I’ve always suspected that Sodom and Gomorrha did even more than the basic sin for which they are forever immortalized. Basically, they represented a secular society that had completely turned away from God in every way–in some ways similarly to the USA today, which scares me a bit, I must add. To have 2 cities where God couldn’t even locate 10 men worth saving speaks volumes. Moreover, there must have been a complete hardening of their hearts–as Jesus said that sins against the Spirit are the only unforgivable sins–and my understanding is that a lifetime of completely hardening one’s heart is what that alludes to. Same sex attraction is disordered–but not in itself sinful. ACTING on that attraction outside of marriage is the sin–just the same as living with someone you aren’t married to in a sexual relationship is a sin. The rub of course, is that regardless of secular law, the “marriage” between 2 members of the same sex is never valid. So the minute a person with SSA begins to romantically date, much less have sex with a partner they are physically attracted to–they sin.Look at the fact that we all die. But then also look at the fact that God gave us life in the first place. But not only that, God died on the cross for our sins when he didn’t have to and when he himself was innocent. If you would have been the only human being to ever be created, Jesus would still do all that he did and die on the cross for you. Jesus loves you that much. No mere mortal can do that for you. God is the one who gives you your next heartbeat and your next breath, and God is the one who is offering you eternal life in Heaven. The truth is God, and God is love itself. Because he is God and has infinitely greater intellect and understanding than we have we can’t expect to grasp the wisdom of everything he does. But what we don’t understand in this world has been revealed to the saints in Heaven who behold God’s face in the beatific vision. But Hell, by definition, means being away from God for eternity. What is there without God? Satan, demons, child molesters, rapists, murderers, thieves, etc. For me, the choice is easy.
However, before I’d think I should cast a stone at a gay brother or sister, I’d want to be sure that I was as pure as the driven snow myself: had never engaged in premarital sex or adultery–in thought or deed–nor had I ever masturbated, looked at a porno fiick, sexted or any of 100 other ways that a heterosexual can commit a sin of the flesh that is just as unpleasant to God as the sin of the homosexual.
As the mother of a lesbian daughter, I make no excuse for her sin–nor do I seek to trivialize it in any way. I simply agree with Pope Francis’ observation that homosexuality and abortion are NOT the only 2 sins out there. Are we more interested in condemning sinners to hell and standing as their judge or in bringing them home to Jesus? Because if what we want is the 2nd option we need to think a little before we shoot off our mouths cruelly. As a heterosexual, can you imagine waking up in a world one morning and being told that no matter how much you loved and were sexually attracted to your husband or wife, that you must NEVER physically consummate that feeling? Because, right or wrong–that is what our homosexual brothers and sisters face daily. I don’t personally believe that God “makes” people gay–I personally believe that there are several issues at work–and believe me when I say that I’ve read every book and every study that I can find out there since my daughter came out to me. Also, I’m a women’s health care provider–so I’ve read medical journal articles on the subject and spoken to many, many women with SSA. I don’t know all the answers, if I did, I’d begin by curing my own child. I’m beginning to suspect some of the answers though–AND I do know that if you want to be sure that a homosexual individual will write the entire Catholic church off completely and never get within 100 feet of one for the rest of their life–if you want to absolutely guarantee that such an individual loses all interest in ever learning about or having any interest in living a chaste Catholic life or becoming Catholic or if you want to make a true and permanent enemy for the church, one who will spend as many waking hours as God gives them belittling the church, its teachings, and every Catholic person out there–just start your conversation by calling them a pervert or disgusting or a dirty “fag” or tell them they are automatically condemned to hell (which you have absolutely NO way of knowing in the first place, BTW!) and you can selfishly make that happen right on the spot!
