Is it a sin to watch a horror movie

I don’t like slasher movies I can’t bare to look at blood 🤢 I prefer movies with ghosts like the conjuring, insidious 1 2 and 3 Annabelle and the babadook

I saw Rosemary’s Baby once and that film left me convinced that i committed some sort of bad, grave sin, since in that one of course the devil was victorious (for the time being at any rate. We know God would swat him down ultimately). I promised God I’d never see it again. The only reason i even watched it was because it had been up for some major oscars in 1968 (I’m kind of an Oscar completist of sorts having seen many contenders from over the years)

And I also saw The Exorcist once. Again a film I never thought i’d seen, again the Oscar nominations convinced me. I promised God again when it was starting I’d only see it once. Again, it disturbed me and I fastforwarded or darted out of the room during several of the more extreme sequences, but at the same time, while the visuals were far more disturbing than Rosemary’s baby, and despite a brief panic attack before going to bed that night, I felt calmer after seeing it than I did after the other film, if only because evil was defeated at the end of the film (albeit at a terrible price) and the film genuinely had fine, nuanced portrayals of good, Catholic priests. But again once was enough.

I’m really not a horror fan… if I want thrills, I go for a good meaty psychological thriller or a vintage film noir. They tend to have less blood and are more interesting stories. Either that or go for the horror films made prior to 1968. No slasher stuff for me…

Another movie that I really wanted to watch was the Da Vinci code but my mom said that the pope said that Catholics weren’t sopose to watch it so I never did
No, the Pope didn’t say that. As long as you understand that it’s fiction, watch it if you want to.

I don’t know if the Pope advised against it. But our late Bishop advised Catholics not to read or watch the Harry Potter stories, anything by Dan Brown or anything that had the occult in it.

How can a movie make you scared 😂😂 obviously I know it’s fake and it doesn’t bother me after

What would be different in using a Ouija board that the Church condemns the use of?
The ouija board eventually became a popular item for divination. Horror movies are still treated as just entertainment. Divination is condemned. Entertainment is OK, even encouraged to some extent.

Movie is the same thing. And if you couldn’t tell, I was more making fun of Dan Brown more than anything else - which I feel should be the real point of any conversation about the Da Vinci Code.

You draw your own line.
You make your own decisions.
As a practicing Catholic - you - have to draw the line. Somewhere. No one else.
That is moral relativism. Moral truth is not different for one person than another.

Since the priest who told me about this is involved in exorcisms and healing in the diocese, I tend to believe what he says.

Yes some but not just movies. Steer clear of cnn, msnbc, the view…

Blessings,
We are Temples of the Holy Spirit. We are to keep our minds in Holy things and be about Jesus’s work in our lives.
Demons come in when we invite them in. OUIJI BOARDS, ASTROLOGY, TAROT CARDS, PORNOGRAPHY. Movies today are very sexual, regardless of the topic. Horror films in thrmselves may not be bad BUT, Demonic ones. Exorcist type, would be concerning. I’ve gone to learn the topic but prayerfully. If you get scared, don’t go. Old horror movies are good and funny. B&W DRACULA films w Bela Lagosi. Werewolves w LonChsney. Boris Korloff in FRANKENSTEIN! In the 1970’s they made some cool colored ones. Not realistic murder & blood gore. Vincent Price was cool! THE HOUNDS OF THE BASKERVILLES! THE PIT &PENDULUM. THE BEATING HEART(?) Edgar Allen Poe’s stories put to film. I grew up w them. No blatant sex. No demonic possessions. I always had my cross around my neck. SMILE. So, you can sense the content can be innocent.
Be Careful!
God has s plan for you. It is a good plan w/o evil. It has a purpose and a future. Jeremiah 29/11.

My oldmummy (grandmother) said that when you watch horror movies demons jump out of the tv and stick to the walls of your home but you can’t see them and it’s a sin to watch horror movies I’ve recently watch “the nun” and honestly it was so scary and evil that I felt the need to pray the rosary when I got home I’ve never experienced a more scary movie I was the only one in the cinema that was screaming at every jump scene
There aren’t very many horror movies that move you to become a better version of yourself.

The media we consume has a psychological effort upon us. This is true whether you are a 9-year-old kid, an adult in their prime, or an old man/lady.

With the exception of certain adult themes (for example, a documentary on sex trafficking), anything that is inappropriate for a child is also inappropriate for an adult. Vulgarity or rudeness or morbidity or sexual lewdness doesn’t arbitrarily become okay once you’re an adult. It is always wrong.

I wish I could honestly but it’s an addiction I only like 3 types of movies horrors, Romance and comedies
You admit that horror movies are an addiction for you. This is further confirmation that it is a sin, for all sinful acts are addictive, and all addictions are sinful. If you can’t help yourself and feel compelled to watch more horror movies, so be it. Usually such addictions ultimately lead to some sort of cataclysm in the addict, after which they disappear. This is a tortuous process, but if you can’t currently rid yourself of it there is probably no other way. In any case, keep on praying.

P.S. Those who dismiss anything fictional or imaginary as harmless are deceiving you (even though they don’t intend to). The thing to understand is that demons operate primarily on your thoughts, which is precisely what fiction and imagination are.

What amazes me about these movies is that when someone goes out to fight the demons I don’t think any of them say even one prayer.
