Hello, this is my first time posting on CAF. I was wondering if it would be considered immoral if a Catholic were to own places that can cause others to sin, such as a bar or a marijuana dispensary?

Also, if this is in the wrong category please feel free to move it.

There are an awful lot of pubs in Ireland…and always have been…just an observation…

A bar is just a place that serves alcohol. Consuming alcohol is not—in and of itself—a sin. The sin is in consuming too much. It would be hard to say that a bar causes others to sin.

If you were a bar owner that skirted the law to make a profit (e.g. looking the other way as underage people drink, serving people more drinks even though they are clearly intoxicated) or provided additional services that are always wrong (e.g. strippers), then that would be morally problematic. But just owning a regular bar? A Catholic can do that.

As for the marijuana dispensary, I can’t say I’d be comfortable owning one. If you were providing it legally to people for medical reasons, then I can’t see how that would be immoral. Otherwise, though, it’s not a path I would choose.

It is moral to own a bar.

The marijuana dispensary issue is a little different.
We already have powerful narcotics that are legal drugs, but under careful supervision.

I’m okay with medical marijuana, but I’m picturing a scenario where the production of the product is heavily regulated (inspectors come and test the soil, quality assurance testing to determine the dosages, careful records are being kept of production and distribution) and the patients are being carefully screened (other medications did not work for them, they’re carefully monitored, their doses accounted for).

I’m not picturing a scenario where a person decided on their own they need “medical marijuana”, then buys it from some old stoner down the street.

People can sin in a bank or in a candy store or in a restaurant or in a brick yard.

Bars are fine, a lot of Catholics have always owned taverns, tap rooms, gin joints and beer gardens, and probably always will.

As far as marijuana dispensaries, definitely not the illegal variety. Dealing with mobsters and turfs and all of that, no. The new modern legal dispensaries- maybe. I haven’t seen them in action, that’s likely to vary from place to place.

Some parishes here have social clubs with bars . So the priests in those parishes will not see it as immoral .

They have them in my state.
I haven’t been to one, but I saw a directory for them in one of those free magazines you find outside the supermarket.
It would appear that they’re not like bars where you sit down and smoke and socialize. It’s more like a store and you ask for it at the counter, like a pharmacy.

Yes it is fine. So is owning a candy store even if candy is not good for you in large quantities

Thank you everyone for your knowledge. I appreciate all of your responses.

As long as no one leaves the place drunk - and drives drunk and kills someone.
And as long as man and woman will meet and go to church the next day - ha ha

and no fist fight break out - because someone looked the wrong way at someone -
and rock music isn’t playing, but people can smoke cigarettes outside -

and no gambling on keno - or on sports on tv - pool or darts - lol
yes - your abetting bad behavior -
that’s my take.

I agree I dont like the gambling machines in bars and restaurants.

I don’t think gambling in moderation is condemned at all, the church has had bingo and Las Vegas nights for many decades.

coin operated games of chance keep the possible losses pretty moderate- you can’t bet much money on each bet.

I was just giving my opinion there, not stating Church teaching.

It is moral Catholics to own bars. People can sin just about anywhere. That’s their decision for which THEY are responsible, not the owner per se.

Was it immoral for Christ to provide wine at Cana? Of course not.

Proof that Christ approves of bars. Yep, that solves it.
No, silly, Christ approves of group celebration of life done with moderation. Anything can be used to exercise for sin.

Is it a sin to own an ice cream stand? Of course not.

Sex out of wedlock is an inherent sin. Eating ice cream is not. You are comparing apples and orangutans.
