Is it a sin to be pro-choice?

Yes, voting ‘pro-choice’ is the sin of being complicit to prenatal homicide. Please pray the crucifixion prayer for those who have done that (Luke 23:34). The people of ancient Jerusalem, who voted for Jesus to be put to death, knew not the innocence of the innocent person (Jesus), and people today, who vote ‘pro-choice’, know not the personhood of the innocent person. The prayer was answered on Pentecost, 53 days after Jesus prayed it, when God gave the people the ears to hear the words that He gave Peter the mouth to speak (see Acts 2:25-38). So, by praying the crucifixion prayer today, we are praying for a new Pentecost, when people who have been voting ‘pro-choice’ over the past 40 years would be given the ears to hear the words that God gives someone the mouth to speak, and then they would repent so that abortion could be abolished. With man, it is impossible for that to happen, but with God, all things are possible.

So many have offered wonderful insights into the teachings. I would like to add a word on my 15+ years of experience in Church ministry.

In both my ministry experience (not pro-life or post-abortive ministry, just general parish work) and that of others in 10+ churches who collaborate monthly, we have held in our arms so many women weeping inconsolably in shame, self-loathing, and utter despair because of the child(ren) they killed through abortion. We love and support the mothers in accepting forgiveness, but it is a very long journey before they internally fully overcome the guilt of those actions.

In contrast…

We have never had to console a woman who chose adoption or raising their child instead of abortion. They regretted that their actions led to the child being placed in that position. One mother regretted being unable to raising her child conceived through rape. Seeing the baby before the adoption, she remains grateful she gave birth as a teen to that person.

The sin of abortion is the sin of killing a child as much as if the child were 1 month, 1 year, 5 years, etc. and was difficult to care for in a current situation. The horror is that the one person who should have protected that child the most chose to have it killed. That guilt will one day (in this life or the next) leave the mother in a despair only God can overcome.

In addition, while abortion advocates claim abortion relieves a mother from an unhappy circumstance, it only delays the mother’s realization that she IS a mother of the child that DOES exist within her and that she arranged for its death.

The true friend - and healthy society - helps a mother in her emotional distress to accept current suffering, offering support through it, rather than make a choice that will lead her to a regret greater than any other she could experience.

Thank you for being open to asking the question and hearing responses!

I would say that it would be the opposite of charitable to give the impression that sin is ok.

The fact that most abortion sites refuse to show sonograms proves that they don’t want fully informed decisions.

Being pro-choice is a huge sin because abortion is murder. I might be ok in the case of rape or if the mother’s life is in danger.

Abortion of a rape pregnancy is not ok or justifiable. It will never undo the rape. It’s the execution of the unborn child for the crime of the father and nothing more. The abortion industry won’t tell women that. Women who are rape victims need love and support. They won’t find that in an abortion clinic.

The abortion industry honestly couldn’t give two rats tooshes about women. It’s the pro life side who cares about women.

If the mother’s life is in danger from pregnancy and in an effort to treat her condition and help her and child she loses the pregnancy - a distinction from deliberately ending the pregnancy- I don’t consider that abortion.

Being pro- choice isn’t a sin if the choice made is life. However, most people who are pro-choice choose abortion. And abortion, the intentional murder of the innocent unborn, is a mortal sin bringing about automatic excommunication for those who procure, participate and cooperate in it.

true, abortion does not undo the rape and the abortion industry does not care at all. In some cases the mother might not be physiologically ready to give birth or to carry the child. If the mother’s life is in danger it actually is morally right to treat her. I am not saying abortion is right because it isn’t,but there might be special cases that can be considered based on the individual case.
