I have a question about giving, and helping others. I’m wondering if there is a time when it’s okay not to help.
Here’s the back story. I’ll try to make it brief.
My sister and I have become estranged. She said terrible things to family members about other family members, and would say bad things about those she talked to to the other members of the family. (Back and forth) I’ve forgiven her, just figuring that’s who she is. I still didn’t want to be around it, or around her new husband. (I’m twelve years younger than her, btw.)
About a year and a half ago, I get an urgent note from her. (This after not speaking for three or four years) She’s moved to another state, and her son who stayed here, couldn’t go to college in the summer and was homeless. She asked if I would take him in. I agreed, as I didn’t want him to be on the streets at all, especially with some health issues he has. He stayed with us about five months… He’s not a bad kid, just very, very lazy. He pretty much slept and watched TV the whole time. All in all, it wasn’t too bad. When it came time for him to go back, I called my sis, to ask if she could help buy her son a bus ticket to school. She said no. It was tough for us to get the money, but we got him back there, with a warning that he should work, and save his money. He had everything paid for him through the school for a full year.
He didn’t get a job or save money. Though he did plenty of partying. Needless to say at the end of the school year, here came the next note for him to stay with us. I Knew my sister wouldn’t help, not even five dollars worth, and I knew my husband really didn’t want to go through that again. I told him I couldn’t it… My sister got our brother to get him out to where they both live, and took him in for a month or more. Now he’s out with his mother, and has asked me again for the money to get him back out to this state to go back to school. His mom won’t help him.
My problem is, is it alright not to help?? Am I doing wrong by not? My nephew is in a safe place with his mom, and is in a state that has colleges. I don’t like to help, because even though my sister, and her husband haven’t worked for nearly ten years, and are living with his Parents… I KNOW they still buy their cigarettes, and alcohol daily. It’s hard for me to believe nobody can come up with a sixty dollar ticket.
I kind of feel like I’m being taken advantage of, but I don’t know if I should just take it. I also am an homeschooling teacher to my high school son, and really can’t afford the distraction of his cousin being here for months on end. I’m very torn, and would appreciated any insight.
Thank you!
