Is it okay to sell things on Sunday if the money goes to charity?

My church is planning on selling rosaries after Mass on Sunday to raise money to pay off the church’s morgage. Is this sinful?

Let’s see…making money to help those in need.

But it’s Sunday…can’t do that? Or can we?

Jesus healed on the Sabbath, but the law said he couldn’t.

Fair question as Jesus did chase the money-changers out of the Temple. Yet we have collections taken up during Mass. Hmmm.
Jesus chased the money changers out of the temple because they were cheating the people. When operating ethically, they provided a needed service. This is an example of a sin becoming a sacrilege because of where and why it is done. Plenty of people cheat at their business, and that’s bad enough, but when they do it in the temple, it is also sacrilege, and that’s why Jesus tossed them out. He told them they had made His Father’s house a “den of thieves.” To call legitimate merchants thieves would be hyperbole that is not characteristic of Jesus and His way of speaking.

A collection at Mass or a sale of religious articles to raise money for the church is certainly not cheating the people out of their money. On a practical level, if you don’t do it on Sunday, nobody will be there to participate.
