I don’t know what Michelangelo’s motivation was for sculpturing ‘David’ completely nude, but he was such a great artist that every muscle in his statues was like a real person, that he probably wanted to show his perfect artistry in every detail.
He could have sculpted David wearing a loin cloth…unless he wanted to impress people with his attention to detail in sculpting David’s dinger.

Or more likely he didn’t see the human body as scandalous being a liberal artist type and all.
The TV show is just being stupid showing male & female survivors starting out, naked.

Pure titillation for ratings! 😦
I finally had to watch clips from the show. I think the show does what a lot of art does and that is reflect back to the person watching or listing or whatever. I personally was uncomfortable for the participants. I would not want to just stand around naked with anyone, getting to know them even someone of the same sex. But if I was thrown in that situation, how would I handle it? Titillating? The viewer can’t see anything; “areas” are thoroughly blurred out.

David was the King of Israel and Judah. Of course he was alive.
I didn’t know it was that David, (and I doubt he was running around nude back then!) but he wasn’t alive when it was sculptured. God Bless, Memaw

It’s just another step closer to leaving out the blurrs. I do not understand the attraction to watching a program like that. we are getting farther and farther away from decency. God Bless, Memaw

Yes, paintings & sculptures are displayed in a museum for the appreciation of the artist’s talent. If the image is too offensive don’t view it. Although, “David” is right out for everyone to see in the square.
Actually the original David is on display in the Accedemia. The one in the square is a replica. David was commissioned. It was intended to go on top of the cathedral, but it ended up being too massive.

I saw it 24 years ago. It was an amazing experience.

And if this was various places in Europe, or PBS, it wouldn’t be blurred out.

Because people are interested in human resilience, and resourcefulness.
After they meet in the assigned locale, the partners must find and/or produce water, food, shelter, and clothing within the environment.
(…)
A team is allowed to “tap out” at any point during the 21-day challenge. If they do not tap out, they must arrive at the designated extraction point on the final day to be picked up by a helicopter or boat or other vehicle suitable to the environment. Viewers are updated throughout with statistics including how many days have passed, the time, and the temperature. Naked And Afraid computes and then updates the cast members’ PSR (Primitive Survival Rating), which is based on predictions and observations of survival fitness in skill, experience, and mental strengths. Before and after weight measurements are also revealed at the end of an episode

I glanced at the show in passing once…
So many words of the past have changed or lost their true meaning. We are seeing where black is white today.

Christ was hung on the cross naked. As were many, male and female.

The early Christians were also baptized nude. The Mikvah, or purification, was performed nude. Even jewelry, rings and ribbons; all that would cover any part of the body was to be removed.

There are various periods in the recent past when nude swimming was common, at least for boys, most males, in school and gyms. There are many cultures, even today, nude, and unashamed. BUT, they do realize there are times to be covered, or for genitals to be concealed.

Douay-Rheims Ecclesiastes Chapter 3

All human things are liable to perpetual changes. We are to rest on God’s providence, and cast away fruitless cares.

[1] All things have their season, and in their times all things pass under heaven. [2] A time to be born and a time to die. A time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted. [3] A time to kill, and a time to heal. A time to destroy, and a time to build. [4] A time to weep, and a time to laugh. A time to mourn, and a time to dance. [5] A time to scatter stones, and a time to gather. A time to embrace, and a time to be far from embraces.

[6] A time to get, and a time to lose. A time to keep, and a time to cast away. [7] A time to rend, and a time to sew. A time to keep silence, and a time to speak. [8] A time of love, and a time of hatred. A time of war, and a time of peace. [9] What hath man more of his labour? [10] I have seen the trouble, which God hath given the sons of men to be exercised in it.

[11] He hath made all things good in their time, and hath delivered the world to their consideration, so that man cannot find out the work which God hath made from the beginning to the end. [12] And I have known that there was no better thing than to rejoice, and to do well in this life. [13] For every man that eateth and drinketh, and seeth good of his labour, this is the gift of God. [14] I have learned that all the works which God hath made, continue for ever: we cannot add any thing, nor take away from those things which God hath made that he may be feared. [15] That which hath been made, the same continueth: the things that shall be, have already been: and God restoreth that which is past.

Is this your way of justifying that kind of programing?? God help us. You forgot to mention that God clothed Adam and Eve right after the fall. As for baptizing naked, I never heard that before. As for stripping Jesus of His clothes, that was done to shame him publicly. God Bless, Memaw

I’m glad all the churches put a loin cloth on Jesus on the crucifix…it would be a little too much of a distraction during Mass. 😊

Isn’t it kind of odd, that years ago schools had kids swimming nude in gym, but in today’s sex crazed society, kids wear bathing suits?

Wasn’t nekkid swimming sex-segregated? That would never be accepted today.

It’s a shame, really. We want everybody to be “comfortable in their skin.” But that should include nekkid, where acceptable. The human body is not a sexual shame engine.

I’m nearly 80 years old and I never heard of such a thing. To be comfortable in your skin does NOT mean being nude!! God Bless, Memaw

Was born October 1937. Was swimming nude in high school, scouts and family reunions (Maternal family had 26 acres with a creek and swimming hole, well in the middle of property:) )

I guess people can’t afford a Walmart bathing suit, since they have to swim naked. 🤷

I don’t feel comfortable with it… you have to wonder how you ‘measure up’! 😛

I never even heard of High Schools having swimming pools in those day. At least not Catholic High Schools. Any parent that would allow their children to swim nude in a public place needs to learn about modesty. God Bless, Memaw

Memaw, Called 3 Chicago Catholic high schools. Only one had a pool at the time, staff fail to know swim dress code. Do know some student talk about nude swims and forgetting about wet suits, especially when pool is in the AM. BTW, my public outdoor & mixed swim wear was White spandex, that lasted over TEN YEARS:rolleyes: , Perhaps due to lack of use, but even now have good clothes that are over Ten years old and some close to TWENTY. Even have some now seldom worn military uniforms ! ! !

Didn’t your family object to you swimming nude in school??? I know for sure mine would have. My Mom would have raised the roof at any such thing and so would I !!! God Bless, Memaw.

My family used to take baths at her mother’s house across a narrow field and dead end street. In warm weather, we might run, or walk, back home nude, 6 of us. Mom’s family was German. Grandma was born in Chicago. Granpa jumped German Navy ship at Ellis Island & came to Chicago with a Stradivarius! He was a conscripted master violinist. He later invented a metal cutting bench shear in the 1920’s, which is still being manufactured today, became a bank president and German ambassador.

In the 1940’s through 60’s, many schools, the Ys gyms and some indoor park district pools had nude swimming for the males. The girls would take gang showers, some did keep panties and bras on. And would change in their locker space.

One girl in a Chicago Lutheran high school had all her clothes get wet and wore a school jacket to class, with a only a pair of borrowed slacks. The male teacher demanded she remove the jacket without leaving the girl explain the reason, after a few minutes, the girl did remove the jacket exposing her breasts. The class was quiet, the girl replaced the jacket and went to the principal’s office. This story was heard on bus after school.

You might read “Naked Without Shame” by Christopher West, and get the CD which may still be free!

That doesn’t make it right! Hard to believe so many Catholics defend this kind of stuff, when we should ALL know the Church’s teachings on Modesty !!! No wonder our morals are going to pot! What are we teaching our young people?? God Bless, Memaw
