Hello everyone, I just have a very brief question… My husband and I have been married for 4 years now and we just went to this water park over the weekend and I noticed he was looking at other girls in bikinis… I know people look at other ppl… We are all human. But, he was doing the double, triple, Sometimes looking at a girl’s bodies until it was no longer in view. And it wasn’t just at their faces either. I mean he was looking at private areas. So, I finally came up with the courage to confront him about it because it has been bugging me. And he claims he has done nothing wrong and turned everything around on me, stating that I “am mean”. Yes, I am jealous to a certain extent. I don’t want my husband lusting (at least thats what it seemed he was doing) after other women. And, I might add he wanted to jump IMMEDIATELY into bed when we got home claiming"I am extra hot today, honey".
So… my question is this… Am I wrong for worrying? Is this okay in a marriage?

It’s one thing to notice a person looks good, another thing to continue to stare till they’re out of sight, the clue perhaps being his later comment.

Your husband might want to consider what Jesus says the bible
Matthew 5:27-28

“Adultery
27 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’[a]
28 But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.”

At the least, your husband needs to be more caring about his wife’s feelings. Respect and consideration.

I hope you two can sort this out quietly and fairly. God bless you both.

He should have kept better custody of his eyes but it doesn’t help when women are not dressed modest either. Has he always done this? If so maybe its best for him to stay away from these places for the time being.

I think most people appreciate an attractive member of the opposite sex. I know I do, and I’ve caught DH having a discreet look too. It’s normal. I am, however, reminded of a Seinfeld episode, where George was caught (by her father) staring at an attractive teen-ager’s cleavage:

“George, looking at cleavage is like looking at the sun. You don’t just stare. You take a quick look then turn your eyes away before you get burned.”

secondop,

I am a man, and I think your husband’s behavior is gravely wrong, both in itself, and also as a breach of fidelity and charity to you, his wife.

Some married men say that if they don’t “touch anything” they have not sinned; but Our Lord said we can commit a mortal sin merely by looking at someone lustfully. It is more serious the more it is deliberate, the more so the more it is prolonged. Unfortunately the culture around us tells us it is “just normal,” but the world’s standards are not from God.

I suggest you bring this situation to the attention of your priest, confessor, or spiritual director, and get some expert advice right away, both for your sake and for the sake of your husband’s eternal salvation.

I like the quote from Seinfeld.

OP, my husband and I have been happily married for 35 years.

He looks at beautiful women. I look at handsome men.

My screensaver on my computer is a very handsome picture of my favorite actor (who is 56, so at least it’s not indecent!). While my two daughters were growing up, I had one side of the refrigerator (the side I see when I am standing at the stove) covered with pictures of various actors, entertainers, authors, etc. that I liked. One of their girlfriends told them once, “Your mother is cool. She’s the only mother I’ve ever known who puts up pictures of her favorite actors!”

My husband’s office (at home) is decorated with all kinds of pictures, statues, toys, etc. of Ariel, the little mermaid, as well as other non-Ariel paraphernalia. When we went to see Jodi Benson (voice of Disney’s Little Mermaid), I had to hold my husband back from climbing over the gate and rushing the stage to get close to “the little mermaid.”

For us, it’s just harmless fun. And both of us know that our biggest crushes are reserved for EACH OTHER. Every time he looks at a beautiful girl, he will turn to me and say, “You’re hotter.” And every time I look at a handsome dude, I will turn to him and say, “You’re cuter!”

Here’s my advice to you: the bigger the fuss you make about it, the more he will do it. So don’t make a fuss. Roll your eyes, and that’s it.

People crave behaviors that are “forbidden.” Have you ever noticed that the instant you go on a diet, you start craving fattening foods that you haven’t wanted in years? But the instant you give yourself permission to eat these foods, you don’t want them anymore.

I think the same thing happens with men. It’s the way God made men–they are attracted by beautiful women and easily (instantly) aroused by sight. When we women acknowledge this, give a chuckle, roll our eyes, and say, “Wow, men! God sure made you different than me,” you will both be less tormented by a man’s “normal” behavior. And with the pressure off, your husband will find it easier to practice the “Seinfeld advice” to just look once, like most men do, and then look away and find his wife.

Here’s another piece of advice that I heard years ago from a very wise mother at a bridal shower–she told her daughter, “Honey, always bait your own hook.”

I think that’s important for all of us women to do. You may or may not have the knock-out body that many women have, but you can make the most of what you have and use it to attract your husband. When he looks at another women, he should immediately think, “Wow, my wife is beautiful and I want her!” That’s kind of what happens in our marriage–both of us are fully aware that we don’t really “want” these crushes–they’re just fun remnants of our teen years! We WANT each other, and seeing our crushes reminds us that we have found the love of our life!

I hope this advice is helpful to you and others.

