Is it customary to remove shoes before adoring the cross on Good Friday?

The GIRM says its only the priest that must, but cultural traditions may say otherwise

Wow…that’s a new one to me…and our very conservative priest didn’t.

I am guessing cultural tradition. Like removing shoes before entering the home as a guest is traditional in some places.

In the EF the priest does this along with the altar servers. But the congregation does not. If I had to guess its because the priest and the servers kiss the Cross in the Sanctuary while the congregation does it at the altar rail.

Dominicans take of their shoes and make three double genuflections as they come up to kiss the cross. At Dominican churches, the laity often follows suit, but it is obviously a purely optional devotional practice.

But a really neat practice.
