Is it cheating if I go on the course prior to taking my drivers test. The way I see it is that if I fail thely’ll take me on the same course anyway so what;s the big deal. I know that i’ll most likely be nervous and even though I know what to do for the most part I do bad on test cause i’ll forget what i’m doing during the test. is it cheating.

What is the rule about going on the course prior to taking the test? You might want to ask them. If they say you can’t, then it is cheating.

You should pray about it and follow God’s will. If He wants you to pass the test, then no matter what you will past. If you fail, then He must know what you don’t know - for instance, your own safety.

When I was younger, I was afraid to fail the test and did not know how to tell my friends that I failed. Now, looking back, I am glad I had failed once. 😃

another note: Pittsburgh is getting cold and snowy during the Winter. As a new driver, it might be better to have the license during the Summer and gain some experience driving in good weather before trying on snow. If I remember it correctly, Pittsburgh has many hills?

The conditions won’t be the same on the day of the test. Maybe there’s more sun one day and you need sunglasses, maybe one day it’s raining, maybe it’s foggy, or you’re taking the test at a different time of day than when you practiced. In short, the conditions, time, other drivers, etc. will all be different, so go ahead and do a trial run, it’s no different than studying, because it won’t be a perfect copy of the day of the test, and you’re not getting a solid assurance of a perfect score by doing your trial run.

In Ohio, when I took the test - the only course was the parking course… the rest was taken on the streets with a DMV inspector telling you where to turn. I always thought that must have been just about the worst job in the world!

My dad taught me to drive in a cemetary - I remember it like it was yesterday. That is where he had learned. He said with a grin “can’t really hurt any of these folks can we?” If you aren’t allowed to bone up or practice on the testing property, that might be a good place to go!

My first thought was “If they are wondering if its cheating, then it probably is!” but then i read the entire question- but if you are just trying to get more comfortable with a skill, how can it be cheating? Its not like driving that route is going to give you the answers any more than a football team practicing is going to help them ‘cheat’ against the other team! Go for it! Even priests ‘practice’ how to say Mass before they are ordained and its not a legitimate mass, nor are they penalized. We all need to practice before we can succeed. i’m praying for you and asking St. Christopher to pray as well!

Maybe turn on the country song “Jesus take the wheel…” haha just kidding!

how did it turn out? have you taken the test?
No I didn’t take it yet. I have to wait another monthg yet. it hasn’t been six months. i think i’ll pass the first time. I can feel it.

I took my test in Philly area, but all of my Pittsburgh friends said that their course was ridiculously easy. I’m sure it’s different depending on when and where you take it though. Anyway, if you take it as soon as you’re able, the roads won’t be terrible yet. I’m sure you’ll do fine! And no, I don’t think it’s cheating. I went to the course several times before taking my actual test. I don’t see anything wrong with being prepared for what you’ll be doing.

no, please don’t!

and back to the op… i passed my test the first time around… but waited till i was 18 to get my permit and license. only been pulled over twice (once it was my “instructor’s” fault because my grandfather wanted me to turn on the brights and the other cuz my temp tag was falling down just recently). the only thing you should remember is to stay far away from the cars ahead of you… let them pass you (you’re just taking the test). yield on yellow and don’t go thru lights even on yellow (it’s what my gf failed her first time around). try to keep the pedal steady and make sure all your lights work before you go in (brake, turning indicators, etc.). don’t go the speed limit, because you’re bound to go over which could fail you (go 5 under) and leave plenty of room between you and the next car at red lights and look over your shoulder when you switch lanes and make SURE your instructor sees you using your mirrors…

I don’t think it’s cheating unless they state clearly that you are not allowed to do this.

I know of a guy who did cheat by finding out the route before the test. He came from a small town where the instructor ALWAYS took the same route. So this guy (who couldn’t reverse well) got his friend to park her car for the day in the street where he was supposed to reverse during the test. The instuctor (who wasn’t one for change) didn’t know what else to do when he saw a car parked in his “reversing alley”, so they skipped that part of the test. This Guy actually got a pass without ever having to reverse in his test. Now THAT’S cheating! :rotfl:

The Kobiyashi Maru.

I don’t think so, driving instructors here take the students on the different driving courses for the tests, so it’s acceptable.

hah, not at all! I took my drivers test on a road I drove on almost every day as practice with my parents! 🙂 I guess that’s an advantage of a small town 🙂

hhehe funny enough I couldn’t parallel park on my driver’s test. I still can’t :S LOL but I was doing so well other wise that even though I failed that part, I still passed with a really high score!

my father taught me to drive in a cemetary too!! He also made the same comments. Too funny.

No, that’s enterprise and creativity!!! 🙂

It’s common practice here to use the same neighborhood near the Department of Motor Vechicles for each road test, with a little variation. There is a legendary tree in the middle of the neighborhood and the person taking the test has to decide whether to drive around to the right, or cut in front to the left of the test. You can bet EVERYONE checks out the route first! No harm.

Good luck, OP.

I got my licence in Ohio 22 years ago. The written manual described how the cones were set up for the parking test. My dad set up the cones in an empty parking lot after a store was closed for the night. I practiced many times for about 2 months before I took the real test. I got a perfect score on the parking test and the road test. To this day, I parallel park. The lots are far away from my apartment building, so I can get a nice spot right in front of my building by parallel parking. On a side note, one of my friends cannot parallel park. He is from Cleveland, too. I have no idea how he passed the parking test. I have ordered him out of the car several times when we were downtown and I was the passenger. I parked his car for him to avoid paying $10 or more for a spot in a lot. I had no problem parking on the street.

Back to the OP, going over the course is not cheating, it is practicing. You should practice driving before attempting to get your licence.

You are lucky you don’t live in Ohio. Here, if you fail the parallel parking, you fail the test. The road test is a separate part, although it is given on the same day. They will let you retake the part you fail (either parallel parking or road test). I don’t remember how many retries are allowed. I still have no idea how one of my friends passed. He cannot parallel park. I have parked his car for him several times. I was the passenger, but I made him get out of the driver’s seat, then I parked his car. I parallel park every day where I live.
