Apparently it was encouraged as a social “vice” that was not evil, as opposed to drinking, gambling etc.
Once mass has ended and you are in your own car, you can do whatever you want. Just don’t try to drive, talk on your phone, text, smoke, and eat all at the same time.I am talking about smoking after Mass where you have taken Communion
…not leaving the church right after Communion time to have a smoke…
and in the car also not on the church grounds…
Yes - as simple as that.Once mass has ended and you are in your own car, you can do whatever you want. Just don’t try to drive, talk on your phone, text, smoke, and eat all at the same time.![]()
I smoke for spiritual reasons. If I didn’t smoke I’d start to think I was perfect and then the deadly sin of pride would get me!Its no worse than smoking any other time. Your body is a temple, and smoking destroys it.
You are essentially slowly killing yourself by your free will & knowledge. Wouldn’t that make it a mortal sin? And even if not, I still would have a hard time believing that smoking cigarettes would ever be ok. I do not believe Jesus designed us just to destroy our own bodies.
I smoke for spiritual reasons. If I didn’t smoke I’d start to think I was perfect and then the deadly sin of pride would get me!)
The weight of research I have seen has shown an increased risk in oral cancer among heavy drinkers, but not among moderate drinkers. The weight of research has shown that moderate alcohol consumption has positive health benefits, especially cardiovascular. No, I am sorry, but that is just not true. Any level of alcohol consumption increases the risk of oral cancer. Any level of charred food consumption increases the risk of cancer in general. Paracetamol and other analgesic chemicals too tend to have negative effects when used chronically.
Yes, and I provided my response to that. The original question was whether it was okay for a smoker to smoke right after church. It had nothing to do with whether it was okay to be a smoker.
No need to be sarcastic now. I am simply stating the facts. If you don’t like it, take it up with Jesus since he is the one who said your body is a holy temple. Maybe you should listen to him and not harm it.I smoke for spiritual reasons. If I didn’t smoke I’d start to think I was perfect and then the deadly sin of pride would get me!)
Even if it isn’t, why would you want to harm your body that way? Is there anything even remotely healthy about cigarettes? Didn’t think so.
I don’t think people smoke because they want to get cancer, but they do smoke for various reasons, regardless of the health risks. Some smoke even though they hate it simply because they’re addicted and they cannot stop. Some smoke intentionally for social reasons, especially if they don’t like drinking or cannot drink, because they find it helps them make new friends. Some smoke because tobacco has fairly potent antidepressant effects with fewer sexual side effects. Some smoke because it helps keep them thin. Some smoke quite simply because they enjoy it and it gives them pleasure.Even if it isn’t, why would you want to harm your body that way? Is there anything even remotely healthy about cigarettes? Didn’t think so.
Is that you Marlboro man?
Thankyou for your honesty! I don’t know whether my moderate smoking has got me through tough times, although it may have. However, I am quite sure that if I had tried to give up smoking during those times I would have only made my problems worse, by adding an unnecessary personal anxiety to very real and more important external obligations. I rarely mention smoking in confession, because my conscience is calm about it, however, on the few occasions I have the priest has affirmed my decision, and only suggested cutting back, in the short term, or quitting, in the long term goal, behind other issues.…
I also feel that smoking got me through some tough times, whereas otherwise I might have required medication.
…
There is never a good time to smoke. If we are a smoker ,and leave church after having Holy communion,is it bad to have a smoke right after church?
As a matter of fact, I am not a smoker, and I don’t believe I mentioned anything remotely resembling the comment I want to harm my body in any way! I was simply sharing some facts I came across while searching the site in hopes of helping the OP answer his question. The health of cigarettes are not the point of the discussion. I would wager that the OP even knows they are bad for his health, but again that is not the reason for the post.Even if it isn’t, why would you want to harm your body that way? Is there anything even remotely healthy about cigarettes? Didn’t think so.
Smoking is not a a nasty habit, it is a physical addiction. There is a big difference. How about refraining from smoking for at least 1 hour before and then 1 hour after? Try having at least this bit of respect for the sacred Sacrament. Then, this could be extended a few more hours each way, then perhaps for the entire day. Who knows, you might even be able to quit this nasty habit altogether.
Being a smoker ie- being addicted to cigarettes is a sin just as eating too much or drinking too much is a sin. So lighting up after communion would be a sin by default. If we are a smoker ,and leave church after having Holy communion,is it bad to have a smoke right after church?
