoat growing up.

It chased dogs.

The German Shepard next door ran . . . the second time . . .

Yes, this cat had to be put down after other incidents, but it was a housecoat and sweet around my little brother and me . . .

No offence but you should make your decision based on not only whether it’s a mortal sin or not but also off the welfare of the cat.

I sympathise with your situation but I feel you should take the time to find a no kill shelter.

OK, that’s a bit extreme, even for autocorrect.

We did not have a vicious housecoat, but a “housecat” [wow, I saw out doing out this time!]
