Is it possible to offer another's suffering for their own behalf?

I have never heard of this, but I have a very sick parent who is suffering a chronic and debilitating illness and I am not sure if he is aware to offer his suffering to God. I have attempted in prayer to do so, and was curious if it is acceptable to offer on his behalf?
 
Does no one have an answer? I know there are many here well versed in catholic teaching. IF the answer is no, which I assume it to be, a rationale based on teaching would also be appreciated or vice versa if the opposite happens to be true.

You can pray for him, you can offer up your own sufferings or penances for him, but I don’t know how you can offer up his sufferings on his behalf for him. Waiting to hear from others. Peace

Can you talk to your parent and explain to him/her that they should offer up their suffering to God for their benefit and the benefit of others?

I say no. One can only offer their own suffering up. Bishop Sheen, in particular, spoke of wasted suffering being a great tragedy. You may offer your own suffering for them.

Would this not be contrary to your parent’s free will?

I don’t believe so. It was a weird situation, but if approached it with him he likely would do it on his own. Unfortunately he has passed now and I pray for him daily. He suffered quite a bit with copd and while in hospice.
