Is it okay to listen to the radio?

I’m a EMHC and after mass I bring Communion to the homebound. I normally drive and either pray the rosary or reflect on the homily that I just heard until I have distributed all of the hosts. Today I got stuck in an unxpected traffic jam and turned on the radio to see if I could hear of any news and/or how far it backed up so that I could decide whether or not to take an alternative route or continue where I was.

As I was flipping through the stations, I heard a song that I liked and began listening to it – briefly forgetting that I had the Eucharist with me. Was that wrong?

Since I didn’t do it intentionally, I don’t think that it was a sin but now this raises another question: is it wrong to listen to radio while transporting the Eucharist?

To me, it doesn’t seem right but no one ever told me that it was wrong either. Which is why I am asking the question to get other insight into this.

I think your concious is guiding you. Technically, I don’t see anything wrong with listening to the radio while you’re transporting the Eucharist. But being mindful of what you experienced at Mass, and reflection, etc. is a grace that you have to keep you in that state when you distribute the Eucharist to the homebound.

If you don’t want to do it, don’t do it. But don’t worry about it if you did.

And also consider the big JC is riding with you. Wow, that is so cool! I would talk to Him.

Well, as long as you weren’t listening to something that would offend Christ (which you shouldn’t listen to anyway), I think you’re fine. I’m sure Jesus likes music. But I bet He’d like conversation better, so you could talk to Him next time, like your own personal Holy Hour.

Please don’t fall into scruples over this. You are doing a great service by bringing Jesus to the sick. I’m sure the Apostles who traveled with Christ constantly did far worse than listen to music, and He loved them still. Obviously you should be mindful that He’s with you, but don’t go looking for sin where there isn’t any. That’s what satan would like you to do.

It’s OK for friends to listen to good music together while riding in the car. That’s what you were doing.

Care to explain why? Other folks have explained why they thought it was okay and I understand those reasons. I would like to understand the reasons for the opposing point of view so that I can compare and contrast.

Because, brother, you have the Second Person of the Holy Trinity IN YOUR CAR WITH YOU! He’s not your buddy. He’s not the “Big JC” (may God forgive us). He’s God. The Creator of the Universe. The same God who struck a man dead in the OT for daring to touch the Ark of the Covenant. The same God that told Moses to take his shoes off because he was standing on holy ground.

But that’s my opinion. Perhaps I’m wrong. Maybe in our brave new church, we shouldn’t have a holy, respectful fear of God. Maybe He is our buddy. Maybe we can take Him home and prop him up next to the recliner and watch football with Him. Maybe we can take him to the bowling alley or pool hall too. That’s what friends do, isn’t it?

All I’m saying is, if you have Him in your car, you should be consciously aware of Him at all times. That’s all.

But that’s just my opinion. I’m probably wrong. Again.

Well, I agree with you.

I think my comment above still stands – considering we ALWAYS have the Holy Spirit with us, we shouldn’t be doing anything we wouldn’t do in front of God no matter what. It’s not like He can only see us if we’re driving Him to be received by the sick.

It’s not about “God is my buddy.” It’s about living a holy life all the time, so that you don’t have to “act differently” in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament. If the music is music you could listen to on a daily basis and not be ashamed that the Holy Spirit is hearing it, then I think it’s fine to listen to it in the Real Presence of Jesus. YMMV …

I don’t think God is a crazy ogre who just explodes at everything of fashion we do like some drunk redneck jealous husband who gets mad when his dinner isn’t heated up properly.
I think God knows our hearts. And if our hearts want a little jazz playing on the way to bring Jesus to some elderly or infirmed patient… i can’t see God in a rage over that.

I don’t think God is as tyrannical and mean as we protray him to be. He must have a massive sense of humor… he made us.

I bet Jesus has a lot of fun at your parties 🙂

Did you ask your pastor? What did he say?
As I was reading your post, I was also on the phone with our parish deacon (he was giving me another person to whom I would be bringing communion to) and so I asked him.

He said that there was “nothing disrespectful in listen to the radio while transporting the Eucharist”. He added that most times he is in prayerful meditation but that is not required and there is nothing wrong if you’re not.

I would suggest getting a rosary or prayer CD or tape, or some hymns or at least Christian-based music to listen to in the car to keep your mind on what you’re doing. There are even many places online that will send you tapes or CDs for free.

Well, I agree with you.
Hooray! Support from across the pond. 🙂

Then it’s almost unanimous. Jesus does not belong in a car. Especially in England where they drive on the wrong side of the road anyway.

And, Nick…when I said football, I meant football. Not soccer. I wouldn’t watch soccer with my worst enemy, let alone Jesus.

Dr.,

Just think its great when you just say it like it is.

I agree 100%.

It’s the blessed sacrament, no matter where it is. And revrence to the eucharist is very important. Would you turn that radio on in a church? I wouldn’t it. It really depends what music it was. But I highly doubt any music on the radio would be pleasing to God. You should bring a CD with you if you want to listen to something. Songs like Panis Angelicus, Hail Queen of the Most Holy Rosary, and Kyrie Eleison.

the blessed sacrament has been transported since long before cars existed. But I think it would be much more proper for a priest to be transporting it, rather than a eucharistic minister.
