Is it okay to watch "Naked and Afraid"?

Watching a passion play would include of all of those elements. Just because an artwork contains representations of sin, does not make it sinful, in and of itself. Certainly it doesn’t make observing it so.
That is truly one of those “Shades of Gray” areas. The reality is; are we all just watching? Watching a sensual love story can raise feelings of desires. Does violent films provoke acts of violence within our society? I say yes.

Therefore, can we truly claim our innocence if we are watching sin? When we purchase a ticket to watch these acts, we are a patron - which means we are funding the further propagation of such acts.

The church teaches quite a bit on modesty and the way we should dress. For those defending this show about why does the nudity make any difference than they should let the people have clothes on and do the show. I don’t think they will do that since it will lose the prurient factor.

It’s not about the provocative aspects, but rather the heightened risk that being naked in a survival situation. The reason in fact why they immediately work to cover themselves, as another poster described.

As to the Church teachings I could find no explicit teachings, from any clergy, about exactly what was immodest. None. The only things that I could find, doing an admittedly cursory search, were things that mostly had to do with modesty and arousal, and that’s not necessarily related to clothing.

Again, is it immodest for me to be naked in a shower with others? We have no real sexual aspect here as far as I am aware. The nudity isn’t even shown, if they were looking to titillate they would be better off using skimpy clothing that didn’t require them to censor features, which would be more immodest.

Modesty is not about a specific dress code, and something that is at one time immodest, may not be at another. Which is exactly why the Church has absolutely not published specific guidelines about it, with the exception of attire to be worn in specific historical buildings.

Do we need to go to Africa and condemn the Church there for allowing women to wander about topless, which is considered extremely immodest in the Western World, but isn’t considered even slightly sexual there. Modesty has a lot more to do with the intended effect of attire than with the specific attire worn.

In response to the first. If something causes you personally to sin, don’t do it. There are certain things that I would refrain from watching because they would be occasions of sin for me, but not necessarily for others. There are people who could likely watch a sensual love story without it evoking any feelings of inappropriate desires. I can watch violent films without feeling any desire to act out unjust violence on others.

In fact for me, seeing things that are not necessarily moral is important in that area, we can see that the characters are flawed, and we can see how those flaws affect them. There are films that are not so good in that regard, but many are. For example I watched Breaking Bad, which is very nearly a Greek morality play, we see all of the characters behaving awfully, but it lands them in ruin. I would say that it’s better to show the ruinous results of sin, than it is to not show sin at all.

Yes, we must consider our patronage. But it is important to note that depicting a sin isn’t committing the sin, or even committing it in the mind, which would be as bad. A film that contains a murder is not an endorsement of murder. Now it is possible that there are gray areas, and Naked and Afraid may be one of them. I personally cannot find a prohibition from nudity by the Church, published by anybody but laity (who do not have the right to establish such a prohibition) and the competitors on that show are censored for public view. So I would say that there is no reason to suspect that the filming of the show is necessarily sinful. If I had reason to suspect it, I would not support the show.

You would think that civilized people in the 21 Century wouldn’t even take part in a program such as that to begin with. And others wouldn’t condone it. God Bless, Memaw
Amen, Memaw! 👍

I think it’s just stupid for the fact that our ancient ancestors tried to cover themselves as soon as they lost their fur. They knew it was better to be covered with something than have the brush and sun ravage their bodies. Just makes sense. Even the Africans who live in the bush are covered with something. You would think the first thing they would do is make some coverings out of plants or other things they could find.
God made the coverings of skin for Adam & Eve to cover their nakedness. He thought it was important.

