Is it time to boycott Notre Dame?

Now, this is a big deal for me. I’ve been a Notre Dame fan all my life and I’ve followed them through thick and thin.

But, this Obama speech at their commencement is the last straw. If President Obama gives a speech at the commencement ceremonies at Notre Dame, I see no reason why I should wear anything with the Notre Dame logo on it, even sending it back to the board with a note of why I’ll never buy anything Notre Dame again.

NBC should be aware that there will not be any Notre Dame football games ever shown at my house (or any sport).

I will continue to pray for the conversion of Notre Dame into a Catholic University again, but what else can we do to let them know that there are consequences for their actions?

Hit them in the pocketbook. Write and tell them you will no longer support them financially (in addition to mailing them your logoed paraphernalia:D).

I believe the ‘boycott’ should be mainly by ND alums. While all Catholics can express their displeasure at this sad state of the university, those who have close ties are the most representative. They have supported ND as students, grads, parents, faculty, and donors.

It is my hope and prayers that the present ND students and grads show a strong stand.

I hate to be the bearer of disillusionment, but you’ve been sticking with Notre Dame through thick and thin for far too long.

I graduated from high school in 1984 and one of my close high school friends went to Notre Dame. Her father went to Notre Dame. Two of her older siblings went to Notre Dame before her.

It was thoroughly debauched even back then. I can’t imagine it has gotten better in the intervening 25 years. Honestly, the Catholic identity was on life support even then. By the time she came home for Christmas break, she was on the Pill, hot and heavy with her boyfriend, drinking and partying, and so on. This was the norm, not the exception on campus and seems to still be if you read the article I linked to.

I’m sure there are some very good Catholics who choose to attend ND, but it doesn’t seem the university is particularly known for fostering a devout Catholic life.

Yes, I know (sadly). My daughter goes to Texas A&M, and I tell you, A&M is more Catholic than Notre Dame. They have a huge Church that is filled to the gills on Sunday. Daily Mass is well attended by the students, too. If I recall correctly, A&M has produced more priests than any other state-supported college (6 presently with one more in the pipe-line) in the country.

My love for Notre Dame was 1) because I’m Catholic and 2) because I’m half-Irish. I’ve known that ND hasn’t been as Catholic as it should, but this is ridiculous.

Yep. That is the truth.

TAMU is my alma mater.

I agree with Father Jonathan Morris when he says: “Notre Dame is a truly great university, and I say that sincerely. I am confident it will see better days.”

I think the appropriate response is to pray for Notre Dame. I won’t be sending donations any time soon (I’m an alum of the undergrad and law school), but at the same time, I will remain active in many other ways. Notre Dame is still the home of many outstanding Catholics - distinguished teachers such as Ralph McInerny, Charlie Rice, and John Finnis (who is regarded as one of the most prominent legal philosophers alive.) We should encourage it to grow in that direction.

Yes, we should always pray for the conversion of Notre Dame! And I share Fr. Morris’ conviction that ND will see better days. But I won’t be wearing or watching anything Notre Dame until then.

My first reaction was to do as you are doing. Then I thought about the number of times I have heard people say they were leaving the Church because they didn’t like so and so Priest. I always said that no Priest was going to drive me away from my Church and have decided that no Priest is going to drive me away from my allegiance to Notre Dame. I have read enough posts from ND students and Alumni to know that the spirit of Catholicism permeates the campus in spite of the knuckleheaded administrators they have. I was amazed at the number of Masses said on the campus daily and the number of places where 24 hour adoration was available. I

Of course given the performance of ND football team lately it would not be as hard to boycott them as it was in former times

Hmmm…

Two thoughts:
  1. I’ve heard quite the opposite regarding the spirit of the students, and not only on this site. Fr. Higby of St. Ireneaus Ministries, as well as Fr. Altier - two very fine teachers of Scripture and Catholic Doctrine - both bemoan the fact that Notre Dame is Catholic in name only. Those daily masses that you mention are mostly empty.
In contrast, I mention again Texas A&M, a State University, and find that the Catholics on that campus are much more energetic in their faith. I don’t hear that from Notre Dame. But I admit it could be the distance I am from the school. Any good news regarding the students is well received, I gotta admit!
  1. I think we should only boycott anything Notre Dame as long as we let them know what and why we are boycotting. Notre Dame has to understand that they are offending many of the faithful in their “open-minded” decisions.

My Daughter went ot A&M and I didn tget the same impression about Catholocism on the campus you do. However it is ireelvant to the discussion. i dont generally support boycotts anyway.

Now granted, Aggies do know how to party, but there is a flip side.

As noted earlier, and confirmed by 1ke, Texas A&M has produced more Catholic Priests than any other state supported school in the country. Ask your daughter what she thought of St. Mary’s.

I feel that it’s important to reiterate that the offending party is the university administration, and not the entire Notre Dame community.

Many groups within the Notre Dame community have condemned the decision and are taking action, including:
  • Notre Dame Right to Life
  • Notre Dame Knights of Columbus Council 1477
  • Jus Vitae
  • The Irish Rover (independent student newspaper)
  • Notre Dame College Republicans
  • The University of Notre Dame Anscombe Society
  • The Identity Project of Notre Dame
  • Notre Dame Militia Immaculata
  • Notre Dame Children of Mary
  • The Orestes Brownson Council
  • Notre Dame Law St. Thomas More Society

Another of my daughters went to Texas tech and she found the Catholic experience there outstanding. Lets just agree that The Univesity of Texas is Satans school and leave it a that! -🙂

Amen!!! “Saw-em-Off”!!!

Incidentally, a young man who I worked with on Teen Retreats went to T-Tech for a year, and he did say that it was a good school for the Catholic Faithful.

My daughter went to tech as a nominal Catholic at best. Her freshman year she got bumped off the marching band for an away game(back on the followeing week!) and decided to go to a catholic retreat. That weekend she found her Faith and became a devout fervent Catholic. By her Senior year she had dropped out of the band to spend more time helping with the Catholic Minstry on campus. I often joke that parents are afraid their children will go to college and find drugs, sex and rock-n-roll. My Daughter found God.

That’s the retreat that my friend, Jason, went to. He too, enjoyed it!
