Is it a sin to do yard work on a Sunday?

My dad keeps asking me to do yard work on a Sunday. For example blowing the leaves. I don’t find this restful.

If you are a minor you owe your parents obedience.

There may be legitimate reasons that the lawn got left to do until Sunday. Family life dosn’t always allow for things to get done during the 6 non-worship days a week. If Gran’s nursing home only has Saturday visiting hours it is more merciful to be with her and then do the leaves on Sunday than skip seeing her to tackle the leaves.

I often work in the garden on Sundays. For me it is peaceful and allows me time to think and pray.

Helping your Dad out with blowing leaves is working together as a family. It makes light work that would be otherwise a burden of to your father.

I’m sorry but I find your response humorous. What teen WOULD find helping around the house restful?😏

Eventually, they will.

It’s like stacking wood.

We had a wood stove growing up.

We—and it was mostly my brothers–would have to stack the wood as a punishment for being disrespectful or other general teen things that drove my parents crazy.

One of my brothers hated it. Hated it passionatly…and was very vocal about it. He swore up and down it was child abuse. He was going to call CPS. He was working on a Sunday. He was going to tell Fr. Yadda, yadda, yadda… On and on and on…

We heard it all for years.

Then one day, about 2 or 3 years after he left college, out of the blue he drove 3 hours and just went to tackle the wood. Didn’t even come inside. Just stacked and stacked. For about 4 hours. My mom called him in for dinner (my dad was traveling for work) and asked him what in the world was going on.

He said he just needed think over something in his life…and nothing was doing the trick…and he remembered all the times that he got clarity over stacking wood.

The next day he went facebook official with his now wife. 😉

Sometimes physical labor is a good way to teach kids a lesson they didn’t know they were learning—especally boys with lots of energy.

@Xanthippe_Voorhees That was well said and a very thoughtful reflection.

I’m a fairly legalistic person so this is difficult for me as well. For instance, a family member cut my hair today, on Sunday (for free of course). Is this lawful? I am unsure.

All teens need a regular dose of humility, I know I did, and it is even worse now. More than a few students in my high school think they are too good to pickup their trash in the lunch room. I think it would be helpful for kids in ISS to spend at least one hour picking up trash around the school.

It’s funny. When I told my students the story about my brother they almost all, universally had a similar story. One told me that it took him many years to understand why his dad had a pile of bricks in the backyard that he had to move from one side to the other. It seems that many of the men who had learned to effectively manage their emotions had some sort of forced “useless” physical labor in their teen years.

Well I’m an adult and we could have done the yard work in other days I feel. I chose not to do it.

Servile labor, i.e. paid work, is to be avoided. Works of charity are encouraged, by our Lord’s example of healing on the Sabbath.

Sounds like you and dad may not get along, or are you a teen and still at home? In any event, the Lord also said “If anyone requires you to go a mile with him, go two miles.” It’s all part of denying yourself.

At some point in your life, you will now that this was the right thing to do.

Catholics don’t observe the Sabbath or Jewish laws of the Sabbath.
This.
Sundays are supposed to be for spending time with family and building relationships.
You are spending time with your father and he asks you to help with a chore…you do it.
Honor Thy Father and Thy Mother.

Adult living at home?

Do what your dad asks. Don’t be a freeloader…even if your paying rent, neglecting chores is immature teenager junk.

An adult not living at home with an elderly parent?

Do what your dad asks. He wiped your hind end and chased after you when you were young. Raking some leaves is the least you can do.
