Is it possible to sell one's soul to the devil?

Literally sell, I don’t think so, however, I just finished reading a book written by the Vatican’s Chief Exorcist where he talks about some of his cases. One case that your question reminds me of is where a lady basically “makes a deal” with the devil so that she becomes very powerful and is promoted in her job.

Strangely enough it seemed to work for a second, she was basically made the boss but it had demonic side effects. Not to ruin the book for those that want to pick it up, she ended up losing everything to try to get rid of the demons that now “haunted” her.

It seems that getting things from satan isn’t unheard of, but its always evil and never beneficial to the person. Can you get out of the “deal”, absolutely, but it always costs more than it did to get in, and it is, from what I read, extremely hard to do and some people never fully get rid of the demonic presence.

The unrepentant mortal sin comes close. But I know you mean deliberately and contracted. We recall that in Genesis 25 we learned of Esau’s giving up his birthright, and how God feels about it. The soul given to us is the vessel and birthright destined to carry us through our everlasting life, and he would not be too pleased about the deal. The body would go with it. Secondly the person would never see the ‘profit’, as in hell there is no profit but only the deepest sadest anger for getting ‘zero for the buck’. The soul belongs to God, therefore the sale of stolen goods for presumed profit.

But at this point the potential dealer should learn the proposal is part of the Culture of Death of this experimental world, and that he needs to make a U Turn and apologize to God and ask him for spiritual advancement. St. Michael would help him to put up a ‘Never for Sale’ sign on the door to temptation. (see St. Michael prayer).
 
My understanding is that there are forms of organized satanism that have a “selling of one’s soul” ritual or contract that is utilized. But this is mostly a form of mind control, wherein someone believes they can’t escape their particular group because of such previous arrangements.

But perhaps a more obvious form of this might be those few people who are “perfectly possessed.” These are folks who have willingly sought out possession for whatever sort of reason, and who have in fact been possessed, and who actually like the preternatural power that might result. It would take a lot for such a person to step away from satan.

According to Fr. Jose Antonio Fortea in the book ‘Interview with an Exorcist’ the answer is no.

He makes the following points -

*1. Making a pact with the devil does not mean that you will obtain a life of wealth, luxury or fame. I personally know of two people who made such a pact, and to put it frankly, their material lifestyle is worse than mine. Neither does it appear that the devil was especially generous to them in a carnal way. We need to remember that the devil is a deceiver; he is not God-he cannot give whatever he wants (see CCC 395)
  1. A person can always repent of the pact whenever he wants to with a simple act of the will. Upon repenting, the pact they made remains as ink on paper, no matter what the terms of the deal were. Even if the possibility of repentance was excluded in the pact, such a clause is useless. God has given us the freedom to do as we want; we cannot renounce this gift. This is also valid in eternity-in heaven we will no longer want to sin and in hell we will no longer want to be forgiven, but our freedom remains intact.
The great destructive power of a demonic pact is that the person may think he is condemned no matter what he does. It is difficult for him to see that he is still as free as before to repent and revoke the pact he has made, returning wholeheartedly to God.*

It is IMPOSSIBLE to sell your soul to the devil.

Everyone has until their dying breath to repent and be saved. This is an infallible teaching of the Church.

Doesn’t the rich and famous do that when money becomes their God? I don’t doubt for one moment that the A list successful movie stars didn’t sell out.

Let me repeat it. Souls CANNOT be sold to the devil. Anyone who thinks it might even be possible is contradicting Church doctrine.
Don’t get confused by thinking being in a state of mortal sin is selling your soul to the devil. IT IS NOT!
