If you throw away bread that is beginning to get mold on it, are you being wasteful of food and is that something that needs to be confessed?

No this is not sinful. The bread has already started the natural process of decomposing. Throw it away.

I certainly wouldn’t find it sinful personally. If it’s something that happens continually you might want to consider your purchasing and storage routines, but I can’t imagine a situation where discarding something that is inedible could become sinful.

We used to tear off the moldy parts and put the rest outdoors for the birds. Now it just grosses me out and I throw it away.

I have had the same problem as bread doesn’t move to quickly in my house. I just tear off the mold and give it to the birds or go to the park with my grandson and we fed it to the geese…who love it immensely…so I don’t feel it is a waste…🙂

No, it’s not sinful to throw away food that is decomposing. Certainly it could be dangerous to eat it.

Keep bread in the fridge in future to prevent mold growth.

Only in the sense that you bought more bread than you could use in the time allowed. Since you obviously didn’t do that on purpose, it’s not a sin.

Next time, just be more realistic about how much bread you can eat before it expires - and check the expiry date before you buy. 😉

I’m sorry, but what does this have to do with Liturgy and Sacraments? Are your concerned about it being a sin? Or are you concerned becuase the Blessed Sacrament in the monstrance at your parish is molding? For the former, throwing away moldy bread is not a sin, unless you were planning to open your own penicillin farm (in which case, you’ve shot your capital- but it’s still not a sin). For the latter, please speak to your priest.

Would these be Canada geese by any chance? Only way I would give them moldy bread is if they would get offended and leave town. Otherwise, the more you feed them, the more goose droppings you have to step around!

I live alone, so a big loaf is too much to keep even in the fridge. I will take out about 8 slices and put the rest in the freezer. Then I take out more as needed. The taste is not bad, and I never have a mold problem.

Absolutely not. Mould is harmful to the body.

Relax, your not wasting bread. The birds, opossums, skunks etc. will be glad to utililze it for you.

Don’t you wish they sold bread in single-serving two-slice packs? It’d be so much easier.

I keep the whole loaf in the freezer, and just pick off slices as I need them. As long as you’re not leaving it in there for months on end (and as long as it’s well-wrapped), the freezer compartment will keep it fresher than the refrigerator.

With 3000 posts to this place, you are asking this?? What gives?

Yep.

What about buying too much where by you can not consume it before it goes bad?
I leave out what I can use right away and put the rest in the freezer. Then I take it out as needed. It will not taste off as long as it is not frozen for many months.