Nudity at some point can cause impure thoughts…why are we wasting so much time trying to explain what is understandable by common sense 🤷

The body isn’t shameful as God designed it but it can be shameful the way man uses it. That’s why God covered Adam and Eve after they sinned. It’s hard to believe we can’t all see how far this kind of thing has taken us down that good ole slippery slope. Maybe were getting conditioned to not be shocked at what we see on TV anymore. God Bless, Memaw

Yes, and as I’ve already addressed this point I’m not sure why I should again. But here goes: It is not my place to presume on the motives of God without the guidance of the Church. The Church has not put out that particular guidance. Adam and Eve were clothed even though there was nobody there to be tempted by their nudity, and they were married. So clearly it is not a thing that is as simple as mere modesty. Possibly there was a survival aspect since before the fall death would not have happened and therefore exposure and the elements wasn’t a concern. Now I could speculate on this all day, but as I am not the Church, with the right to perform such an interpretation, anything I say on the matter would be baseless. As it is in your case.

To reiterate, Adam and Eve were clothed even though they were alone, and would be tempting nobody, so we cannot assume that modesty is the only concern.

And I’ve not argued that nudity could not cause impure thoughts, and I’ve stated that if the show is an occasion of sin for you, you should not watch it. I’ve only stated that nudity in a non-sexual context may not always cause impure thoughts, far less even I suspect than provocative behavior in a sexual context while completely dressed.

Adam and Eve covered themselves first.
Yes they did so that should tell us something. But God did it with skins, a little more substantial, I’d say. Unbelievable to the extent some will go to defend such a program. . Can you even imagine a Saint partaking in a program such as that? Not to many years ago it would have NEVER even been allowed on TV. Shows how far downhill our society has gone. God Bless, Memaw

A.) There was nobody else there to witness their nudity. They were married and were therefore allowed to have sexual feelings towards one another

B.) God did not state why he did this, we do know that they covered themselves because they were ashamed, not because it was driving them into a frenzy of lust. God also struck down Onan, should I go about murdering those who have masturbated?

C.) Again you are presuming sin, when the Church has made no declaration, and implying doctrine that has not been stated. That is extremely dangerous, to my thinking. Neither you nor I know what lays in others’ hearts, and neither of us is given any right or authority to do so.

D.) “Unbelievable to the extent some will go to defend such a program”, by using facts, and pointing out where there official Church teaching and where there is not. I think that many Saints would make the same argument. If it is leading you yourself to sin, you should avoid it. We are called to avoid the near-occasion of sin, but it in and of itself is not likely to be a sin, and I would not presume it so, lacking official guidance from the Church.

Hey guys, we’ve spent 109 posts arguing about the first 3 chapters of the Bible…how many thousands of posts will we have written as we reach the end of Revelation  😃

I’ve not been arguing about the first three chapters of the Bible so much as the fact that we aren’t qualified to interpret doctrine from it when the Church, herself, has not.

In all my Catholic school upbringing & years in the Church, no one has even brought up the question of why Adam & Eve covered their nakedness…so the Church didn’t either.

Time to quit! 👍

Humm…I am ambivalent here. I am not going to stop you from watching what you want. However, let’s call a; “spade a spade”. We know that if we are married and even think of having another women; we are committing adultery. It is stated in the Gospels. Now take the scenario that it’s Sunday, you just came from Church and you’re watching the game on television. Suddenly, a commercial appears with some attractive young lady telling you how enjoyable this frosty brew taste. Certainly, not every guy watching will be fantasying, some are gay and the remainder? Advertiser’s know that placing a sensual commercial will be very effective on your senses.

The reality is that you have not physically done anything, yet have you sinned? Maybe not but you certainly welcome the thought. Let me present a more extreme example; you’re a recovering alcoholic. How would your family feel if they discovered that you went to a bar after work? The reality is that you could have gone in the establishment and never touch a drink, but you certainly brought the devil to your doorstep. Hence, you willing introduced temptation.

Yes, life is full of temptations and we cannot hide under a rock. But, look at the mixed message it sends to younger people that we are constantly telling to wait for marriage. However, everything around them is telling them to proceed forward and worse; we support it by watching the programming or paying to see it in the theater.

Yes, because it states why, :They were ashamed, which has very little to nothing to do with modesty, and therefore isn’t particularly relevant to this conversation.

