Is it ok to receive the Eucharist if the priest wasn’t wearing vestments?

I went to Mass, and the priest only had the white robe that goes under the vestments (I don’t know the official name for it) and the stole, so was it wrong for me to receive Communion because of this?

(PS: he was wearing sandals too, which I thought was strange)

Edit: Thanks to some lovely commenters, I get that it doesn’t really concern me, and that as long as the prayers were said, (along with other things) then I’m fine, and that it’s between the priest and God

Was he the celebrating priest or just assisting in the distribution of Holy Communion. At my parish, at the EF Mass I attend, another priest in cassock, surplice and stole distributes Communion on one side whilst the celebrating priest covers the other - there are that many at an EF Sunday Mass.

ETA - sandals may have been if was Franciscan or perhaps had some foot ailment. I’ve seen cases of both - no issues there.

Jesus wore sandals, so I think that part is okay.

I don’t know the rules about priests’ vestments.

This may or may not be relevant, but was it quite hot that day?

It was pretty hot, plus there’s only a few weak fans in the building, as far as AC goes

Priests wearing vestments for Mass came up in another thread in the past - so I’m not opening up that pandoras box!

Perhaps there was a reason why he wasn’t wearing a chasuble, a unfortunate one but plausible. Nevertheless, that is between him and God. It doesn’t affect you, nor did the lack of a chasuble make the Mass invalid etc.

It was not wrong for you to receive Communion assuming you were in a state of grace. If so, be at peace, and thank God for coming to you in Holy Communion.

  1. Was it unleavened bread?
  2. Were the words of consecration properly said?
  3. That makes our Lord present.
  4. If you were in a state of grace, then do not be afraid.

The time Jesus was on earth, He wore a simple robe / tunic and a pair of sandals too, I believe. And since the priest represents Jesus…

Hmm… 🤔

So did the Franciscan who served my parish for years . . . and pretty much his entire order.

If by some bizarreness sandals invalidate the Eucharist, I’m in trouble!

🤔

Our previous pastor used to wear socks with his sandals… pretty sure that was one of his more grevious sins. At any rate, why on earth would his footwear even be in question!?

Jesus wore what He was supposed to wear.
When Zachariah (father of John, husband of Elizabeth) performed his priestly duties, he did NOT wear a ‘simple tunic’.
He wore elaborate robes the design of which was given by God Himself as a mark of respect for the office of Levitical priest.

Jesus Christ is God-made-Man, Priest, Prophet, and KING.
He has a glorified body now. At the feast of the Transfiguration (which is actually today, in fact) His ‘robes became dazzlingly white’ as he conversed with Moses and Elijah.

Be careful not to limit God into one ‘look’ or style.

Jesus is not simply the Jewish rabbi in His simple robe (but according to Scripture that robe was so finely made that the soldiers ‘cast lots’ for it. You see, the clothing of a condemned person was given to the soldiers who performed the execution. Mostly the clothing was ‘divided’, cut into equal pieces, which could then be sold as rags. Jesus’ robe was so finely made that the soldiers kept it in one solid piece and tossed dice to win it). Maybe not such a ‘simple poor’ item as it is touted to be. . .

Such a respectful response to a genuine question. thank you.
