It depends . Most of what I down loaD is either something I have on a record or tape already, just so I haVE IT on my computer for my use, or a ton of what I download is out of print, and Id have no other way to get it. So I dont consider my downloading a sin. If down loading is a sin, then taping off the radio, or records is a sin also. down loading is just a more technologically advanced way of doing whaT has been done for many years.😉

From what i’ve heard, downloading music off the internet without the consent of the artist and/or without paying for it would be stealing.
This is my understanding too. A good and holy priest in the Fathers of Mercy whom I went to for confession a few months ago told me that illegally downloading music was indeed a sin, and furthermore that I need to make monetary restitution for the music I’ve stolen over the years! He is a good and holy priest, and I trust his advice. Plus, I’ve seen “violation of copyright” listed under mortal sins in Fr. Altier’s examination of conscience.

Best advice: Don’t download music from the Internet, unless it is something legal like i-Tunes.

What about Canadians? Since file sharing is legal there is downloading music okay?

Obviously not everything that is legal is morally acceptable, but Canada does now have a tax on blank cds, tapes, and mp3 players which is supposed to pay for any revenues lost by copyright holders.

If it is legal there, then I would say it would be ok to do it in Canada. People immediately object to this and say, “How can it be immoral in America but the same act is moral in Canada?” Simple: Governments, like all legitimate authority ordained by God, has the authority to make rules that we are obliged to follow under penalty of sin. Parents have this same authority. As long as a law is reasonable and does not contradict divine law, we are under a moral obligation to obey it. File sharing is not (to my understanding) intrinsically immoral, but, since our country has just laws against it and defines it as stealing, we are obliged to obey. If we disobey this perfectly just law, we sin. That is the nature of legitimate authority.

Dear all,

What did Jesus do by “copying” the bread for 5000 people?
Was that act stealing?
I do not think so, and not only because people were in need.
Did the guys that made those five breads found themselves as if somebody would have stolen 5000 thousand breads from them?

I would say that if Jesus downloads the music for you or makes you copies on CD or DVD (or any other way for that matter) you can be confident that it was not a sin!

Is it a sin to download music off the internet?

Is it stealing?

To me it does not seem like it is stealing, it seems more like sharing.

**I’ve downloaded a fair number of files. I don’t see how it can be, if the files are offered as free. This seems to me no different from paying for what is not free: one must not seek to obtain a thing on the terms on which it is not offered. **

**So ISTM there is nothing wrong in downloading a sample file, from (say) Amazon - it would be wrong to try to download, or to download, a complete music file that was not free: unless it were offered as free. **
**It goes without saying that no one should be deprived of what is rightly theirs, however insignificant it may seem. **

Jimmy:

Are you paying for the MUSIC? Has the Artist released the MUSIC and said it could be downloaded for FREE? Did you know there are sites such as the iTunes Store where you can pay a flat fee per song and download the MUSIC LEGALLY?

itunes store apple.com/itunes/

The Orthodox Rabbi who risked his life for me when he went to the Wailing Wall for me was also a musician and a writer who lost a lot of revenue through stuff like what you’re doing.

Unless the writer of the music or the performer said you can have the music for free, or unless the site explicitly says the music is part of the public domain, you need to pay for it. No if’s and’s or but’s. Anything else is a violation of the Second Commandment.

If you have any doubts about this, you should pay a visit to your confessor and confess what you’re doing to your priest, and then try to figure out some way to make reparation to the artists. If you can’t do so financially, try volunteering at a local soup kitchen (Catholic Worker runs some, as does the Salvation Army) or try visiting at convalescent hospitals or tutoring in jails (the last will require some work to get into a program).

I’m sorry that I landed on you so hard - You probably weren’t expecting that. I saw a survey of teenagers and young adults who didn’t consider downloading songs for “free” from the internet to be stealing, in spite of the fact that the writers and artists weren’t getting paid so much as a single penny from them. So, you should probably be commended for considering that this might be stealing in spite of what your “hip” friends were saying.

Just remember that they were wrong, and that they would never join you in hell “just for the company” if you ended up there because you stole when you knew it was stealing and wrong.

Josea:

Jesus didn’t “Copy”. He created, or better yet, the creator of the bread and the fishes multiplied the loaves and fishes through a process of exponential progression.

If you’ve ever observed the process of copying, the COPY is INFERIOR to the ORIGINAL.

In this case, I would gander that the loaves and fishes the Lord produced were BETTER than the stale bread and the dried fish the boy had carried all day.

Sorry, Josea, You can’t use the Lord’s MULTIPLICATION of loaves and fishes to defend someone’s stealing of music over the internet.

If downloading publicly available songs off the internet is stealing then why aren’t the record producers banning tape decks off of stereo systems? If its stealing to download music off the internet then it would be stealing to record songs from radio stations off the radio. Also the principal would apply to movies that you record off the VCR or DVD recorder for tv shows. They ALL say not to record the shows but yet everybody who buys a VCR or a DVD recorder will be breaking the law and stealing it too.

It’s not stealing to listen to it for your personal pleasure. If however you were to make a bunch of copies and SELL them… then yes it would sinful.
Child of Mary:

First, I know of no TV shows which do not allow the copying of the TV show for private use. TV shows make their money by the sale of time to people who run commercials during their shows. Artists are relying on the sale of CD’s, Cassettes and DVD’s. Most still don’t make money from touring - They tour to promote the sale of their CD’s and DVD’s. So, They rely on the sale of CD’s, Cassetes and DVD’s to make their living, unlike the TV shows which make their living selling commercial time.

Now, we’re only discussing songs that are not part of the Public Domain, which still have the artists’ trademark and to which artists should be paid royalties. As I said, this is how these artists make their living.

Music which is in the Public Domain can be copied at will. Artists aren’t relying on this to make their living.

Music copied from Radio Broadcasts is always more or less distorted and loses some of the qualities of the original. Copies of this will be more distorted and lose even more of the qualities of the original. And, This distortion and lose of sound quality would make the next generation unlistenable or intorable to listen to.

The same is true of Videotape of a bradcast taken from the public airwaves - The copy of that broadcast would be acceptable (but probable not as good as a VHS you could buy or rent). But, the copy of that copy would be mediocre at best, and the copy of the third copy wouldn’t be watchable at all.

This is not true of Digital reproductions of Digitally Formatted Audio and Video Recordings, which don’t deteriorate as you copy them, even if you reproduce copies of copies of copies. Even 5th and 7th generation reproductions of digitally formatted video and audio recordings will have the same properties and be of the same quality as the original.

Because of the low quality and the distortion in the copies, there isn’t a market for tapes of broadcasts of music and TV shows from the public airwaves. While there is one for CD’s and DVD’s reproduced from Digital records of songs and movies. Because of this, the first isn’t a threat to the income of artists who need to sell CD’s, Cassettes and DVD’s. The other could drive more than a few of them into bankrupcy.

Scripture says that the workman is worth his hire and that you should not keep the wages that a worker has earned from him.

In this case, the workers are the people who write and perform the songs you’re downloading from the internet.

I just deleted

5 GIGABYTES of music off my computer.

Wow…

Satan has blinded us! We steal music and think nothing of it, we don’ live the Lord’s Day and think nothing of it.

What other commandments are we breaking?

Are you getting the music for free, or are you downloading from a legal site (itunes, yahoo, ect)?
If your getting the music for free, then yes, it is considered stealing.
If your getting them from a legal site and paying for the music, then no, nothing sinful there.
