Is it a sin to download music off the internet?

Is it stealing?

To me it does not seem like it is stealing, it seems more like sharing.

Is it stealing? I guess that depends on the degree and if you want to call it a venial sin or a mortal sin. Venial is less than a days wages and mortal is stealing more than a days wages.
I have a really hard time with this one. Because if I purchase a cd and have my husband copy it is it stealing so I can have a copy at school or a copy in my car.
I once had a priest borrow my Jesus of Nazareth videos to copy (only to find out they were all coded) I have also heard if you are not selling them. No problem. Maybe you can get a priest on this site to answer this one for us both. My son in law is in a dvd club and copies every dvd and I just have a little problem with this. Somebody please reply to this one…

I’ve thought a lot about this…and ultimately decided to delete all my MP3s…

Why are you downloading the music? Cause it’s free; the other alternative is to buy it. Now, consider whether the artist allows you to legally download/distribute their music (some artists do). Most however do not.

Similarly, if someone robbed a bank, climbed to a rooftop, and tossed the money for all to take, that is stealing…or knowingly taking something that doesn’t belong to you.

In this situation, somone is distributing (without the owner’s consent) music and you are knowingly downloading/receiving something that doesn’t belong to you or weren’t given permission to take.

It was a hard decision to delete my mp3s, but I feel so much better about it, since now i don’t have to worry about it.

You can’t really claim that it is sharing cause you don’t even know who the person is. Sharing in real life is different cause only one person has a legitimate copy at any one time, whereas with mp3s, you are creating copies so that multiple people have the same copy at the same time.

I think that it is breaking the law and that is sinful.

I think that the law should change so that the copyright protection ends after a person dies.

first question, i know you were being funny, but to answer it seriously, you would have to get whoever has the right ownership/authority to give you permission to download or distribute…most probably it’s the record label or something like that…you may say, that’s ridiculous and difficult thing to do…several solutions come to mind…
  1. either buy the songs through cd or use a pay site to download your songs (again, you would have to agree to the proper use of your downloaded songs as per the license agreement when you sign up to the pay site)
  2. don’t listen to music anymore
  3. what i do is use winamp to listen to internet radio, which satisfies me…there are tons of stations out there with specific types of songs…and no commercials
with regards to your second question…simply delete them…i know it’s difficult…i had a farily decent amount of songs…but my conscience felt much better afterwards

here’s something to put into perspective that helped me with my decision as i was debating whether or not it was stealing/wrong…in the end, i said to myself, do i really want to jeopardize my chances of getting into heaven over some mp3s? …to me, the ambiguity of whether it is stealing or not associated with downloading mp3s was just not worth it to me (although, i now believe that it is stealing)

I used to work for a software company that was involved in “digital rights management,” which is a way to protect digital products (such as recorded music) from being copied or downloaded without paying for them. We worked very closely with the music industry and were involved to some extent with the demise of Napster.

I have heard many, many people say that they’re only “sharing,” but when only one copy has been paid for, but thousands of copies have proliferated from that one copy, that really is stealing. My own nephew said it’s the recording industry’s own fault because they charge so much for CDs – he absolutely doesn’t get the point that they have a right to charge for their products and the artists have a right to be paid.

Music copyright laws are very strict. In fact, it’s considered breach of copyright for businesses to play music for their public if they haven’t purchased the right to do so. I think that’s carrying it a bit far, but it’s enforced by Recording Industry Association of America.

Sooooooooooooo, if you want to take that music without paying for it, if you just can’t live without it but don’t think it’s worth paying for, well…OK, find a priest with no conscience on the matter to say it’s o.k.
 
If you are downloading it illegally, without permission, then yes it is wrong and a sin, venial yes but still a sin.

That’s exactly what I went through! I thought, “Well, better to err on the side of right than on the side of wrong.”
 
OK, I understand all of this with no trouble. I have another question though. Is it stealing when I copy and paste cartoons from one website to another once in a while as a joke but I have no other use for it after?

I quote the New American Bible often. I had a priest once ask me if I had gotten permission (from the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine, Washington DC) to do so?

The priest had to be joking. Right? How would they credit Jesus and Moses with thier royalties? I would sure hate to have to switch to using the Book of Mormon where they give it away for free. LOL

I think you can quote it and should identify it. Only extensive quotes might put you into a gray area, and probably only then if you intend to market it.

I once wrote them for permission in advance and they said to send them a copy of what I had intended to write, afterward. So, at least from them, they want to see what you’re doing with it. I don’t think it’s easy to run amok of them.

The NAB comes from the National Conference of Catholic Bishops (NCCC) I think.

Whenever you take something that doesn’t belong to you, you’re stealing! Is the music in the INTERNET free to whomever wants it? No. Does it belong to someone else other than you? Yes.

You’re “rationalizing” away sin when you state that you’re sharing. Sharing my royal foot! It’s stealing. Stop it!

What’s the problem? It’s stealing, plain and simple. Now you’re sounding like one of our moral theologians, equivocating and vacillating all over the place. Jimmy needs straight answers, not “tentative” morality.