I find your post to be uncharitable which is why I bolded the ‘US’ It obviously isn’t harmless for the OP if she tells her husband she is hurt and he turns around and calls her mean
Here’s my advice to you: the bigger the fuss you make about it, the more he will do it. So don’t make a fuss. Roll your eyes, and that’s it.
The more she rolls her eyes, the more he will do it. Rolling eyes is an immature way of expressing feelings. In a marriage, one person should always be able to communicate their hurts, boundaries and needs to a listening spouse

RIDICULOUS ! Where in the bible does it say 'Women, let your men look at beautiful women so he will be faithful to you ?
When he looks at another women, he should immediately think, “Wow, my wife is beautiful and I want her!”
That is the whole point. The OP did NOT immediately think his wife was hotter, he kept starring these women down. As long as the OP practices the basic hygiene and does not commit the sin of sloth, that is all that is required of her. Her husband is to love her for her heart
I hope this advice is helpful to you and others.
I actually can help this advice is what was given to women in the sixty. No wonder the feminist had to fight so hard

You are very intelligent to be worried. How cruel to get all excited by a stranger and then expect you to fulfil his selfish need. It is not OK in a marriage. If that was my husband, he would be sleeping on the couch now

A couple of questions:
  1. Would it be satisfactory to you if he “looked” but in such a way that wasn’t a sin?
  2. Do you feel confident in yourself?
Also, his response that you were being “mean”----what a cop-out!

I’m a married man myself, and what he is doing is not acceptable.

It might be “okay” for secular marriage (although sin is sin), but for a good, Catholic marriage such behavior of triple and double takes (ogling, basically) isn’t.

Furthermore, he needs to realize that a lot of women will know when a guy is staring at her, and some of them find it really creepy.

You need to be careful about near occasion of sin and role-playing. Pretending to be someone else during sex is not okay for a Catholic marriage and really any healthy marriage.

Don’t you think this advice is a little cruel? Your husband makes it clear that he loves and wants you above all else. Her husband does nothing of the sort. That makes ALL the difference.

Completely agree with this comment

Dear OP,
I’m so sorry this is hurting you…no, it’s not right, and yes, it’s immature.
I hope that when you have a frank discussion with your husband (after a bit of time has passed) that he will come to see your hurt, and regret that he was the cause of your pain.
He should only have eyes for you. Of course, at a water park, everyone is barely clothed, so it will be difficult, but he should also realize that you are not likely to be as amorous as he is when you get home after having ogled other women.
Only a heart to heart talk (and some prayers to St Joseph maybe) can change his heart if he’s a grown man, and still behaving this way. Ask him if he would approve of this behavior from a son of his, or from a boyfriend of a daughter of his?
He probably doesn’t realize how hurtful this is. No really. He probably doesn’t get it. Especially if he is young, Just talk to him and remind him how much you love him and that you hope that he can show you the same respect, in and out of the house, no matter the scenario. He likely doesn’t mean any harm, but he also doesn’t know how much it bugs you, I’ll bet.
God bless you, I wish you all the best.

This. Looking is one thing. Doing it in such a way that you are hurt is wrong.

  1. Men are embarrassing themselves when they stare at women, no matter what the state of dress. People notice.
  2. Women don’t like their men to stare at other women.
  3. Women/girls really don’t want to be stared at.
  4. Married men shouldn’t “people watch” at the pool. It’s creepy.
  5. If you actually are turned on by this staring, don’t be so obvious as to try to have sex with your wife later.
  6. It’s morally wrong on so many different planes to do this.
  7. Nope, can’t come up with any positive reasons for men to store at women’s bodies.

There was a good video from the Prager University about men’s meaningless looking at women. Unfortunately it was taken down for some reason. I have linked the transcript of the video, I would recommend reading it, it describes what men are dealing with vis-a-vis looking at other women:

prageruniversity.com/life-studies/he-wants-you.html#.U7tWS7Fcuqk

The way your describing it makes it seem a little untoward unfortunately, but try reading the transcript of the video

While it is not wrong for people to notice when someone is attractive, it is not ok for him to keep looking at them over and over, or to deliberately stare. It is wrong for him to use their beauty for his own pleasure. No, you are not being mean by demanding his total fidelity (I don’t know what words you used though), he has done something wrong. It is not ok in marriage, or even out of marriage, Our Lord is clear on this:

Matthew 5:27-28Revised Standard Version Catholic Edition (RSVCE)

Concerning Adultery

27 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ 28 But I say to you that every one who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.

I will pray for things to get better for you and your husband.

Don’t make a fuss? He is choosing to ogle other women. Yes, God did make men different. Men are easily attracted and aroused by sight, but this situation isn’t a reaction to beauty, this is him choosing to stare at them. Then he treats her like if she is in the wrong for being offended that the man who swore before God to be faithful to her alone is, by choice, not fulfilling his vow. This is not ok.

God also made men very combative, but that isn’t an excuse for just beating up people whenever the impulse comes. Our instincts and abilities are God-given, the actions we use them for are our choices.

I am sorry, but you are wrong, he needs to change.

God bless

I would have to agree that his behavior is not in line with Catholic teaching. As a man I am tempted daily, but custody of the eyes is very important.
