If we are a smoker ,and leave church after having Holy communion,is it bad to have a smoke right after church?
I don’t see any reason why. There is nothing inherently evil about tobacco smoke, much as there is nothing inherently evil about ethanol or, indeed, McDonald’s. All three things harm our bodies in some way but are not morally or objectively evil.yeah i know all that
I wasnt asking about smoking itself but about smoking right after communion
I know smoking anytime is bad full stop, but if one is to smoke(as u know we are all sinners with different weaknesses) should they at least refrain from smoking right after Holy communion
So inasmuch as it would not be wrong to go for a Big Mac or have a bottle of beer after Communion, so too do I see no reason as to why it could be wrong to smoke a cigarette. I cannot see why one might consider having a cigarette after Mass to be intemperate or excessive use either.2290 The virtue of temperance disposes us to avoid every kind of excess: the abuse of food, alcohol, tobacco, or medicine. Those incur grave guilt who, by drunkenness or a love of speed, endanger their own and others’ safety on the road, at sea, or in the air.
Ever heard of the effects of passive smoking? The fact remains that smoking is a health hazard: otherwise, why do cigarette packets have health warnings?I don’t see any reason why. And give a bad example to any children who happen to see it.I therefore think anyone would be very hard-pressed to justify it as being “bad” in the moral sense. If a smoker feels the need to smoke and is in a situation where doing so would not be disrespectful (in the church building, in front of a pregnant woman, for example), then he may smoke.
I can see what you’re saying, but given that smoking about 20 cigarettes a day for 50 years is expected to shorten your life expectancy by, on average, about 7 years (some smokers might die 20 years earlier, but some might live up to the age of 100 and beyond), can you really say that a Big Mac is less harmful? If you were to eat 20 Big Macs a day, would you even live 50 years? If you ate 20 Big Macs a day, you almost certainly would not live to 100. And what about drinking 20 cans of beer a day? If you smoked 20 cigarettes a day, your chance of living to 100 would be reduced but not eliminated.Ever heard of the effects of passive smoking? The fact remains that smoking is a health hazard: otherwise, why do cigarette packets have health warnings?
As much as i hate McDonalds, consuming their stuff`s probably not as dangerous as smoking.
Now, now, the 1 hour fast does not apply to smoking, and should Paul theApostle choose to refrain from smoking during this time, it would be an additional and very worthy sacrifice he would make for our Lord, much like somebody else choosing to fast 3 hours or 6 hours before the Mass. It would certainly be commendable, but it is not something that is strictly necessary. How about refraining from smoking for at least 1 hour before and then 1 hour after? Try having at least this bit of respect for the sacred Sacrament. Then, this could be extended a few more hours each way, then perhaps for the entire day. Who knows, you might even be able to quit this nasty habit altogether.
If you leave immediately after receiving and skip the last part of mass cuz you “just can’t wait”, then you have to take a serious look at your addiction! If we are a smoker ,and leave church after having Holy communion,is it bad to have a smoke right after church?
It is always bad to smoke, if you accept the idea that we are made in the image of God, and that we should respect the temple which is our bodies. If you believe this, then you should not smoke at any time.If we are a smoker ,and leave church after having Holy communion,is it bad to have a smoke right after church?
Very true, but we should be more worried about defiling our souls. It is always bad to smoke, if you accept the idea that we are made in the image of God, and that we should respect the temple which is our bodies. If you believe this, then you should not smoke at any time.
If someone thinks that the body should be defiled and poisoned, and that money which could be used more positively should be thrown away to do this, then they may puff away.
No, I am sorry, but that is just not true. Any level of alcohol consumption increases the risk of oral cancer. Any level of charred food consumption increases the risk of cancer in general. Paracetamol and other analgesic chemicals too tend to have negative effects when used chronically. As to those who think smoking is no different than alcohol or fast food, consider that alcohol and fast food in moderation are not necessarily adversive to health, whereas there is NO safe level of smoking…all levels of smoking, including passive smoking, lead to negative health outcomes.
If that’s true, then it could be argued that anybody who does not strictly follow all the precepts of the secular cult of health defiles himself. Don’t eat char-grilled chicken. It can cause cancer. Don’t drink beer. It can cause cancer. Don’t take health supplements. They can cause cancer.…it could be argued that ANY level of smoking should be considered excessive given what we now know about it medically.
Matthew 15:11
What goes into a man’s mouth does not make him ‘unclean,’ but what comes out of his mouth, that is what makes him ‘unclean.’
I once heard of a saying from the seminaries in the days when smoking was normal amongst seminarians “We can pray while we are smoking, but not smoke while we are praying”.Should you smoke when you are praying?
Should you pray when you are smoking?
