Here is what you have to remember about this passage:The rich man had a dead faith, unwilling to act on the faith the Holy Spirit allowed him to discern. The faith was a gift, by the grace of God, a gift he chose to reject by being unwilling to act as Christ commanded. IOW, he rejected the Holy Spirit.

This was before the cross. Before the way to salvation had been opened. Jesus quotes the law to this guy. WHY? The NT teaches us that the purpose of the Law is to point out to any of us who are honest about it, that WE CANNOT KEEP THE LAW AND WE NEED A SAVIOR!! That’s the whole purpose of the Law.
So Jesus quotes it to this guy, because the guy thought if Jesus just told him what to do, he was capable of doing it. Then the guy reveals that he thinks he has done all those things, so Jesus continues, by pointing out something He knows the guy won’t obey! Why? So the guy will see the same thing Jesus wanted every Pharisee, every proud Jew, every empty religious person to see–That you can NEVER be good enough to be justified by Holy God, whose standard is far beyond ours. Thus, you need a Savior.
To think Jesus is contradicting all the other teachings on salvation in the NT is to not have read the NT. And again, true faith will ALWAYS be followed by godly works.
That’s all this is about. By the way, NOWHERE does it say this man had saving faith!
