Is it a sin to call Yahweh "God"?

He’s pretty smart. I think He can figure out to whom we’re talking.

The Hebrew word for “god” is “el”. Similarly, “el” became a generic word for “god” sometime after originally being the name of a pagan god. Yet, the one, true God is called “El” and variants throughout the Old Testament. Indeed, there are many places in the OT where it appears the Tetragrammaton was replaced with “El” out of respect for the Divine Name.

I think you’re being scrupulous over the matter.

BTW, contrary to your link, the English word “god” does not come from any Hebrew word. It comes from an old Germanic word.

If the word “God” has its roots in the name of an ancient deity called “Gawd”, and Yahweh forbade the worship of other deities, is it wrong or even a sin to call Yahweh “God”?

…does the term “Dios” (or “Deus”) come from the same pagan root?

…this is similar to the issue of images… it is not the making of images that is sin it is the treatment of images as idol or created for idol worship… unless the term “God” means something other than the Divine Creator Who exists as the Holy Trinity, how can God or God Almighty be deemed as idolatrous?

Remember when I said that you have encountered what is probably the wackiest idea there is? I take that back; pardon the snarkiness, but THIS beats that. To be frank, I believe this page more than that one.

Deo/Dios/Dio/Deus come from ‘Theos,’ the greek word for ‘god’

Actually the Father who taught me old Testament class said that we are not meant to go around loosely saying Yahweh.

No, the Latin deus (Old Latin deiuos; related to Welsh duw, Lithuanian dievas, Avestan daeva, Sanskrit deva and Old Norse Tyr) comes from a different root (Proto-Indo-European *deiwos).

No, Greek theos (ultimately coming from yet another PIE root) is cognate to Latin feria ‘festival’ and fanum ‘temple’. It isn’t really related to deus despite the superficial similarity.

Ooh, so the Greek “borrowed” the word Theos from there, too?

I see, interesting. 👍 I was always taught that “Deus” had its origin in “Theos”.

Etymology of the Name God
Oddly, the exact history of the word God is unknown. The word God is a relatively new European invention, which was never used in any of the ancient Judaeo-Christian scripture manuscripts that were written in Hebrew, Aramaic, Greek or Latin.
According to the best efforts of linguists and researchers, the root of the present word God is the Sanskrit word hu which means to call upon, invoke, implore.

Webster’s 1913 Dictionary:
\God\ (g[o^]d), n. [AS. god; akin to OS. & D. god, OHG. got, G. gott, Icel. gu[eth], go[eth], Sw. & Dan. gud, Goth. gup, prob. orig. a p. p. from a root appearing in Skr. h=u], p. p. h=u]ta, to call upon, invoke, implore. [root]30. Cf. {Goodbye}, {Gospel}, {Gossip}.]

  1. In liturgical celebrations, in songs and prayers the name of God in the form of the Tetragrammaton YHWH is neither to be used nor pronounced.
  2. For the translation of the biblical text in modern languages, destined for the liturgical usage of the church, what is already prescribed by No. 41 of the instruction Liturgiam Authenticam is to be followed; that is, the divine Tetragrammaton is to be rendered by the equivalent of Adonai/Kyrios: Lord, Signore, Seigneur, Herr, Señor, etc.
  3. In translating in the liturgical context, texts in which are present, one after the other, either the Hebrew term Adonai or the Tetragrammaton YHWH, Adonai is to be translated Lord and the form God is to be used for the Tetrgrammaton YHWH, similar to what happens in the Greek translation of the Septuagint and in the Latin translation of the Vulgate.

No, but out of respect for our Forefathers in Faith, the Jewish people, was are asked not to use the word J H W H.
I once ran into that on another forum, being told that writing the Name in a perishable medium such as the internet was offensive to Jewish eyes.

What I found most fascinating, however, were the complaints against complying with such a request, as if loving our Jewish neighbours were wrong.

Sorry, we wrote it at the same time, lol. When I posted the message you already had the answer there. 😛
I should add that it isn’t so much ‘borrowed’ as ‘inherited’. Greek, Latin (and its descendants like Spanish, Italian, Portuguese or French), Armenian, Albanian, the Germanic languages (like English, Dutch, German, Swedish or Norwegian), the Celtic languages (such as Welsh, Irish, Brythonic or Manx), the Indo-Iranian languages (like Avestan or Sanskrit and modern descendants like Hindi-Urdu, Nepali, Farsi, or Kurdish), the Slavic languages (Church Slavonic, Croatian, Polish, Russian, etc.), or the Baltic languages (Latvian, Lithuanian, etc.) are all members of the Indo-European language family.

Do you want to know the truth? God’s name is not, and never was yahweh. The pope banned its use after the discovery of ugarit texts which proved this yahweh deity was a pagan diety.
It sounds outrageous but I pray, hear me. THOSE WITH EARS LISTEN:

When God revealed his name he said:

אֶהְיֶה אֲשֶׁר אֶהְיֶה

Which obviously translates as I Am who I Am or I will be what I will be

This you know of course. Here is the HUGE PROBLEM! THOSE WITH EARS, LISTEN

This does not translate to "YahWeh. No Scholar or hebrew scholar or anybody knows how to properly pronounce this name. Amen I say: THOSE WHO HAVE EARS LISTEN:

Recall your Savior’s word’s:

“I have manifested your name to the people whom you gave me out of the world. Yours they were, and you gave them to me, and they have kept your word.”-John 17:6

Recall, your Savior’s Words. Those who have ears listen:

"Before Abraham was, I AM -John 8:58

My children, one of Jesus’ missions was to reveal the name of the Father. Now, from the hebrew from below, the english rendition would translate to Ehyeh (I AM) Asher (Who is or Who will be) Ehyeh (I AM). God’s name is **not **YAHWEH but "EHYEH ASHER EHYEH.

Understand the severity of my message. **Those who have ears listen.
**

Recall these words. Those who have ears listen There is a reason there is no salvation outside of the Church. Recall from Genesis:

"Adam had relations with his wife again; and she gave birth to a son, and named him Seth (John), for, she said, “God has appointed me another offspring in place of Abel (Jesus), for Cain ((Our soon to be saved Predecessors)) killed him.To Seth, to him also a son was born; and he called his name Enosh. **Then men began to call upon the name of the LORD” (The name of the Lord being Jesus or in Hebrew Yeshua). **-Genesis 4:25

Recall, the following passage:
“Women, (The New Eve) behold your Son (John)”-John 19:26-27

Just as in Genesis it was not until after Seth did people "Begin to call upon THE NAME of THE LORD, so was it that not until this Statement of Jesus did people call upon the name of THE LORD JESUS.

In short: I AM=EHYEH
I AM WHO I AM= EHYEH ASHER EHYEH

God’s name is NOT YAHWEH.
God’s name is I AM=EHYEH=THE NAME OUR LORD REVEALED!!!