Well the thing is that different things will lead different people to temptation. I might not necessarily find the frosty brew woman a cause for temptation. The thing is for something to be sinful intent is required, you cannot sin unintentionally, this is as per the Catechism of the Church.

So as I said earlier, if you are watching Naked and Afraid because you find the nudity arousing, you should stop. But that doesn’t make it sinful for everybody to watch it. I am a straight male, moreover I have had issues with lust in the past, and I cannot see any context where I would find the idea of being naked in a survival scenario arousing. So to me it would not be an occasion of sin.

For me to have committed adultery in my mind, it’s not just spontaneous thoughts, it’s giving attention to and feeding and encouraging those thoughts. The intent is the clear matter here.

Yes, an alcoholic should not be approaching the near occasion of sin. But a bar is not inherently sinful. Just as a person who is driven to lust by this show should not watch the show, but that doesn’t make the show inherently sinful.

You’ll note that I have not EVER argued that it was that there was no actual physical contact that made the show not necessarily sinful, but rather that some things cause sin for some but not for others. And that we should not presume on the sins of others except for those matters on which the Church has explicitly clarified.

Naked and Afraid is not sexualized, the sex appeal is not the point of the nudity. The average person who watches it would not feel as though it were encouraging them not to wait for marriage, the intent is that they think, "Man it would suck to be in the desert, naked, that’s a horrible survival challenge. Now, yes, some people might find it sexually problematic, and they shouldn’t watch it, but that doesn’t mean all people would find it equally problematic.

The response about the Church and nudity deals with the fact that it was asserted that the nudity in the show made it sinful, I would argue that nudity of a non-sexual nature is not necessarily a problem. The intent again is of clear significance here.

Amen, and the Church DOES teach Modesty in spite of what some think. I was taught it and the Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches it, (read 2520-2527, if you don’t believe me. But some people like to walk around with their heads in their own little world. They make up their own beliefs to suit their lifestyle I think. And Your right, this discussion is just going around in circles and I wonder how some would feel it it was their sister, or daughter or Mother or wife, (or brother, Father, son or husband) playing the part in some of those shows or commercials. God Bless, Memaw

I’ve not argued that the Church doesn’t teach modesty, only that the Church is very specific about what modesty entails (dressing in a way that is not intended to arouse). And that the Church is equally nonspecific about what that entails.

Modesty is a complex problem. Wearing skimpy clothes is not always immodest, look at swimmers who wear barely anything, but are not immodest, or again any of the other scenarios I’ve presented where people are wearing next to nothing or in-fact nothing, but their actions do not result in general arousal.

As far as “make up our own beliefs”, that is literally exactly what you were doing. Nudity is not always immodest, I could be in a public shower, and when I was in the military, I’ve been to those, as well as when I was in High School athletics, those situations had absolutely no sexual context to them. And again wearing clothes doesn’t necessarily make you modest. Modesty is a virtue that isn’t entirely dependent on clothing. And the Church has published no doctrine with specific modesty guidelines for that very reason.

Not only do clothes != modesty, is is perfectly possible to be fully clothed and yet commit immodesty.

Consider the fashions of Victorian times: While they would seem to us to have had a phobia of human skin, there were certainly immodest fashions then.

You got to be kidding !!! From the mouth of the Blessed Mother herself, " MORE souls go to Hell because of sins of the FLESH than for any other reason!! FATIMA !!! And the Church has found Fatima to be “Worthy of Belief” and all Popes since have promoted it and our Dear Pope Francis is going there in 2017, possibly to Canonize the two small children. God Bless, Memaw
I’m glad to see Puritanism is alive and well 350+ years after it officially died.

Like I said before, it’s hard to believe that Catholics actually defend programs like this. To compare Catholic Modesty to puritanism is another big stretch. God Bless, Memaw

Not always such a big stretch, when modesty is defined by the area coverage of human skin.
