I work for an advertising company and part of my job involves writing articles about companies in the Caribbean to advertise them and promote their business for tourists and locals. I’ve only been doing the job two weeks and I’ve been writing about many different types of companies such as tour services, cleaning services and flower sellers, but today my supervisor gave me the task of writing about an escort service. I felt uncomfortable writing an article to promote the business of an escort service because I’m a devout Catholic and I feel to do so is against my religious beliefs, but in the end I decided to write the article. I feel guilty about writing the article because I could have told my supervisor that I would rather not write it and explained that I’m a Catholic and asked him if he could give me a different company to write about. My supervisor seems like a nice person so I think he would have understood but I doubt that he would have been impressed. It is possible that this dilemma will also occur in the future, as I am likely to be given the task of writing about an escort service again. So my question is what should I do in future if this happens? Is it morally wrong for me to write an article as part of my job that advertises an escort service? Thanks for any advice you can give me.

As wrong as it is to write the article, you don’t want to put your job in jeopardy either. If it were me, I would ask my boss to be excused from that article but offer to do extra work instead, not just exchange it for the same about of work. I feel this would show I’m not just trying to get out of work or make trouble. And it would be worth it for your boss and coworkers to accommodate you.

I’d let your boss know that you aren’t comfortable writing something that likely promotes human sex trafficking. Both from a legal and a moral standpoint. Ask him/her someone else can be offered the assignment. Perhaps your boss might get a clue when you mention “from a legal standpoint” regarding human trafficking and take a look at what kind of clients the company is working with.

Why is it wrong to advertise for an escort service? Escorts are not supposed to act as prostitutes.

My friend is in Sales for a printing company. She was given a big order to print a pamphlet from a pro-abortion group. Accepting this order meant she would hit her sales goal for the month. She chose to decline the order. Within a week, randomly she received a huge order from a pro-life organization. I believe if you tell your boss that you cannot write for the escort service you too will receive a blessing. Peace.

An escort service is basically legalized prostitution. It’s what people refer to as a “call girl” service. What did you think they provided?

I don’t know much about these kinds of things…

Yes, it is wrong.

In the future, ask for a different assignment.
I also agree with the above, it is wrong. This you should confess and as above poster wrote, “ask for a different assignment”.

I feel a lot of people are being too soft on this issue. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but unfortunately you have committed a mortal sin. It seems as if you were well-informed of the intrinsic evil of the article in which you were writing about and in turn promoting. You have committed the sin of commission just as one would when voting for a pro-abortion or pro-“gay marriage” candidate.

Cardinal Burke stated in a story yesterday or today that for an employer to provide health insurance that includes contraception is guilty of material and formal cooperation in evil. I think the same may apply here.

I think the story will come up if you google Cardinal Burke.
