Is it bad that my mom and I have a habit of missing mass? Sometimes my mom feels too tired to go to mass, so we don’t go. Usually we go the next week. My question is would it be a sin for us to take communion if we missed mass on purpose? I told my mom it might be a sin but she doesn’t care.

Hey Jacob, welcome to the forum!

So to answer your question…
Yes it is a grave (sometimes called mortal) sin to miss mass intentionally on a Sunday or a Holy Day. If you haven’t confessed this in confession, and then been absolved, you shouldn’t go to communion. Going to communion without going to confession first would be a mortal sin as well. It’s important to go to confession for these sins so Jesus can forgive us. You could ask your mom to look at this thread if you like to help her to understand.

Miss Mass, like on accident, or intentionally skip it? There is a difference.

Jacob, also, my friend, about how old are you if you don’t mind me asking?

I mean like i would go every week if i had transportation but i go with my mom since i don’t drive.

Oh ok, I’m sorry I just wanted to make sure you weren’t a minor. So if you missed intentionally when you were able to go then yes it’s a mortal sin. We can’t receive communion while we have unconfessed mortal sins. To receive communion we are supposed to be free of mortal sin. Have you been baptized and gone to CCD or had catholic education on the sacraments, etc?

Any option for you to take public transit to Mass when your mom doesn’t feel like going?

I have been baptized, but I was never confirmed. I had to stop going to confirmation classes since I lost my transportation.

If you haven’t already gotten acquainted with the other parishioners at your church, I encourage you to do so. Perhaps someone would be willing to give you a lift. 🙂

Personally I’m nit sure how this affects responsibility for sin. If your relying on someone else for transportation that might not be your responsibility, I’m not entirely sure. What I would do though is not receive communion until you’ve had a chance to go to confession first. And ask the priest in that case what to do there moving forward. Does that help?

Ok cool. So always do your best to get to mass every Sunday and Holy day but you might also ask the priest what to do in the case your ride isn’t feasible and if that’s a sin. Best regards mate 07

He already mentioned above that he could get an Uber to take him to Mass. That means he is not dependent on this mother for transportation.

It’s usually a sin to miss mass without a good reason, but what qualifies as a “good reason” isn’t always clear. I think your confessor is a better person to ask about this.

The rule is that if you miss mass through your own fault then it is a grave sin. If you miss mass because you have a lack of transportation then in your case it would not be a mortal sin and you should be able to go to communion.

Jacob talk your circumstances over with your priest and let him guide you. Sounds like you have some impediments to getting to mass on your own.

While Uber might be a solution, it can be an expensive one and we aren’t acquainted with your financial situation.

Mention to your priest that when your mother is tired or not feeling well she doesn’t go to mass and she’s your transportation. Ask him if he knows any parishioners willing to give you a ride or if he can introduce you to people.

Ultimately, if you can’t get to mass it isn’t a sin to miss. We should make reasonable efforts to go but you don’t have to kill yourself trying to get there if Uber or public transportation aren’t reasonable options.
